THK—!

One of the knights was still standing there with his sword raised and shield up, except now there was an arrow sticking out of his visor.

The arrowhead had punched straight through the narrow vision slit, leaving only the long shaft jutting out in front of his face, still trembling slightly.

The next instant, his entire body toppled straight backward. His longsword slipped from his hand and clattered against the stone floor.

Only then did the nearby knights, still recovering from the deafening barrage, snap their heads around.

"Arthur!"

The nearest knight caught him before he hit the ground.

Arthur slammed heavily into his arms, his helmet lolling to one side as both arms hung limp. The knight instinctively shook him once, but Arthur’s body only swayed with the motion. There was no response at all.

The knight’s eyes reddened behind his visor, and his breathing turned ragged.

"Watch out!"

Someone shouted at him from nearby. But the piercing ringing still filled his ears, shutting out every sound around him.

It wasn’t until the torchlight in front of him suddenly flickered that he jerked his head up.

Nadir was already right in front of him.

The dozen-odd meters between them might as well not have existed. A gray-robed figure swept through the dim torchlight, moving so fast he was little more than a blur. The knight’s pupils contracted. There was no time to get back on his feet, much less reset his stance. He could only shove Arthur aside and swing his sword up on instinct.

CLANG—!

His blade had barely risen before one curved blade swept it aside.

The rushed swing never had a chance to carry its full force. The instant the knight’s chest opened up, the second curved blade slipped silently upward from below, skimming past his breastplate before sliding precisely into the narrow gap between his shoulder armor and helmet.

Nadir never stopped. The blade went in and came right back out as he glided past the knight’s side.

A second later, blood began pouring from deep beneath the gorget.

The longsword clattered to the ground.

The knight stumbled and fell, both hands flying to his throat. His armored gauntlets hammered against the metal collar with a frantic clatter.

Within seconds, those hands could no longer hold the wound shut.

His body tipped sideways and collapsed beside Arthur.

From the moment he caught Arthur to the moment both of them lay on the ground, only a few breaths had passed.

"Stay calm!"

"Protect the Saintess! Tighten formation!"

The remaining two knights immediately closed ranks.

The old knight stepped to the front while the other two shifted half a step to either side, keeping Lucia firmly behind them. The formation had barely tightened when Nadir was already on them.

CLANG—!

A curved blade came crashing down from the front. The old knight caught it with his sword. The impact jolted his blade downward and forced him half a step back. The second blade followed immediately, slicing upward toward his armpit. He snapped his elbow in and knocked it aside with his vambrace.

At almost the same moment, the knight on the left seized the opening at Nadir’s side and slashed diagonally toward him. Nadir slid half a step back, the sword edge grazing his gray robe and lifting only a corner of the fabric.

The knight on the right immediately moved in to follow up.

Nadir was still in the middle of his retreat. That was exactly the opening the knight was trying to exploit.

But just as he stepped forward, he caught Sahir by the doorway in his peripheral vision.

Sahir already had the bow at full draw, the arrowhead aimed straight at him.

The image of the arrow still trembling in Arthur’s visor flashed through his mind.

His movement faltered for half a beat.

Only half a beat.

Nadir checked his retreat and flowed forward again.

His gray robe fluttered lightly, and the half-step of distance he had just opened vanished in an instant. The slender curved blade slid forward tight along his side with no wasted motion, its tip slipping straight through the vision slit in the knight’s visor.

The blade went in and came back out in one motion. By the time Nadir had glided away from him, blood was only just beginning to trickle from the slit in his visor. His sword slipped from his hand, and his body crashed heavily onto the stone floor.

At that exact moment, Sahir gave a slight turn of his wrist.

The arrowhead shifted away from the fallen knight.

The bowstring twanged.

The old knight instinctively jerked his head aside. The arrow skimmed past his helmet and whistled past his shoulder.

CLANG—!

The arrow slammed into the ballistic plate on Lin Yan’s back. It failed to penetrate, burying itself only in the outer fabric, the long shaft left hanging diagonally behind him.

BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG—!!

Heavy rounds swept across the passage, tearing the flesh mound apart completely. Its layered body came apart like an overstuffed lasagna dropped from a height, chunks of flesh and severed limbs bursting loose across the stone floor.

Lin Yan swept another burst across the remains, then released the trigger.

The gunfire stopped abruptly.

Less than ten seconds had passed since the first shot.

Lin Yan turned around and felt something tug against his back.

He paused and reached behind himself, his fingers closing around a long, rigid shaft.

"Hm?"

Lin Yan yanked it free and brought it around in front of him, only then realizing it was an arrow.

The M2 had been roaring in his hands the whole time, its violent vibration running through his entire body. He really hadn’t noticed when the thing had gotten stuck back there.

He casually tossed the arrow aside and took in the scene.

Three knights were lying on the ground.

The old knight stood at the front, locked in combat with Nadir. The two long curved blades kept pressing in from different angles, leaving him with no choice but to keep defending.

The last knight had barely made a move to help when Sahir’s arrowhead shifted toward Lucia.

He was forced to stop and move back in front of Lucia, not daring to leave her exposed.

"Two against five, and they dropped three already? What the fuck are these two?"
