Falsely Accused, I Started Plundering Monster Traits
Chapter 7: Task 5: Clear the convergence."Hey! Why are you running so fast?"
The student was already charging out of the staff corridor with the axe clutched in both hands.
Lin Yan cursed and followed him.
When the goblins had been chasing them, the kid had barely dared to face them. Now that he heard a woman screaming, he was suddenly charging in first.
Most of the surviving passengers had either fled toward the platform or hidden behind pillars, ticket machines and shuttered storefronts, leaving the station hall open and nearly empty.
They followed the scrape of shoes and the repeated thud against metal to a closed convenience store.
The third goblin had forced a woman onto the floor and pinned her beneath its knees. One hand was locked around her throat while the other tore at the front of her blouse. She clawed at the thick fingers cutting off her breath and kicked hard enough for her heels to hammer against the metal shutter, but the creature only pressed more of its weight onto her.
The student swore and charged forward, raising the axe above his shoulder.
Lin Yan caught the back of his jacket and hauled him to a stop before he could swing.
"What are you doing?" the student snapped. "She needs help!"
"You’ll hit her."
"I can aim."
The shaking axe in his hands suggested otherwise. Its chipped blade was pointed at the goblin, but the woman’s head and shoulder were directly beneath it.
That was two hundred points on the floor—one for killing the goblin, and another for saving the woman. One bad swing from this kid could cost him both.
Lin Yan pushed the weapon down and moved past him.
The woman saw him approaching. Her bloodshot eyes widened, and one hand reached toward him while the other remained trapped against the goblin’s wrist.
"Help me," she rasped.
Something tightened beneath Lin Yan’s ribs.
The goblin followed her gaze.
Thud!
The iron club caved in the side of the goblin’s skull and killed it instantly. Lin Yan had held back just enough to keep its head from bursting apart like the spear carrier’s had, though blood still sprayed across the tiles and the creature’s body went limp at once.
It collapsed across the woman’s legs.
Her torn blouse hung open at the front, dark bruises were already forming around her throat, and tears still streaked her face.
The student set the axe down and hurried toward her. "You’re—"
The woman shoved the corpse off her legs, scrambled upright and kicked it squarely in the face.
"You ******* little *******! You ************..."
She kicked it again while clutching the torn front of her blouse with one hand.
The reassurance the student had prepared died in his throat. He silently took off his jacket and held it out to her instead.
She snatched it from him, wrapped it around herself and immediately resumed kicking the corpse.
The goblin was already dead, but that did not stop her. She stomped on its face, ribs and stomach, pouring every curse she knew onto it between blows.
Lin Yan looked away from the ongoing execution and checked whether the tasks had been completed.
[Task 3 completed.]
[Three goblins killed.]
[300 points awarded.]
[Task 4 completed.]
[14 survivors rescued from the goblin attack.]
[1,400 points awarded.]
[Current points: 1,800.]
The notifications from the three kills were still waiting at the edge of Lin Yan’s vision. Now that the fighting was over, he finally opened them.
[Trait obtained: Low-Light Vision I.]
[Trait obtained: Rough Skin I.]
[Trait obtained: Minor Regeneration I.]
Three new traits.
A second panel opened beside them, showing Brawn I inside the first of three outlined spaces.
[Trait Library unlocked.]
[Current trait slots: 3.]
[Equipped traits provide their listed effects.]
[Unequipped traits will be stored in the Trait Library.]
Lin Yan studied the panel.
Only three traits could be active at once. With Brawn I already occupying one slot, Lin Yan could equip only two of the three traits he had just obtained.
Brawn I was not going anywhere.
The first goblin on the train had taken repeated blows from a window hammer before one side of its face and skull finally collapsed. After equipping Brawn I, a single swing of the iron club had burst another goblin’s head apart, and the spear he threw had punched clean through the next one.
The difference was too large to ignore.
Low-Light Vision I was almost as obvious. Most of the station had lost power, and the passages beyond the staff corridor were darker still. Being able to see what was waiting there mattered more than almost anything else.
That left Rough Skin I and Minor Regeneration I.
Lin Yan looked down at himself. His clothes were covered in blood, but almost none of it belonged to him. The goblins had never managed to land a direct blow. His palm still burned from catching the axe haft, and his hands were sore from gripping the iron club, but there were no open wounds for regeneration to repair.
He selected Rough Skin I.
[Low-Light Vision I equipped.]
[Rough Skin I equipped.]
[Minor Regeneration I stored in the Trait Library.]
A cool pressure settled behind his eyes. The station did not suddenly become bright, but the darkness lost some of its weight. Colors drained into muted shades of gray, while outlines hidden in shadow became increasingly distinct. He could see beneath the shuttered counters, through the open staff corridor and several meters into passages that had previously appeared completely black.
The second change spread across his skin as a faint tightening sensation. An itch ran over his arms, shoulders and back, as though a layer of dry fabric had been pulled across his body. When he rubbed a thumb over his forearm, the surface felt slightly rougher, though it looked almost unchanged beneath the emergency lights.
[Current equipped traits:]
[Brawn I.]
[Low-Light Vision I.]
[Rough Skin I.]
[Stored in Trait Library:]
[Minor Regeneration I.]
Lin Yan dismissed the panels.
The student was holding the axe awkwardly in both hands again. He had been staring at Lin Yan, his expression caught somewhere between disbelief and admiration.
"Were you in special forces or something?" he asked. "Some kind of retired commando?"
"If that’s what you think."
Lin Yan rested the iron club on his shoulder, but before he could move, another panel appeared in front of him.
[Task 5 issued.]
[Clear the convergence.]
[Move the survivors to a secure location.]
[Eliminate all remaining goblins.]
[Exit the convergence.]
[Reward: 5,000 points.]
Five thousand.
That was more than everything he had earned so far combined.
Once the immediate threat was gone, passengers began emerging from behind pillars, ticket machines and shuttered storefronts. Near the ticket gates, the mother pulled her son to his feet while the two people struck during the goblins’ charge helped each other stand. Several more passengers cautiously returned from the darker corners of the station.
The scattered survivors gradually gathered near Gate Two.
Before Lin Yan could decide where to take them, static burst from the ceiling speakers.
"Anyone still alive, listen carefully. This is the station control room."
A man’s strained voice echoed across the hall.
"The staff door beside Gate Two is unlocked. Bring everyone inside and close the door behind you."
He paused, breathing heavily into the microphone.
"There are still creatures moving inside the train. I can see them on the carriage cameras. Hurry."
