Falling For The True Heiress

Chapter 88: Babe, Are You Okay?

Sylvia smiled before leaning closer to me.

I closed my eyes, waiting for whatever was coming.

Anything.

Everything—as long as it was Sylvia.

I could feel her warmth close to me, and for a few seconds, I forgot everything else. The morning sunlight, the quiet room, even the plans we had for the day seemed to disappear.

But—

Ring!

Ring!

Ring!

My phone vibrated loudly on the bedside table, the sound cutting through the moment so suddenly that I almost groaned.

My eyes flew open immediately.

I stared at the ceiling for a second, hoping whoever was calling would give up.

The ringing continued.

"Fuck, wrong timing," I whispered with a deep frown.

Sylvia laughed softly beside me.

I turned to give her an annoyed look, but she only smiled, clearly enjoying my frustration.

I turned back and reached for my phone, grabbing it from the bedside table.

The screen lit up in my hand. I glanced down at the caller ID.

Who was calling me this early?

I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. "Let it be something important, or else—"

I suddenly stopped.

The name on the screen made my expression change. My irritation disappeared almost immediately.

I stared at it for a few seconds, my heart beginning to beat faster.

Sasha.

I frowned at the name flashing across my screen.

Why was Sasha calling me this early?

I answered immediately.

"Hey, Amelia." Her voice came through the moment I picked up.

"Sasha," I called, shifting against the headboard and pulling the blanket a little closer around me.

"Check the e-sport news," she said so quickly that I barely understood what she was saying.

I frowned.

"What happened?" I asked, blinking in confusion.

There was a short pause on the other end before she spoke again.

"It has been shifted to next month."

I froze.

"Wait... what?" I shouted, pulling away from the headboard. "Why?"

"I read that because the competition is being hosted between schools, they want the competition to happen earlier so the students can have enough time to prepare for their exams," Sasha explained, her voice rushed as she sighed between her words.

I stared at the wall in disbelief.

Earlier?

My stomach tightened.

"This is really serious... and also bad," I muttered, rubbing my temple as a dull headache began to settle behind my eyes.

"Yeah." Sasha let out another sigh. "So... we’re meeting at Camila’s apartment this morning for intense training with Felix. That’s actually the main reason I called."

I dragged a hand down my face.

Of course.

More training.

With the competition moved forward and exams hanging over us, there was barely going to be enough time to breathe.

"Okay. I’ll be there in a few minutes," I said, glancing toward Sylvia.

She was sitting beside me, her eyebrows furrowed in a deep frown. She had clearly been listening to my side of the conversation.

"Okay then. Bye."

"Bye."

I ended the call and lowered my phone onto my lap.

For a moment, I simply stared at the screen.

The room was still quiet around me, but my mind was already racing.

I rubbed my temple again and let out a long breath. "This is really going to be a long month," I muttered.

Sylvia immediately turned toward me.

"What happened?" she asked.

"The e-sport competition has been shifted to next month, and it’s going to be a long month," I answered with a pout. "I won’t be able to hug you to sleep again."

Sylvia’s expression softened immediately.

A small smile curved her lips as she shifted closer to me. The mattress dipped beneath her weight, and before I could say anything else, she leaned forward and pressed a warm kiss against my forehead.

"Don’t worry. I’m always here," she murmured, gently patting my head.

I leaned into her touch without thinking.

Her palm was warm against my hair, and the slow movement of her fingers instantly made me feel a little calmer. I rested my head against her hand, looking up at her with the same sulky expression.

Sylvia smiled as she continued patting my head, her fingers occasionally brushing through my hair.

I could stay like this forever.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t.

"I’m sorry, babe. I can’t join you to go to the hospital," I said quietly.

Sylvia’s hand slowed. She looked at me for a moment before giving me a reassuring smile. "Don’t apologize."

"But I wanted to go with you."

"I know." She brushed a loose strand of hair away from my face, tucking it gently behind my ear. "But you have something important to do."

I sighed and lowered my eyes. "I know, but I still feel bad."

Sylvia gently lifted my chin. "Babe. Look at me."

