Falling For The True Heiress

Chapter 38: Isn’t This The Real Heiress?

"Miss Amelia?"

Mrs. Chloe’s voice came from outside the door.

Neither of us answered. Sylvia slowly closed her eyes and rested her forehead against mine for a few seconds. I felt her warm breath brushing softly against my face as a long, quiet sigh escaped her lips.

"...That timing is unbelievable," she muttered.

A soft laugh slipped out from my mouth before I could stop it.

The tension that had filled the room only moments ago melted into something warm and comforting.

Knock!

Knock!

"Miss?" Mrs. Chloe called again.

I smiled and pressed a gentle kiss on Sylvia’s forehead before slowly pulling my hand out from under her shirt. My fingers brushed lightly against her waist as I stepped away.

I walked to the door, took a deep breath to calm myself, then opened it.

Mrs. Chloe looked at me for a moment before her eyes settled on my lips.

She frowned. "Miss..." she said slowly. "What happened to your lips?"

I blinked before raising my fingers to touch them. They felt slightly swollen.

"Mmm..." I smiled innocently. "I think a cute mosquito bit me."

Mrs. Chloe frowned even more in confusion. "But, Miss... there aren’t any mosquitoes in the mansion."

I folded my arms and leaned lazily against the doorframe. "Really? I tilted my head. "Then maybe this one is very special."

Mrs. Chloe nodded seriously. "I’m sorry, Miss. I’ll tell the servants to check your room in the morning."

I bit the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing.

"So..." I asked, changing the subject, "why were you looking for me?"

Mrs. Chloe blinked, as though she had almost forgotten. "The Master’s secretary is here, Miss."

"He’s waiting downstairs."

I nodded. "Okay. Tell him I’ll be down in a few minutes."

"Yes, Miss." She gave a small bow before turning and walking away.

I watched until she disappeared down the staircase before quietly closing the door.

~~~~~ Third-Person POV ~~~~~
The moment Amelia closed the door, Sylvia let out the breath she had been holding.
A faint flush was still visible in her cheeks.
She slowly raised her fingertips to her lips, and they still felt warm. A shy smile slowly spread across her face as the memory of Amelia kissing her replayed over and over inside her head.
She couldn’t stop smiling. "So..."
She giggled softly to herself. "...Minnie is finally mine."
She hugged herself happily. She had imagined this moment countless times, but now that it had actually happened, it still felt like a dream.
Her smile slowly faded when a thought crossed her mind. "But..."
Her fingers tightened together. "...How are Mom and Dad going to react if they find out about us?"
The thought immediately filled her with worry.
Just then, the bedroom door opened. Amelia walked back inside and immediately noticed the troubled look on Sylvia’s face. The smile on her own face softened.
She walked over and gently placed a hand on Sylvia’s head. "Why the long face?" she asked softly.
Sylvia slowly looked up at her. She stayed quiet for a few seconds before speaking.
"...What will everyone think if they find out about us?"
~~~~~ Amelia’s POV ~~~~~

The moment Sylvia asked that question, I froze.

She’s right.

I didn’t even think about that. For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

I lowered my head for a moment before smiling. "How about... we keep it a secret?"

Sylvia blinked. "A secret?"

I nodded. "Mmm. Let’s keep it between us for now."

She stared at me quietly before finally nodding. "...Okay."

She stepped closer and rested her head against my chest. The familiar scent of her shampoo drifted into my nose.

I smiled and gently ran my fingers through her soft hair and gently stroked it. The silky strands slipped through my fingers.

"We don’t have to tell anyone yet," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "Let’s keep it our little secret, alright?"

A tiny smile appeared on her lips. "...Okay, babe."

I blinked and my heartbeat skipped a bit.

Did she just call me...

Babe?

Heat immediately rushed to my face as a smile slowly appeared across my face. I bit my lower lip, trying to stop myself from smiling like an idiot.

If someone had told me a few weeks ago that Amelia Winston would fall in love with a girl...

I would’ve laughed right in their face. Or probably had them thrown out of the house.

And yet here I was, standing in my room, holding Sylvia and even calling her mine.

Strangely enough, I wasn’t even afraid of someone finding out about us.

It looks like I was even the first person to fall in love with Sylvia.

I looked down at her and smiled. "Are you coming with me?"

She pulled back a little. "Where?"

"Downstairs. Dad’s secretary is here," I said, brushing the strand of hair away from her face. "He wants to see me."

She thought about it for a moment before nodding. "...Okay."

I smiled and reached for her hand. Our fingers intertwined as we walked out of the room side by side.

The hallway was quiet except for the soft sound of our footsteps.

By the time we reached the bottom of the staircase, I reluctantly let go of her hand.

The empty feeling in my palm made me want to grab her hand again.

