Only two sets of bare feet were still pounding after Lin Yan and the student.

The spear carrier was well ahead, while the axe wielder shoved through obstacles several strides behind it. Neither slowed to wait for the other.

Lin Yan ran into the staff corridor and slipped behind the heavy fire door.

The emergency lamp inside barely illuminated the opposite wall, leaving the narrow space beside the doorway hidden in shadow. Anything entering from the hall would have to expose most of its body before it could see him.

The student stumbled inside a moment later, bent double, and fought to catch his breath. "What are we doing?"

"Go farther in."

The student raised his head, but the slap of bare feet was already approaching the corridor. He glanced at Lin Yan’s iron club and backed away without another question.

Lin Yan pressed himself against the wall, both hands wrapped around the handle. The alarm covered his breathing, the rustle of his clothing and the faint scrape of his shoes as he adjusted his stance.

The stone point of a spear appeared through the doorway.

It passed close enough for Lin Yan to see the chips along its edge. The goblin followed at full speed, looking past the doorway toward the corridor beyond. Its shoulder crossed the threshold, then its head.

Lin Yan stepped out of the blind spot and swung.

Crack!

The iron club struck the goblin squarely in the temple and drove its head into the edge of the doorframe. Lin Yan had expected the bone to break. He had expected the creature to fall, perhaps stunned badly enough for him to hit it again.

Instead, the goblin’s head burst like an overripe watermelon.

Dark blood and pale fragments exploded across the wall. The body continued forward for another step under its own momentum, dropping the spear before collapsing across the corridor.

Lin Yan remained at the end of the swing, staring at the ruined head beside the door.

He had only meant to knock it down.

The first goblin on the train had required repeated blows from the window hammer. This one had died before it even understood it was under attack. He had known that Brawn I had doubled his strength, but a number floating on a panel had not prepared him for the sight of a skull bursting beneath one strike.

A warm spray struck the student across the face. He had not backed away far enough, and some of the blood splashed into his open mouth, sending him doubling over as he coughed and spat onto the floor.

A chipped axe spun through the doorway.

Lin Yan had only just started to turn. His momentum left him no time to duck or step aside.

The blade clipped the metal doorframe, knocking the spin off course.

His hand shot up on instinct.

Smack!

His fingers closed around the haft, stopping the blade beside his temple.

For once, Lady Luck had chosen his side.

Behind him, the student slowly straightened, his mouth hanging open as goblin blood dripped from his chin.

The goblin outside stared too.

Its eyes moved from Lin Yan’s face to the axe trapped in his hand, then dropped to its own empty fingers. The excitement vanished from its expression.

It turned and ran.

The fear still pounding through Lin Yan’s chest exploded into rage.

"You filthy fucking runt!"

He threw the axe aside, seized the spear beside the dead goblin and rushed to the doorway.

"I’ll cut off your whole fucking family’s heads and build a monument out of them!"

Lin Yan drew the spear back and hurled it with all his strength.

The fleeing goblin heard it too late.

The spear punched through its back and burst from its chest, lifting it off its feet before driving it face-first across the tiles. It clawed twice at the floor, leaving dark streaks beneath its fingers, then stopped moving.

Lin Yan grabbed his iron club and immediately withdrew into the shadow beside the doorway.

There was still one more.

He pressed himself against the wall and waited, listening for the slap of approaching feet beneath the screaming alarm.

Several seconds passed.

The siren suddenly cut out.

Silence dropped over the corridor, leaving a sharp ringing in Lin Yan’s ears.

He waited a little longer, but the third goblin never appeared.

Lin Yan cautiously leaned just far enough past the doorway to glance into the station hall, then immediately pulled his head back.

Nothing was charging toward them.

The third goblin had fallen behind somewhere among the passengers.

The student wiped his mouth with his sleeve, accomplishing little more than spreading the blood across his cheek.

"What the hell are you?"

Lin Yan picked up the fallen axe and pushed it into his hands.

"Can you use this?"

"I’ve never used an axe."

"Then try not to cut yourself."

Before the student could answer, a woman screamed somewhere beyond the ticket gates.

"Get off me—!"

Her voice broke into a choking cough. Something struck the metal shutter with a heavy bang, followed by the scrape of shoes against the floor.

"No—don’t—somebody help!"
