"What... was he doing here?"

Melissa glanced at Sylvia before looking back at the man still standing there, a small smile lingering on his face as he watched Sylvia.

"Is there something you two aren’t telling me?" she asked, frowning.

"There’s nothing to tell."

Sylvia didn’t spare another glance in his direction. She walked around the car, opened the back door, and slipped inside.

Melissa hesitated for a moment before shaking her head and pulling away.

Sylvia’s phone vibrated in her hand.

She glanced down at the screen, and despite herself, a smile tugged at the corners of her lips the moment she saw the sender’s name.

Amelia: Baby, how are you doing?

She smiled a little wider and typed back.

Sylvia: Just missing my girlfriend.

A few seconds later, another message popped up.

Amelia: I’m missing your soft lips and—

Sylvia laughed quietly.

Sylvia: And what?

Instead of replying, Amelia called.

Sylvia answered on the first ring.

"Minnie," she greeted softly.

"Did you sleep well?" Amelia asked, her voice as calm and gentle as ever.

"Mmm... not really." Sylvia pouted without thinking, forgetting Amelia couldn’t actually see her.

"I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’ll be back soon, okay?"

"Okay." Sylvia smiled to herself. "I’ll be waiting."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

The call ended, but Sylvia continued staring at the dark screen for another second, the smile refusing to leave her face.

"So..."

A familiar male voice broke the silence.

"Who’s making you smile like that?"

Sylvia slowly looked up. Her eyes met the man sitting in the front passenger seat through the rearview mirror. The smile on her face disappeared instantly.

"And how is that any of your business, Drake?" she asked coldly.

Melissa glanced at Sylvia through the rearview mirror before looking at Drake.

Then she quietly returned her attention to the road.

She had known both of them for years. They had once been inseparable. But for the past year, something had changed.

Whenever Drake’s name came up, Sylvia’s mood immediately darkened. More than once, Sylvia had even asked Melissa to block every one of Drake’s numbers from her phone, yet she had never once explained why.

Melissa had stopped asking. But that didn’t mean she had stopped wondering.

"Because you look happy," Drake replied with a small smile.

"And I thought—"

"Hey."

Sylvia raised a hand, stopping him before he could finish.

"If you’re planning to talk about your girlfriend..." she said, her voice turning icy, "...then do everyone a favor and shut the fuck up."

The atmosphere inside the car instantly turned heavy.

Drake slowly turned around in his seat. A bitter smile crossed his face.

"We broke up."

Sylvia merely clicked her tongue. "Oh."

That was all she said before lowering her eyes to her phone again, completely indifferent.

Drake frowned. "That’s it?"

"Aren’t you... surprised?"

Sylvia lifted her gaze to him again. "And why would I be?"

A quiet, humorless laugh escaped her lips.

"Were you surprised..."

"...when you accused me because of her?"

The words landed like a slap.

Drake’s expression froze. The color slowly drained from his face. He looked away almost immediately, unable to meet her eyes.

The silence that followed was deafening.

No one spoke again. Even Melissa tightened her grip on the steering wheel, sensing the heavy atmosphere.

A few minutes later, the Highlander slowed beneath the grand entrance of Phipps Plaza.

Sylvia looked through the windshield at the luxurious shopping mall before turning to Melissa.

"Melissa."

Melissa looked at her. "Yes?"

"Let’s make this quick."

Melissa nodded. "No problem."

"Your dress has already been delivered. And your makeup artist is waiting in the dressing suite."

"Good."

Without another word, Sylvia pushed the door open and stepped out of the car.

The cool morning breeze brushed gently across her face as she adjusted the strap of her designer bag.

Behind her, Drake remained seated inside the car, his eyes silently following her retreating figure.

For the first time in a long while...

He realized just how far away she had become.

Sylvia walked into the dressing suite and found everything exactly as Melissa had said.

A sleek makeup station had already been prepared, with brushes, palettes, and cosmetics neatly arranged across the table. Soft lights framed the large mirror, casting a warm glow around the room.

The makeup artist, a well-known professional Melissa had personally booked, greeted Sylvia with a warm smile before guiding her to the chair.

"Good morning, Miss Sylvia."

"Morning," she replied with a small nod.

