I looked into her eyes and found nothing but quiet certainty.
For the first time since leaving Camila...
It felt like I could finally breathe again.
A small smile tugged at my lips.
"I love you."
The corners of Sylvia’s mouth lifted.
"I love you too."
She leaned in and pressed a lingering kiss to my forehead before resting her cheek against my hair.
For a while, neither of us moved.
I simply listened to the slow, steady rhythm of her heartbeat, letting it drown out the noise in my head.
Right now...
There was nowhere else I wanted to be.
Except here.
In Sylvia’s arms.
After a few quiet minutes, I let out a soft breath and reluctantly straightened.
Sylvia’s arm loosened around my waist, though she didn’t let me go completely.
I turned to look at her.
"Mom called."
Her gaze met mine immediately.
"I think we should stop by the hospital."
I searched her face.
"But... if you’re tired, we can go later."
A gentle smile spread across her lips as she shook her head.
"If you’re going..."
She reached up and brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
"...then I’m going."
I couldn’t help smiling.
"How about I drive this time?"
She raised an eyebrow.
"You’ve been doing enough today."
I gave her hand a light squeeze.
"You just sit back, relax, and let me take care of you for once."
A quiet laugh escaped her.
"Mm."
She nodded.
"I can do that."
My smile grew a little wider.
Sometimes I wondered if Sylvia even knew how to say no to me.
She never argued.
Never hesitated.
If it was something I wanted, she simply accepted it with that same gentle smile that somehow made my heart feel impossibly full.
I shifted toward the edge of the bed.
Before I could stand, a pair of familiar arms slipped around my waist from behind.
I laughed softly.
"Really?"
Her face disappeared against my shoulder.
"Mmm."
"Being clingy?"
"Mmm."
The answer came without the slightest bit of shame.
If anything, her arms tightened another inch.
I shook my head, smiling to myself.
"You know..."
I rested my hands over hers.
"...I wasn’t going anywhere."
"I know."
Her voice was quiet against my shoulder.
"I just wanted one more minute."
My heart melted.
I leaned back into her embrace, closing my eyes again.
"Then one more minute."
I laughed quietly and let her hold me.
For a few more minutes, neither of us moved.
Eventually, Sylvia let out a dramatic sigh before reluctantly loosening her arms from around my waist.
"Fine," she murmured. "Let’s go."
I slipped off the bed and turned back to look at her.
"What if I gave you a reward tonight?"
Her eyes lit up immediately.
"A reward?" she asked, sitting up straighter. "What kind of reward?"
I tapped my chin as if I were thinking hard.
"Hmm..."
A second later, I snapped my fingers.
"Oh."
I smiled innocently.
"I forgot."
I turned toward the door.
"Babe."
I had barely taken a step when warm fingers wrapped around my wrist.
I glanced over my shoulder, already fighting a smile.
Sylvia was pouting.
"Babe," she called again, drawing out the word.
I couldn’t hold back my laughter anymore.
"Alright, alright."
I pretended to think for another moment before smiling.
"I’ll let you hug me to sleep tonight."
The words had barely left my mouth before Sylvia gave my wrist a quick tug.
"Hey—!"
I stumbled backward with a surprised yelp and landed on the mattress with a soft bounce.
"Oww..."
I burst into laughter more than pain.
"Sylvia!"
Before I could sit up, she was already above me, laughing just as hard.
"What?" she asked innocently.
Then she leaned down and peppered my cheeks with quick, noisy kisses.
One after another.
"Mwah."
"Mwah."
"Mwah."
I squirmed beneath her, laughing so hard my stomach hurt.
"Sylvia!"
"Why are you so cute?" she murmured between kisses.
Another kiss landed on my forehead.
"Who gave you permission to be this adorable, hmm?"
She kissed the tip of my nose.
My other cheek.
My jaw.
My chin.
Each kiss was followed by another until I couldn’t stop laughing.
"Sylvia!"
I turned my face away, trying to escape, but she only laughed and chased after me, stealing another kiss from my cheek.
