Seeing the rotters on both sides of the street still closing in on the three of them, Lin Yan didn’t waste any time and called to the driver:

"Don’t stop. Ram through them."

The driver immediately pushed the accelerator down harder. The engine rose into a roar as the Humvee surged forward, straight toward the horde ahead.

At the same time, several more rotters lunged at Coach from the side. Before he could bring his shotgun back up, he was already turning, driving an elbow hard across them and sending the rotters that had just reached him flying.

"Fuck, you assholes just don’t quit, huh?!"

Before he’d even finished, the roar of an engine surged out of the thick fog.

Coach turned instinctively. Before he could even make out what it was, one of the rotters at the edge of the horde went flying sideways, followed by a second, then a third. The next second, the massive front end of a Humvee burst out of the fog and plowed straight into the horde. Several rotters in its path were sent flying on impact, while one got dragged under the bumper. When the tires rolled over it, the whole vehicle lurched upward.

Coach stood there with his shotgun raised, frozen for half a beat as he watched the Humvee bulldoze a path straight through the horde. The rest of the curse died in his throat.

"...What the fuck?"

The young man on the roof had just grabbed the M2’s grips when Lin Yan immediately stopped him.

"Save the .50! These things aren’t worth it!"

Lin Yan was already pushing the door open.

"Out. Use rifles."

The two response unit members in the rear quickly climbed out and spread apart using the Humvee for cover. A second later, controlled bursts of rifle fire cracked out one after another.

The rotters that had been surrounding the wrecked cars went down in a wave. The few that remained had been scattered by the Humvee and never got the chance to close in again. Coach and the others seized the opening and started finishing off the rest. Within a few dozen seconds, the last rotter toppled over by the roadside.

The echoes of the final few shots gradually faded between the buildings, leaving only the low rumble of the Humvee’s engine.

Lin Yan rounded the front of the vehicle and walked straight toward the three of them.

The three of them had clearly recognized him too.

Coach froze for a moment, then visibly relaxed. Some of the tension went out of his shoulders. He lowered the shotgun, then finally couldn’t help laughing.

Rochelle let out a long breath as well, the tension finally easing from her face. Only Nick was still looking past Lin Yan, his gaze moving between the Humvee and the response unit members who had just gotten out, clearly still trying to figure out where Lin Yan had managed to find all these people.

Lin Yan walked up and looked the three of them over from head to toe again.

Aside from looking a little worse for wear, none of them even had an obvious injury.

Now he really couldn’t figure it out.

"Seriously, how the hell did you guys survive?"

Coach didn’t keep him in suspense.

"When Reeves told everyone to scatter, the three of us just happened to run the same way."

Rochelle picked up from there.

"There was a building right next to us with a basement window right off the street. The three of us climbed straight through it and didn’t come back out until everything outside had gone completely quiet."

She glanced around.

"And then we came out to this. We can’t reach anyone on the radio, all the roads have changed, so we’ve just been moving around and looking for other survivors."

Lin Yan listened and, for a moment, had no idea what to say.

The street they’d been on had been completely engulfed by the dragon breath, and somehow these three had managed to climb through a tiny basement window just before the fire reached them.

Maybe they just weren’t meant to die.

Lin Yan nodded toward the Humvee behind him.

"Get in. We can talk on the way."

Coach nodded, walked over, and pulled open the rear door.

Then he stopped.

The two response unit members who had gotten out to help were still standing outside, but everyone left inside was already packed in tight. What really stood out were the five people in full metal armor crammed into the back. The five of them sat shoulder to shoulder in heavy plate, practically filling the already cramped rear compartment.

Marcus was wedged between two of the tin cans.

When the door opened, he raised one hand.

"Hi."

Coach stood outside the door in silence for two seconds.

Nick and Rochelle leaned over for a look too, then went equally quiet.

Coach slowly turned his head.

"Lin."

"Yeah?"

"What did we miss?"

Lin Yan glanced into the vehicle.

"Don’t worry about the tin cans. They’re just cosplay maniacs who’ve taken it way too far."

Coach looked again at the five suits of metal armor that didn’t look anything like props.

"...You sure?"

Lin Yan gestured for him to hurry.

"Move it. Keep screwing around and it’ll be daylight."

In the end, the last few people still had to squeeze themselves in.

Eleven people plus all that equipment had already pushed the vehicle to its limit. Now there were three more, and normal sitting arrangements went completely out the window. Some people had to half-sit on someone else’s lap, others had to turn sideways and wedge themselves between a seat and the door, while arms and legs ended up tangled together every which way. After a fair amount of struggling, they finally managed to cram everyone inside.

Coach looked down at his legs, which barely had anywhere left to go, then looked up at the row of tin cans beside him.

"..."

The door finally squeezed shut. One of the younger knights stayed quiet for a moment, then quietly leaned toward the older knight beside him.

"I don’t know why," he said quietly, "but I get the feeling he wasn’t saying anything nice about us."