A man wearing a navy-blue custom-made suit was already waiting in the living room.

The moment he saw me, he stood up immediately.

"Miss," he called and bowed respectfully.

I gave him a small nod before sitting on the single sofa. "Mr. Matt."

He stepped in front of me and handed a folder to me.

"I’m very sorry about everything that happened today, Miss," he said.

I looked down at the documents and took it from him.

"The Chairman and I were supposed to finalize the agreement with the Halcyon Group. " He continued. "However, an urgent matter came up at the company, so he asked me to handle the signing on his behalf."

I quietly opened the folder. The fresh scent of paper and ink drifted up as I flipped through the pages.

Dad had talked about this project several times before. It was one of the biggest partnerships Winston Group had been working toward.

But after everything that had happened today, trusting people wasn’t as easy anymore.

I flipped through the pages and then looked up at him. "So..."

"Did everything go smoothly?"

Mr. Matt smiled politely. "Yes, Miss."

"The agreement has already been signed."

He paused. "And Mr. Halcyon said he’ll personally attend Second Miss’s welcome-home banquet."

I slowly nodded and lowered my eyes back to the documents.

"Is there anything else?" I asked.

Mr. Matt nodded. "There’s one more thing, Miss."

I looked at him quietly.

"It’s about the deal the Chairman was on his way to before the accident." His face became a little more serious.

"The Ravenwood Corporation heard about what happened. And they decided to postpone the meeting until next week."

I slowly closed the folder and looked up at him. "So... how will it be resolved?"

Mr. Matt let out a quiet sigh.

"If the Chairman doesn’t attend the meeting himself..."

"...there’s a high chance the deal will fail."

He paused before continuing. "And if that happens, Winston Group’s stocks will drop."

The living room suddenly became quiet. I lowered my eyes and looked at the folder in my hands, which suddenly felt heavier in my hands.

Everything suddenly became clear.

So...

This wasn’t just an attack on Dad.

They were trying to cripple Winston Group.

And if that happened. Everything Dad had spent years building could come crashing down.

"What if I go instead?" I asked.

I felt Mr. Matt’s worried gaze on me. "But, Miss..." He hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "You’re not even a shareholder yet."

I slowly lifted my head and met his eyes.

"What if I become the vice chairman?" I asked quietly. "Can I attend the meeting then?"

For a few seconds, the room fell silent. The ticking of the grandfather clock echoed through the living room.

Mr. Matt stayed quiet for a few seconds before finally nodding. "...Yes."

"If you’re officially appointed as the vice chairman, you’ll have the authority to represent Winston Group."

A small smile tugged at the corner of my lips. "Good."

"That’s all I wanted to know."

Mr. Matt gave a respectful nod. "If there’s nothing else, Miss, I should head back to the hospital."

I gave him a small nod. "Drive safely."

"I will, Miss." He bowed before turning and walking toward the front door.

The sound of his footsteps slowly faded until the mansion became quiet again.

I remained seated for a moment, staring at the folder resting on my lap.

Now I finally understood why Dad had been so desperate to hand the company over to one of us.

Maybe he had already sensed something was coming.

I let out a slow breath before unlocking my phone. My fingers moved quickly across the screen as I quickly sent a message.

Amelia: I want to see you at the Winston Mansion tomorrow at 9:00 p.m.

I read the message before pressing send. The screen went dark as I locked my phone.

When I looked up, my eyes immediately found Sylvia.

She had curled herself into one corner of the sofa without me noticing. One of her knees was tucked against her chest while the other leg hung loosely over the edge of the cushion.

She had already fallen asleep. The warm golden light from the chandelier fell gently across her face, making her look even softer and almost too peaceful to wake.

A small smile tugged at the corner of my lips.

"Isn’t this the real heiress?" I murmured with a quiet laugh.

I stood and walked over to her. The closer I got, the more peaceful she looked. Her breathing was slow and steady.

A loose strand of hair had fallen across her forehead. I crouched beside the sofa and gently brushed it behind her ear.

Her eyelashes fluttered. "...Amelia?"

Her sleepy voice was barely above a whisper. "...Are you done?" she asked.

I smiled and nodded. "Mmm."

She rubbed one eye with the back of her hand before looking at me.

"You’ve already fallen asleep?" I asked.

She gave a lazy little nod and then slowly lifted both arms toward me. The familiar silent request made me laugh softly under my breath.

I slipped one hand under her knees and the other around her back before lifting her into my arms. She smiled and curled against my chest, resting her head against it. The warmth of her body melted into mine.

She rested her head on my shoulder, and I felt her fingers lightly clutch the fabric of my shirt before relaxing again.

I adjusted my hold on her before turning toward the staircase.

Then I quietly carried her upstairs.