Every time I tried to turn away, she simply followed me, laughing as though it had become a game.
I covered my face with both hands.
"Stop..."
"No."
She placed another kiss.
"I haven’t kissed you enough."
I peeked at her through my fingers.
"You’ve kissed my whole face already."
She tilted her head with exaggerated seriousness.
"I don’t think I have."
Then she leaned in again.
"My cheeks are going to smell like you."
She giggled, looking entirely too pleased with herself.
"Good."
She stole one last lingering kiss before resting her forehead against mine, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"So everyone will know you’re my girlfriend."
I groaned dramatically, though the smile refused to leave my face.
"You’ve completely lost it."
"I have."
She didn’t even try to deny it.
"And it’s your fault."
"My fault?"
"Mhm."
She brushed the tip of her nose against mine before pressing one last lingering kiss to my forehead.
"You keep looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you love me."
I smiled.
"I do love you."
Her expression softened, and she looked at me as though I had handed her the whole world.
"I know," she whispered.
Then, just as quickly, the mischievous smile returned.
"But I’m still collecting interest."
She leaned down and planted one more noisy kiss on my cheek.
"There."
"Now we can go."
Sylvia climbed off me, still smiling to herself.
I stayed where I was for another second, looking up at her. Just seeing the happiness on her face made me smile all over again.
Then I pushed myself upright.
"Okay."
I slid off the bed and stretched before making my way toward the door.
Just as my fingers curled around the doorknob, I glanced back over my shoulder.
"But be ready before I get back."
Sylvia gave me a playful salute.
"Yes, ma’am."
I laughed, shaking my head.
"I mean it."
"I’ll be ready."
Satisfied, I opened the door and stepped into the hallway, quietly pulling it shut behind me.
The mansion was unusually peaceful.
The soft glow of the wall sconces stretched across the polished wooden floor, and my footsteps echoed faintly as I made my way toward my bedroom.
A smile still lingered on my face.
I couldn’t seem to wipe it away.
Then, halfway down the hallway, I slowed.
"...My phone."
I blinked.
"I left it in Sylvia’s room."
I let out a quiet laugh at myself.
"Seriously?"
I shook my head and continued toward my room anyway.
"I’ll grab it after I get dressed."
I walked toward my room, the smile on my face refusing to fade.
Even after everything that had happened today, my heart felt... lighter.
The familiar scent of my room greeted me, and for a moment, I simply stood there, letting the silence settle around me.
Then I made my way to the wardrobe.
Sliding the doors open, I ran my fingers across the neatly arranged clothes before pulling out a beige knit top and a pair of dark blue skinny jeans.
"Perfect."
I changed quickly, smoothing the top over my waist before glancing at myself in the mirror.
Not bad.
Walking over to my dressing table, I pulled out a pack of facial wipes and gently cleaned away the last traces of oil from my skin.
After moisturizing, I applied a light layer of makeup—just enough to brighten my face.
Exactly the way I liked it.
Next, I plugged in my hair straightener and waited for it to heat up.
While I waited, I divided my hair into two neat sections, clipping one side back before carefully straightening the other.
The smooth plates glided through each strand until my hair fell sleek and silky over my shoulders.
When I finished, I picked up my comb and slowly ran it through my hair one last time.
I stared at my reflection for a few seconds.
Satisfied, I stood and walked over to the shoe rack.
After a brief glance, I pulled out my favorite pair of white sneakers and slipped them on.
Comfortable.
Perfect for today.
I glanced toward my collection of handbags lining one side of the room before shaking my head with a quiet laugh.
"I don’t think I’ll need any of you today."
My fingers brushed lightly over one of the bags before I walked back to the full-length mirror for one final look.
The beige knit top paired perfectly with the dark blue jeans, and the white sneakers completed the outfit with effortless simplicity.
I took a slow, steady breath.
A smile slowly found its way onto my face.
"I can’t wait to see you, Dad."
Without wasting another second, I turned toward the door, my heart already racing ahead to the moment I’d finally see him again.
