Lin Yan watched the fight ahead for a moment, then raised the M2, the muzzle following Nadir as he shifted back and forth.

But after several seconds of trying to line up a shot, he still couldn’t find a clean opening.

The two of them were locked together in close combat, blades clashing as they constantly crossed and switched positions. At this distance, a burst from the M2 would tear Nadir apart—but with the old knight fighting almost shoulder to shoulder with him, there was a good chance the rounds would punch through both of them.

"Tch."

Lin Yan lowered the gun, propped the M2 and the remaining ammo belt against the wall, then walked over to the last knight guarding Lucia.

"It’s clear back there."

The knight frowned and turned his head toward him.

"What? Louder!"

Lin Yan had no choice but to raise his voice and repeat himself.

"It’s clear back there! Take Lucia to the rear and give me your sword!"

This time, the knight finally heard him clearly enough.

He glanced back down the passage. The flesh mound that had filled the entire corridor moments ago had been reduced to something resembling a plate of spaghetti drowned in tomato sauce, with chunks of flesh and severed limbs scattered across the stone floor.

Then he looked toward the old knight still locked in combat with Nadir. He visibly hesitated for a moment before finally handing his longsword to Lin Yan. Raising his shield in front of Lucia, he escorted her toward the now-safe rear of the passage.

Lin Yan took the sword, gave it a casual twirl in his hand, and returned his attention to Nadir.

At the same time, Lin Yan made the switch with a thought.

[White Trait — Valerian Common] was unequipped from his trait slot.

Agility I took its place.

Lin Yan had only taken a few steps forward when Sahir, standing by the doorway, swung his bow around. The arrowhead that had been aimed at Lucia immediately shifted toward the approaching Lin Yan.

Sahir released the bowstring.

Twang—!

The instant the arrow left the string, Lin Yan drove off the ground. His previously measured pace suddenly exploded into a sprint, carrying him diagonally forward and out of the arrow’s line.

The arrow whistled past behind him as Lin Yan kept charging straight toward the two combatants.

In only a few strides, Lin Yan had closed the distance.

"Old man! I’m coming in!"

His shout exploded through the passage as Lin Yan reached them, his longsword already rising in his hands.

Fast.

But not so fast that there was no time to react.

Nadir had just forced the old knight back when his peripheral vision caught Lin Yan rushing toward him. His curved blade lifted slightly as he shifted half a step to the side. Lin Yan raised the longsword high over his shoulder and brought it straight down at him.

The longsword had barely begun to fall before Nadir’s curved blade was already coming up to intercept it.

It was the same method he had used to kill the first knight.

A swing did not reach full power the instant it began. From the shoulder driving the arm to the blade accelerating into the cut, the strike needed time to fully develop.

And that was the window Nadir was exploiting.

Once his opponent had committed to the swing, there was a brief moment before all that momentum reached the blade. If Nadir intercepted it there, he wouldn’t have to take the blow head-on. A well-timed touch was enough to knock the weapon off line and throw his opponent off balance in the same motion.

The curved blade was already closing in on Lin Yan’s sword.

But in the final instant before the two weapons collided, Lin Yan’s right arm erupted with a second burst of force.

The descending longsword suddenly blurred downward, completely destroying the timing Nadir had calculated.

CLANG—!!

The impact thundered through the passage.

Nadir never even got the chance to redirect the strike. A terrifying force crashed through his curved blade and into his arm, buckling his wrist and throwing his entire upper body off balance. The violent shock running through the blade made his fingers lose their grip.

The curved blade was ripped straight out of his hand.

The blade went spinning across the passage, slammed into the stone wall, then clattered onto the floor.

Nadir himself was driven backward by the impact, staggering several steps.

For the first time, his calm, effortless composure cracked.

His empty hand remained half-raised for a moment, as though his body had not yet caught up with what had just happened. The fingers that had held the curved blade were still trembling faintly, and his eyes flicked once toward the weapon lying against the wall before returning to Lin Yan.

The old knight immediately recognized the opening.

Nadir had lost one weapon and was still staggering from the impact. Before he could regain his footing, the old knight rushed in from the side. His longsword swept out from beside his shoulder in a horizontal slash, the edge heading straight for Nadir’s exposed neck.

The strike was fast and precise.

Then a hand suddenly swept in from the side.

Smack—!

Lin Yan backhanded the old knight across the breastplate.

Before the old knight even realized what had happened, the blow sent his entire body flying sideways. His iron boots scraped sharply across the stone floor before he stumbled into the wall and came to a stop.

For a second, the old knight simply stared at Lin Yan.

He had clearly expected resistance from Nadir. What he had not expected was for the man who had just created the opening to be the one who stopped him from taking it.

"You—"

He looked up, both shocked and furious.

Lin Yan turned and glared at him.

A string of words immediately came out of his mouth that the old knight couldn’t understand at all.

The old knight froze.

Lin Yan paused too, only then remembering that he had just switched out Valerian Common.

Forget it.

He turned back and gave up on explaining.

The old knight looked at him, then at Nadir, who had only just steadied himself a few steps away. Despite the obvious confusion written all over his face, he didn’t try to charge in again.

On the other side, Sahir drew another arrow from his quiver.

After the first arrow missed, Sahir stopped aiming for Lin Yan’s head. The arrowhead lowered, adjusting constantly with Lin Yan’s movement until it settled squarely on the obvious target between his thighs.
