Sylvia stared at the door where Amelia had just disappeared and smiled softly.
"I’ll really miss you, Minnie."
She stayed there for a moment, her eyes still on the closed door. Then she shook her head lightly and turned back toward the bathroom.
She finished her shower a few minutes later and stepped out with a towel wrapped around her body and a smaller towel in her hand. She gently dried her hair as she walked over to her dressing table.
Sitting in front of the mirror, she plugged in the hair dryer and switched it on. The quiet hum filled the room as she moved it through her hair, using her fingers to separate the damp strands.
Warm air brushed against her face. She moved the dryer slowly, making sure her hair was completely dry.
When she was done, she switched it off and set it aside. She picked up her brush and carefully brushed through her hair, smoothing it down before reaching for the straightener.
She plugged it in and waited for it to heat.
Once it was ready, Sylvia divided her hair into sections and began straightening it. She moved slowly, letting each section slide through the plates before moving to the next.
Little by little, her hair became smooth and straight, falling neatly around her shoulders.
Sylvia looked at herself in the mirror and ran her fingers through her straightened hair and smiled faintly.
Everything felt normal again, but somehow, the room seemed a little emptier without Amelia there.
Sylvia reached for the lotion on her dressing table and squeezed a small amount into her palm.
She rubbed her hands together before slowly applying it to her arms, spreading over her skin. She moved to her shoulders and legs, taking her time as she rubbed the lotion in until her skin felt soft and smooth.
The sweet scent of the lotion filled the space around her, mixing with the fresh scent of her shower.
When she was done, Sylvia placed the bottle back on the table.
Sylvia stood up and walked to her wardrobe. She opened it and looked through her clothes, running her fingers over them as she searched for something comfortable.
She didn’t want to wear anything fancy. She just wanted something simple and easy.
After a moment, she picked out a black oversized T-shirt and a pair of olive cargo pants.
She changed into them, pulling the T-shirt over her head before putting on the cargo pants. She adjusted the waistband and pulled the shirt down.
She picked up the towel she had left behind and walked back into the bathroom. She hung it neatly on the towel rack before stepping out again.
Sylvia walked back into her room and headed straight for her shoe collection. She crouched down in front of it, looking through the different pairs as she decided what would go best with her outfit.
Sylvia walked back to her wardrobe and picked up a small crossbody bag. She slung it over her shoulder and adjusted the strap until it sat comfortably against her side.
Then she walked over to her shoe rack and looked through the different pairs. After a moment, she pulled out her white sneakers.
She carried them back to her dressing table and sat down. She slipped them on one after the other before bending down to tie the laces.
When she was done, Sylvia stood up and looked at herself in the mirror. She checked her outfit one more time, then nodded with a small smile.
"Perfect."
Sylvia walked over to her bedside table and picked up her phone. She turned toward the door, opened it, and stepped out, pulling it closed behind her.
She walked through the quiet hallway toward the staircase. As she reached the stairs, she unlocked her phone and opened her chat with Amelia.
There was still no message.
Sylvia frowned at the screen.
"She didn’t even text me."
She sighed and slipped the phone into her hand as she started down the stairs.
"Miss."
Sylvia stopped and turned around.
Sir Martin was standing behind her, holding something out to her.
"First Miss said I should give this to you."
Sylvia looked at his hand. A set of keys rested in his palm.
"She told you?"
Sir Martin nodded.
The small frown on Sylvia’s face disappeared, replaced by a smile. Just knowing Amelia had remembered her was enough to make her forget that she had been waiting for a message.
"Thank you." She took the keys from him.
"You’re welcome, Miss. I will excuse myself."
Sylvia nodded as Sir Martin turned and walked away.
She looked down at the keys, turning them slowly between her fingers.
"So, you remembered this?" she whispered with a small smile.
She closed her fingers around the keys and continued toward the front door.
The moment she stepped outside, the morning sun fell across her face. The light was bright enough to make her squint, and she closed her eyes for a second before looking up again.
Her phone suddenly vibrated in her hand.
Sylvia glanced down at the screen.
Venny.
A smile appeared on her face as she answered the call.
"Little sis, where are you?" Venny’s voice came through immediately.
"I’m heading to the hospital to see my parents. I’ll call you as soon as I’m done," Sylvia said.
She pressed the key fob, and a soft beep came from the driveway.
Sylvia looked toward the car and started walking.
The car was a black Mercedes-Maybach with a sleek body, tinted windows, and a large silver grille at the front.
She pressed the key fob again, and the car unlocked with a quiet beep.
She connected her phone and put it in the holder.
She started the engine. Before driving off, she glanced at the mansion through the windshield.
Her eyes stayed on the building for a moment.
She wondered what Amelia was doing now.
A small smile touched her lips before she shook her head and focused on the road.
She slowly drove out of the driveway and headed toward the hospital.
Her phone rang again.
Venny.
Sylvia answered through the car’s speaker.
"You’re driving already?" Venny asked.
"Yes. I just left."
"Don’t drive too fast."
Sylvia laughed softly. "I won’t.
Venny ended the call, and Sylvia’s eyes returned to the road. She leaned back in her seat and sighed softly.
After a few minutes, Sylvia drove into the hospital and went straight to the parking lot.
She parked the car and turned off the engine. She picked up her bag, opened the door, and stepped out. After closing it, she pressed the key fob to lock the car.
She turned toward the hospital entrance and started walking.
"Hey, my daughter."
The familiar voice made her stop.
Sylvia turned and saw an old woman standing nearby with a smile on her face.
She recognized her immediately. It was the same woman she had visited the day before with Amelia.
"Good morning, Ma," Sylvia greeted as she walked toward her.
The woman smiled. "How are you doing, my daughter?"
"I’m fine, ma."
The woman looked behind Sylvia.
"Where’s Amelia?"
"Oh, she didn’t come today," Sylvia answered.
The woman nodded, but a small frown appeared on her face.
Before Sylvia could say anything else, a tall young man walked toward them.
"Grandma."
The old woman turned to him.
"I told you to wait for me in the reception lobby."
"I wanted to stretch my legs," she replied with a smile.
The young man stopped beside them and looked at Sylvia. He gave her a friendly wave.
Sylvia waved back.
"Grandma, who’s this?"
"This is Amelia’s sister," the woman said.
Sister.
The word hurt.
Sylvia forced a small smile and looked away. She knew that was what everyone called her and Amelia now, but hearing it still didn’t feel right.
Dominic smiled.
"You’re Amelia’s sister? Nice to meet you."
He held out his hand.
Sylvia looked at his hand and then at his face.
You jerk. That’s my girlfriend.
She almost rolled her eyes.
Sylvia had never liked touching people or having people touch her. She had changed a lot since becoming part of the Winston family, but that part of her had stayed the same.
She looked at Dominic’s hand again before looking away.
"Nice meeting you too," she said with a polite smile.
She didn’t take his hand.
Dominic slowly lowered his hand, looking a little surprised.
Sylvia adjusted the strap of her bag and looked toward the hospital entrance.
"I came to see my parents."
The old woman smiled. "Of course, my daughter. Go ahead."
Sylvia nodded. "Thank you, ma."
She gave the woman one last smile before turning toward the entrance.
Dominic stood there for a moment, watching her leave.
He looked down at his hand and then back at Sylvia.
Did I do something wrong?
He had only wanted to greet her.
Dominic frowned slightly, still confused by her reaction. He lowered his hand and turned to his grandmother.
"Grandma, is she always this quiet?"
His grandmother smiled.
"Maybe she’s just like that. Don’t take it personally."
Dominic nodded, but he still looked toward the entrance where Sylvia had disappeared.
"Okay."
