The Church was farther away than Lin Yan had expected. He’d thought it would only take a few minutes to get there, but nearly twenty minutes had passed and there was still no sign of it.

Lin Yan was fine up in the passenger seat. The people in back, though, were having a miserable time.

It was still the middle of the night outside, the thick fog hadn’t lifted, and the temperature was only in the mid-fifties, so it was actually pretty cool. But the Humvee didn’t have air conditioning to begin with, and with twelve people and a pile of gear crammed into the back, there was nowhere for the heat to go. Before long, the whole compartment had turned stifling.

The others were doing all right. After everything they’d been through on the way here, they could handle a little discomfort like this.

Then a very quiet voice came from the back.

"So hot..."

Lin Yan heard it and glanced back.

Lucia was wedged in the middle of the crowd, her normally pale face flushed red from the heat, fine beads of sweat covering her forehead and cheeks. Lin Yan turned back around, lowered the armored window on the passenger side a little, and had the driver lower the window on his side too.

Cool night air immediately poured into the Humvee, carrying the fog with it.

"Boss," Marcus called from the back. "Is that safe?"

"Scared of what?" Lin Yan didn’t even turn around. "If something shows up, we’ll shut them again."

Then he looked back at Lucia again.

"Better?"

Lucia wiped the sweat from her face and let the cool air coming in from the front wash over her for a moment before giving a small nod.

"Much better."

Lin Yan turned back around and looked down at the compass in his hand. The Humvee kept moving for a while longer, until they rounded another corner and the old knight, who had barely spoken the entire way, suddenly spoke up.

"Wait."

"Stop," Lin Yan immediately said.

The driver hit the brakes, and the Humvee quickly came to a stop. The old knight squeezed his way forward through everyone packed into the back and peered through the windshield for a moment before speaking.

"I know this place. Turn right at the intersection ahead."

"Right at the next intersection," Lin Yan told the driver.

The driver stepped on the gas again, then turned the wheel when they reached the intersection, sending the Humvee around the corner.

Deep in the fog, the first thing to appear was a thin black outline. Lin Yan narrowed his eyes. As the vehicle drew closer, the outline stretched higher and higher until it finally emerged completely from the mist.

It was a spire.

Then a second spire appeared through the fog. Then a third.

As the Humvee kept moving closer, the Church gradually revealed itself from the mist.

The driver pulled the Humvee to a stop outside. Lin Yan opened the door and climbed out, while the people in back began squeezing their way out after him.

It was much, much bigger than Lin Yan had imagined.

The towering façade was built almost entirely of dark stone. Long, narrow pointed arches and stone columns ran upward from the base, with layer upon layer of windows, reliefs, and indistinct stone figures packed between them. Every line seemed to draw the eye upward, culminating in those impossibly tall spires, their highest reaches disappearing into the fog, their tips completely hidden from view.

Lin Yan stared at the Church for a while. It wasn’t until the initial shock wore off that he suddenly realized something was wrong.

Where was Fairmont Regional?

He frowned and looked around again, but there wasn’t a single trace of the hospital anywhere.

Had the Church swallowed the hospital somehow? Or had it been erased?

System.

[Yes?]

Where did the hospital go?

[Space has become unstable. Things belonging to another world can appear here. Likewise, things originally belonging here may be displaced to the other side.]

Lin Yan understood.

So Fairmont Regional might’ve ended up over on the Church’s side?

[That is possible.]

Lin Yan stood where he was, his eyes still fixed on the Church ahead. No one around him knew the System existed, so seeing him stare silently at the building, they naturally assumed he’d been stunned by the sight.

The old knight had clearly gotten the wrong idea.

They’d seen plenty of things from this world along the way. Now that they’d finally reached the Church, the old knight couldn’t help wondering how Lin Yan would react. When Lin Yan kept staring at it without saying a word, a hint of satisfaction crept onto his face.

"Well? Impressive, isn’t it?"

Lin Yan finally snapped out of it and looked over those absurdly tall spires again.

"Are you people stupid?"

The satisfaction on the old knight’s face instantly froze.

"Why the hell did you build it this big? Afraid the Dragon might fly past and not notice you? You’ve got towers this tall sticking up in the air. You could see them from miles away. It’s basically a giant target."

The old knight froze for a moment, then looked up at the Church he’d lived in for who knew how many years. The pride on his face slowly gave way to a distinctly glum expression.

Because Lin Yan actually had a point.

At some point, rain had begun to fall. At first it was only a few scattered drops, pattering against the roof of the Humvee and the ruins along the street, but before long it gradually began to come down a little harder.

Lin Yan saw that and decided not to give him any more shit. Instead, he looked up at the Church in front of them.

"All right. Let’s go take a look inside."

Then he turned to the others and gave his orders.

"The rest of you stay outside. If anything comes up, radio me. If there’s no time to check with me, make the call yourselves. Staying alive comes first. Don’t wait for my orders."

Marcus frowned when he heard that.

"Boss, how about I go in with you?"

"No." Lin Yan shook his head. "I’ve got my reasons for doing it this way."

No one knew what was waiting inside the Church. In a place like that, if something went wrong, there would only be so many ways out. If there really was some kind of trap or ambush waiting for them, bringing more people would only make things harder, and Lin Yan wasn’t confident he could keep everyone safe in that kind of environment.

He might be cold-blooded, but he wasn’t such a bastard that he’d knowingly drag a whole group of people into danger with him. Besides, taking Marcus and the others with him would only buy him a few extra guns. With the M2 already in his hands, firepower wasn’t exactly a problem. That gave him even less reason to make them take the risk with him.

Marcus was still a little uneasy, but when he saw that Lin Yan had already made up his mind, he didn’t argue any further. Coach and the other two were much more straightforward about it. They simply did as Lin Yan said and climbed back into the Humvee.

Lin Yan didn’t waste any more time. He took the lead toward the Church entrance, with the five Church knights and Lucia following behind him.

At the entrance, the old knight came up from behind and moved to the front. A massive black stone door stood before them, its carved reliefs worn almost smooth with age, leaving only intricate patterns climbing upward across the stone.

The old knight reached out and pushed open the Church door.

The heavy stone door slowly swung inward, and cold air spilled out from inside. The old knight stepped across the threshold first, with the other knights and Lucia close behind him.

Lin Yan stopped at the entrance and looked inside. The space beyond the door was shrouded in darkness, and deeper inside, almost nothing could be made out.

He adjusted the M2 on his shoulder and stepped inside.

Once the last person had entered the Church, the heavy stone door slowly closed behind them.