I met her eyes. "You don’t have to feel bad for choosing something you worked hard for." Her voice was soft, but there was enough certainty in it to make me believe her.

I swallowed. "But I’ll miss you."

"I’ll miss you too." She leaned closer until our foreheads touched. "But it’s only for a little while."

I nodded slowly.

Her breath was warm against my face, and for a moment, the stress about the competition seemed a little farther away.

"It’s fine. I’ll go alone," Sylvia said.

"Are you sure?" I asked, guilt tightening in my chest at the thought of her going to the hospital by herself.

She nodded immediately. "Mmm. Don’t worry about me. Just go and make me proud."

Her words softened something inside me.

I lifted my head from her warm palm and leaned forward, wrapping my arms around her waist. I held her tightly for a moment, breathing in the familiar scent of her perfume.

"You’re so sweet when you encourage me like that," I murmured.

I leaned closer and pressed a soft kiss against her neck.

Sylvia laughed quietly; the sound was warm and playful. "Okay, enough. Now go and get ready. Don’t make them wait for you."

I nodded before reluctantly pulling away.

Sylvia stood from the bed and smoothed down her clothes. "I’ll go back to my room and get ready for the hospital, okay?"

I nodded.

She turned toward the door and took a few steps.

"Wait."

She stopped immediately and turned back to me.

"How are you going to get to the hospital?" I asked. I glanced toward the window before looking back at her. "Why don’t you take one of my cars? Later, we can go and get you one if you don’t like any of mine."

Sylvia stared at me for a second, then a slow smile appeared on her face. She let out a soft breath, clearly amused.

"I don’t need a new car." She paused deliberately. "My wife already has a car, so I’ll just use hers."

My entire face heated up. I immediately looked away. My cheeks were burning, and I could practically feel the warmth spreading to my ears.

Why did she always have to say things like that so casually?

I wasn’t prepared for it at all.

Sylvia’s quiet laughter made it worse. She was enjoying my embarrassment.

"Stop laughing," I muttered, still refusing to look at her.

"I’m not laughing."

"You are."

She laughed again.

I finally glanced at her, only to find her wearing the most satisfied smile.

She shook her head before turning toward the door. Without giving me another chance to complain, she pulled the door open and stepped outside.

The door clicked shut behind her.

I stayed where I was for a few seconds, staring at it. A small smile slowly crept onto my lips.

I could still feel the warmth in my cheeks.

I shook my head and let out a quiet breath.

"You really love teasing me, don’t you?" I muttered to myself as my smile only grew wider.

~~~~~ Third-person POV ~~~~~
Sylvia walked out and closed the door behind her with a soft click.
She turned and looked at the door for a moment before looking away with a frown.
The smile she had worn inside the room had disappeared completely. She had only put it on to make Amelia happy.
But the truth was—
She was hurting.
She let out a slow, deep breath before turning and walking back toward her room.
"So my baby will be occupied?" she whispered to herself.
The thought made her chest tighten.
She had been hoping to spend more time with Amelia today. Now, Amelia would be busy with her training while Sylvia went to the hospital alone.
She sighed again and continued walking.
"Sylvia!"
She stopped immediately when she heard Amelia’s voice.
She turned around.
Amelia was standing in front of her bedroom door, Sylvia’s phone in her hand.
"You left this," Amelia said, waving the phone slightly.
Sylvia glanced at it before realizing she had forgotten it.
She quickly put her smile back on and walked toward Amelia.
"Thank you."
She reached out and took the phone from her.
But before she could turn away, Amelia’s eyes moved over her face.
"Babe, are you okay?" she asked.
Sylvia smiled a little wider and nodded. "I’m fine."
Amelia didn’t respond. She simply stared at her.
Sylvia could tell from her expression that she didn’t believe a word she had just said.
"I’m really fine," Sylvia added.
Amelia frowned slightly. She knew her too well.
Without saying another word, Amelia reached out, grabbed Sylvia’s hand, and pulled her back into the room.
"Babe—"
The door closed behind them with a loud click.
