Falsely Accused, I Started Plundering Monster Traits
Chapter 5: One at a TimeFuck. Why did there have to be three of them?
One unarmed goblin was something Lin Yan might have risked fighting. The creatures were shorter than him, lighter than him, and the strength he had gained from Brawn I should have been enough to overwhelm one at close range. Three armed goblins were another matter. Even if someone had wrapped him in steel from head to toe, he would still have run first and thought about fighting later.
The pounding footsteps behind him continued to grow louder as he crossed the station hall. A knot of passengers had abandoned their original routes and followed the only person they had seen kill one of the monsters. The student was the fastest among them, his younger body carrying him ahead of the group until he was only a few meters behind Lin Yan.
Unfortunately, the three goblins had followed them as well.
The spear carrier had initially fallen several steps behind while wrenching its weapon free from the woman. Once the spear was back in its hands, however, it quickly surged past the other two and took the lead.
Hunched low with the weapon tucked against its side, it charged through the station. A middle-aged man stumbled into its path, and the stone point punched through his ribs before he could raise his arms. The goblin ripped the spear free and kept running, leaving the man to fold over the wound and collapse.
The second goblin buried its chipped axe in the base of another passenger’s neck. It planted one foot against the falling body, tore the blade loose and immediately resumed the chase.
The last goblin was the least precise, though no less deadly. When a woman slipped in front of it, the iron club came down on the back of her head. Bone gave way beneath the blow, and the creature leaped over her body without bothering to check whether she was still alive.
None of them cared about the people they had already caught. The moving crowd ahead was louder, and every scream promised another target.
A translucent panel opened in Lin Yan’s vision while he ran.
[Task 3 issued.]
[Kill the three pursuing goblins.]
[Reward: 100 points per kill.]
[Task 4 issued.]
[Rescue survivors.]
[Reward: 100 points for each survivor saved through your intervention.]
The panels followed Lin Yan as he ran, remaining fixed at the edge of his vision no matter where he looked.
"Fuck! Can’t you see what’s happening right now? Close these damn things—they’re blocking my view!"
The panels silently disappeared.
Lin Yan glanced back at the empty corner of his vision.
"Wait. What are the points for?"
[Points may be used for purchases in the System Shop, lottery draws, and upgrades.]
"Got it."
Lin Yan slowed slightly and glanced back over his shoulder, studying the three goblins through the fleeing crowd while searching for something he could use against them.
Another scream rose behind him, sharp enough to cut through the noise. All three goblins turned toward it, even though the people they had been chasing were directly ahead. A metal sign was knocked loose near the ticket gates a few seconds later, and the creatures reacted to the crash almost as quickly.
They kept turning toward sound.
Near the far end of the hall, a staff door stood open, its electronic lock dead with the power. A red emergency alarm switch was mounted beside it. Farther inside, beyond a heavy fire door propped open with a black rubber wedge, a siren was fixed high on the corridor wall.
The emergency lamps were still working, which meant the station’s backup circuit had power. There was a chance the alarm was connected to it.
The student finally caught up and managed to run beside him, though his breathing had already become ragged.
"Where the hell are you going?"
Lin Yan changed direction toward the staff corridor.
"Keep running."
"I am running!"
They passed through the ticket gates together. Without slowing, Lin Yan swung the iron club into the alarm switch. The transparent cover shattered, and the heavy clubhead drove the recessed button inward.
The siren deeper inside the staff corridor erupted.
Its first blast struck hard enough to make Lin Yan’s ears ache. The tiled walls amplified the sound and carried it across the hall, but there was no mistaking where it came from: inside the corridor.
Lin Yan looked back.
All three goblins had stopped.
The spear carrier stared upward with its mouth hanging open, while the other two twisted around, searching for something they could neither see nor understand. For one brief moment, Lin Yan wondered whether he had misjudged them. They might ignore the noise once the surprise passed, or it might drive them in the opposite direction.
Then the spear carrier threw back its head and shrieked.
The axe wielder answered by hammering its weapon against a nearby pillar, adding a sharp metallic crash to the din. The last goblin jumped in place and waved its club overhead until it struck the axe wielder across the shoulder.
The blow should have started a fight. Instead, both creatures screamed even louder.
The spear carrier and the axe wielder charged toward the staff corridor.
The club carrier started after them, but it was a step slower. A mass of fleeing passengers cut across its path. A scream rose from somewhere inside the crowd, and the creature twisted toward the sound before disappearing among the moving bodies.
The two goblins accelerated so suddenly that several passengers were unable to clear the way. The spear carrier knocked one man aside with the shaft of its weapon, while the axe wielder swung at a woman as it passed and caught her across the shoulder.
Each person who fell curled up or covered their head, waiting for the goblins to turn back and finish them.
Neither creature slowed or looked back. They leaped over the people they had knocked down and continued toward the staff corridor, shrieking over one another as they fought to remain in front.
Lin Yan glanced past them, searching for the third goblin.
The club wielder was gone.
Near the wall, a mother had folded herself over her young son. She stayed there with both arms wrapped around his head long after the pounding footsteps passed, unable to understand why the expected blow never came.
When she finally looked up, the two goblins were already halfway across the station.
"W-We’re alive?"