He draped a black cape neatly over her shoulders before gently tucking her hair away from her face.

"Let’s make you look even more stunning."

Sylvia let out a quiet laugh and relaxed into the chair.

The makeup artist picked up a spoolie brush and carefully brushed her naturally full brows into place before defining them with a fine brow pencil. Every stroke was light and precise, giving them a clean, elegant shape without looking too bold.

Next, he swept a soft neutral eyeshadow across her eyelids, blending the colors seamlessly. A thin line of black eyeliner followed, making her eyes appear sharper and more captivating.

He curled her lashes before applying several coats of lengthening mascara, making them look naturally fuller.

He lightly concealed the faint shadows beneath her eyes, then blended a lightweight foundation into her skin until her complexion looked smooth and flawless.

He added a touch of concealer to brighten the high points of her face, while a soft peach blush gave her cheeks a healthy glow.

He used a small brush and dusted a hint of champagne highlighter across her cheekbones and the bridge of her nose, giving her skin a subtle, radiant sheen whenever the light caught it.

Finally, he lined her lips with a nude pencil before finishing them with a soft pink gloss that complemented her youthful features perfectly.

The makeup artist took a step back, folded his arms, and smiled with satisfaction.

"Perfect."

"Natural, elegant... and effortlessly beautiful."

Sylvia looked at her reflection in the mirror.

The makeup hadn’t changed her appearance.

It had simply enhanced the beauty she already possessed.

A few minutes later, the dressing suite door opened once again.

Melissa walked in, with Drake following quietly behind her.

The moment his eyes landed on Sylvia, a smile tugged at his lips.

"Beautiful as always."

Sylvia didn’t respond. She didn’t even spare him a glance, her attention remaining on her reflection in the mirror.

Melissa scrolled through her contacts and dialed a number.

The line connected almost immediately.

"Please bring in the gown."

"Yes, ma’am."

Melissa ended the call and slipped her phone back into her handbag.

A few moments later, there was a soft knock.

The door opened, and the hairstylist walked in carrying a large styling case.

She greeted everyone with a warm smile before walking straight to Sylvia. Setting her case on the table, she smiled politely.

"Miss, shall we begin?"

Sylvia gave a small nod.

The hairstylist slipped her fingers gently through Sylvia’s silky hair before picking up her comb and styling tools and began to style it.

The hairstylist smiled softly before sectioning Sylvia’s long hair with practiced ease.

She curled the lower lengths into soft, flowing waves that cascaded gracefully down Sylvia’s back. Then she gathered the top section of her hair and pinned it neatly at the back of her head, allowing a few delicate strands to frame her face.

The style was simple yet elegant, giving her a youthful, romantic charm.

When the hairstylist stepped back, she smiled with satisfaction.

"Perfect. Miss, you look absolutely beautiful."

Sylvia lifted her eyes to the mirror.

The soft half-up, half-down curls framed her face beautifully, while the loose waves fell effortlessly over her shoulders and down her back.

She looked graceful, approachable... and every bit like the bestselling young author she was about to reveal to the world.

Melissa stepped back and folded her arms, a satisfied smile settling on her face as she admired Sylvia.

"Beautiful," Melissa murmured with a proud smile. "Madam would be so happy to see how much her little Sylvia has grown."

A small smile tugged at Sylvia’s lips.

Just then, another knock sounded at the door.

Knock!

Knock!

Knock!

"Come in," Melissa called.

The door opened, and a tall, slender woman dressed in an elegant black designer suit walked in. In her hands was a premium black garment box wrapped with a satin ribbon.

She walked straight to Melissa and offered it to her with both hands.

"Your order, ma’am."

"Thank you," Melissa said warmly as she accepted it.

The woman gave a polite nod before quietly leaving the dressing suite.

Melissa turned back to Sylvia. "Alright..."

"It’s time to get changed."

Melissa placed the garment box in Sylvia’s hands.

"Come on."

She smiled. "It’s time the world finally met Sylvia Ashford."

Sylvia looked down at the elegant box for a second before slowly lifting the lid.

The moment her eyes landed on the gown inside, they widened ever so slightly.

"It’s beautiful..."

A faint smile spread across Melissa’s face.

"I knew you’d like it."
