I climbed the staircase and made my way through the quiet hallway until I reached my bedroom. The mansion had finally become silent; only the faint sound of my footsteps against the polished marble floor was heard.
I balanced Sylvia carefully in my arms before pushing the door open with my shoulder and stepping inside.
She was already asleep. I watched her, and a small smile found its way onto my face.
I walked over to the bed and gently laid her down. The mattress dipped softly beneath her weight. She let out a sleepy little sigh, turned onto her side, and curled up around the pillow without opening her eyes.
I pulled the blanket over her and tucked it around her shoulders before brushing a loose strand of hair away from her face. I leaned down a bit and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
"Goodnight, babe," I whispered.
She didn’t answer. She only shifted a little in her sleep.
I quietly walked around the bed and climbed in beside her.
I lay down still, staring at Sylvia’s back. I still couldn’t believe everything that had happened today.
A faint blush spread on my cheeks as I turned onto my side and buried my face halfway into the pillow with a quiet groan.
"So... I really kissed her. " I whispered to myself. "And she’s really my girlfriend now."
Thinking about Sylvia beside me made me feel... safe.
Before I knew it, sleep quietly carried me away.
---
Warm morning sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting the room in soft golden light.
Ring!
Ring!
Ring!
My alarm shattered the silence. I frowned and rolled over before lazily reaching toward my phone. The moment my fingers touched it, yesterday’s memories came rushing back.
My eyes flew open.
I immediately turned toward the other side of the bed.
It was empty.
"...It was a dream?"
A disappointed sigh escaped my lips as I rubbed my chest. "I really dreamt all that..."
"What was a dream?" The familiar voice made me sit upright so quickly I nearly fell out of bed.
I turned toward the bathroom door. Sylvia was standing there with her arms crossed, one shoulder leaning against the doorframe with my towel tied around her body.
She had showered, her damp hair framed her face, and a faint smile played on her lips.
"N-Nothing," I replied a little too quickly, looking away.
She raised an eyebrow looking at me, making me want to take back my words."
Wait...
Why did I just say that?
I rubbed the back of my head awkwardly and swung my legs over the side of the bed, about to get out of bed.
"Did you forget what happened yesterday?"
Her question froze me halfway.
I slowly looked back at her and found she was still staring at me.
So...
It wasn’t a dream?
Everything really happened?
Neither of us spoke for a moment. After a few seconds, she gave a tiny smile.
"...I understand." She lowered her eyes. "You don’t have to force yourself."
She turned around and took a step toward the door.
"I didn’t forget," I said softly, making her stop.
She didn’t turn around. And for a few moments, the room became completely silent.
Then she asked quietly, "...Do you love me?"
I lowered my eyes and stared at the floor.
I did.
I loved her.
More than she knew.
More than I had realized myself.
I had just been too slow to understand my own heart.
I let out a small laugh. "...You know..."
"What if I told you I had already fallen in love with you?" I said quietly. "I just didn’t realize it until yesterday."
Sylvia slowly turned around. The surprise on her face made me smile.
"When?" she whispered.
I shook my head. "I honestly don’t know. I can’t even remember."
"All I know is..." I met her eyes and smiled.
"I love you, Sylvia."
For a second, she just stared at me. And then she ran toward me. I barely had time to open my arms before she crashed into me, wrapping both arms tightly around my waist.
The force of the hug made me laugh, and I hugged her back just as tightly. "So..." I teased softly.
"You’re really my girlfriend now?"
She looked up at me, her cheeks turning pink. "...I’m pretty sure I’m supposed to ask you that."
Her answering smile was brighter than the morning sunlight pouring through the windows.
"...Let’s get ready. Or we’ll be late," I said softly.
She nodded. "...Okay." and turned to leave.
I quickly reached out and held her wrist.
She looked back, and I leaned forward and stole a quick kiss.
She blinked before smiling so brightly that my heart skipped a beat. "...See you downstairs, Minnie."
"Wait..." I said immediately. "Are you seriously going back to your room wearing just that towel?"
She looked at herself and nodded. "Mmm."
I frowned and nodded. "Okay, then," I said, looking away.
She smiled, giggled, and walked out of the room.
I stood there for a few seconds before touching my lips.
"...She’s going to be the death of me."
I shook my head before turning toward the bathroom. The warm water washed away the last traces of sleep clinging to me.
A few minutes later, I stepped back into my room with a small towel draped over my shoulders, drying my damp hair as I walked.
I walked into my dressing room, stopped in front of my wardrobe, and opened it, revealing rows of perfectly pressed school uniforms hanging neatly inside as I reached for one without much thought.
I had more than five of them. Not because I needed them. But because one careless mistake had once cost a servant nearly a month’s salary.
And that morning...
I had an important class presentation.
~~~~~ Flashback ~~~~
"Mrs. Cecile!"
My voice echoed through the mansion as I stood at the top of the grand staircase.
"Why isn’t my uniform ready yet?"
A few seconds later, Mrs. Cecile hurried out of the servants’ quarters.
The older woman climbed the stairs with trembling legs, breathing heavily."
The moment our eyes met, I frowned.
What has this old fool done now?
She stopped in front of me before suddenly dropping to her knees. "I’m... I’m sorry, Miss..."
Tears streamed down her face. I stared at her for a moment before clicking my tongue in annoyance.
"Shut the fuck up and tell me what happened."
She lowered her head until her forehead almost touched the floor.
"I..."
"I burned your uniform while ironing it."
For a second, I just stared at her. A quiet laugh escaped my lips.
"You did..."
"...what?"
She flinched. "I burned your uniform, Miss."
I slowly raised my hand to slap her. She immediately closed her eyes.
But I stopped. She was an elderly woman and was old enough to be my mother.
I slowly lowered my hand again and closed my eyes, trying to calm myself.
"Mr. Clifford."
He appeared almost immediately. "Yes, Miss."
"Take Mrs. Cecile to my school. Buy five new uniforms."
"Use her salary," I said and turned around to leave.
"Miss!" She hurried after me on her knees.
"Please..."
"I’m sorry. I don’t have that kind of money."
"I used everything to pay my daughter’s college tuition."
I stopped walking and then slowly turned around. I tilted my head slightly and stared down at her.
"And how is that my concern?"
I looked at Mr. Clifford. "You have thirty minutes."
"I want five new uniforms before I leave for school."
Without taking another glance at her, I turned and walked back to my room.
~~~~~ End Flashback ~~~~
I shook my head, picked out a uniform, and walked toward my dressing table.
I hung it neatly on the standing hanger beside the mirror before sitting down. I plugged in the hair dryer and began drying my hair.
The quiet hum filled the room as warm air blew through my damp hair. I picked up a comb and slowly brushed my hair back.
"It looks like I need another hair treatment soon," I muttered, looking at my reflection.
It’s been a while since Camila and I went to the hair studio together.
A small smile appeared on my face. Maybe we should go after everything settles down.
When my hair was completely dry, I unplugged the hair dryer and placed it back on the table.
I applied a light, natural makeup before changing into my school uniform.
After buttoning up the last button, I walked back to the bed and picked up my phone.
Then I walked toward the door, took my sneakers from the shoe rack, and slipped them on.
After that, I grabbed my school bag from the bag rack beside the door and slung it over one shoulder.
I took one last glance around my room before reaching for the doorknob.
The bedroom door clicked softly behind me as I stepped into the hallway.
I let out a quiet sigh.
Another day...
Hopefully no one tries to ruin my morning.
