Falling For The True Heiress
Chapter 54: Did Auntie Seem... Different To You?I stepped out of the room and quietly closed the door behind me.
The hallway fell silent.
I answered the call.
"Good evening, Miss," Mr. Clifford’s calm voice came through the speaker.
"Mr. Clifford." My grip tightened around the phone. "Is everything alright?"
"Everything is fine, Miss."
"I called to let you know that the master has regained consciousness."
For a second, my mind went completely blank.
"... Really?"
The word escaped me louder than I intended. A wide smile spread across my face before I quickly covered my mouth.
"Yes, Miss."
"He’s awake now, and the doctors are very pleased with his condition."
The tightness in my chest melted away. A breath I hadn’t realized I had been holding slipped from my lips.
"That’s wonderful news. Thank you for telling me, Mr. Clifford."
"My pleasure, Miss."
There was a brief pause before he spoke again.
"By the way, Miss, I hope you saw the file I left with Mrs. Chloe."
"I did."
"I’ll go through it later."
"Very well, Miss. I won’t keep you any longer."
"Have a pleasant night," he said.
"You too, Mr. Clifford," I said, and he ended the call.
I lowered my phone and stared at the screen for a moment.
A smile slowly found its way onto my face.
"Dad..."
"You finally woke up."
Without thinking, I opened my contacts and tapped Sylvia’s name and pressed the call button.
Ring!
Ring!
Ring!
The phone rang three times before she answered.
"Minnie..." she murmured sleepily.
A smile spread across my face the instant I heard her voice.
Seriously, I really missed hearing her voice, even though it hadn’t been long since I left her.
"Babe. Were you sleeping?"
"Mmm."
I laughed quietly, surprised how she managed to fall asleep without me.
"How were you able to sleep without me?" I asked.
A lazy little hum came from the other end.
"Because I’m sleeping in your bed."
I smiled even wider as I imagined her curled up beneath my blanket.
"How’s Camila?" she asked.
"She’s better."
"Her fever’s still there, but she finally took her medicine."
"That’s good."
There was another brief silence before she spoke again.
"So..."
"What made you call?"
"I wanted to tell you something," I said, looking around.
"What is it?"
"About dad."
"...What happened to him?"
"Uhm... Dad has fully regained consciousness."
For a second, the other end of the line went completely silent.
Then—
"Seriously?!"
She shouted so loudly that I instinctively pulled the phone away from my ear with a laugh.
I heard the rustling of bedsheets as she hurriedly sat up.
"Yeah."
"That’s really great," she said happily. "Who told you?"
"Mr. Clifford just called me."
"Oh my God, finally..." she said, yawning. "I’m going back to sleep now, then. Just take care, alright?"
"Okay," I said.
"Wait. Have you eaten?" I asked because I knew she hadn’t eaten before I left.
"I’m not really hungry," she replied after a few moments.
"Sylvia."
Then she sighed dramatically.
"Fine. I’ll get up and go downstairs to find something to eat," she finally said.
"That’s better."
She laughed softly. "You’re so bossy."
"And you love me anyway."
"I really do."
I smiled. "I love you."
"I love you more. Bye, baby," she said with a chuckle.
"Bye," I replied and ended the call.
I stayed there for a moment, smiling at the dark screen before dialing another number.
Mrs. Chloe answered almost immediately.
"Miss," she called immediately.
"Mrs. Chloe, could you please make something for Sylvia to eat?"
"And make sure she actually finishes it."
She chuckled. "I already had a feeling you would call."
"Don’t worry, Miss. I’ll take care of her."
"Thank you, Mrs. Chloe," I said and ended the call.
I slipped my phone back into my pocket just as the bedroom door opened behind me.
Daniela stepped out. She stared at my face for a moment.
"Is everything okay?" she asked as she stepped closer.
I smiled and nodded.
"Yes, Ela. My dad has fully recovered."
"Seriously?" Daniela asked with her eyes widened.
I nodded. "He finally regained consciousness."
A bright smile spread across her face. "That’s incredible. I’m really happy for you."
"Thank you."
She tilted her head. "Are you going to see him tomorrow?"
"I am."
"If Camila’s feeling better, I’ll stop by the hospital before heading out."
"You don’t have to worry about me," Camila’s familiar voice came from the doorway, interrupting us.
Daniela and I turned immediately.
She was leaning against the doorframe with her arms folded, a faint smile playing on her lips. Neither of us had noticed when she opened the door.
"I’ll be perfectly fine by tomorrow."
I smiled. "I hope so."
I looked at Daniela and reached for her hand.
"Come on. Let’s go inside so Cam can rest."
I didn’t wait for her response and gently tugged her toward the room. Daniela followed without protest.
As we reached the doorway, Camila’s eyes dropped to our joined hands.
Then she slowly looked up at Daniela. A grin spread across her face.
Daniela’s ears were visibly red. So did her cheeks.
I frowned. "Are you alright?"
I pressed the back of my hand against her forehead.
She quickly looked away. "I’m fine."
Camila couldn’t hold it in anymore. A quiet laugh escaped her lips as she shook her head.
"Little rascal."
She turned and disappeared back into the room, still smiling.
Mrs. Everton picked up the telephone on the bedside table.
"Please come upstairs and clear the dishes."
After saying that, she ended the call. She stood and looked at me.
"Should I have a guest room prepared for you, Amelia?" she asked.
Before I could answer, Camila spoke.
"No."
She looked at her mother. "Don’t worry, Mom. Lia’s sleeping in my room."
Mrs. Everton’s brows furrowed. "Why?"
"So she can keep an eye on me during the night," Camila answered without missing a beat, though she avoided her mother’s gaze.
Mrs. Everton looked at me, then at Daniela, before finally turning back to Camila.
A quiet sigh escaped her lips.
"Fine."
"Suit yourself."
There was something unusual about her tone.
When we were children, whenever I stayed over at Camila’s house, we always shared the same bed. We would curl up together and fall asleep talking about anything and everything.
But as we grew older, that stopped.
For some reason, Mrs. Everton never liked us sleeping in the same room anymore.
I watched her walk toward the door.
Just before leaving, she stopped and glanced back at us.
"I’ll be in my room. If any of you need anything, just call me."
"Okay, Mom," Camila replied as she climbed back onto the bed.
Mrs. Everton gave us one last look before quietly leaving the room.
The door clicked shut behind her.
Daniela kept staring at the closed door for a moment before speaking.
"Did Auntie seem... different to you?" she asked quietly.
