Jenna:

"He wants someone pure, someone who’s never been with anyone. But he also wants someone who’s willing to show him what she can do for him instead of just thinking, ’Oh my Goddess, when I marry him, I’ll get so much from him.’"

Gigi rolled her eyes as she talked about women like that.

And I agreed with her.

Those kinds of women were horrible.

"Nobody should take advantage of anyone," Gigi remarked.

I nodded in agreement.

"But you didn’t answer my question, Jenna. I’ll ask you again. Are you ready to do anything for him?" she pressed.

I gulped before nodding.

"Yes. Anything."

I sounded even more confident after saying those words out loud.

"That’s what I wanted to hear," she replied with a small nod.

"But listen, you won’t approach him. I’ll fix everything between you two, and I won’t make you look desperate. We want him to make the effort, okay?"

I agreed with her wholeheartedly.

I wanted him to want me.

So I was ready to do whatever she told me.

"Let me come up with a little script," she said, snapping her fingers.

"A cute love story. Oh my Goddess, yes!" she squealed, jumping up and down a few times.

Not once did her heels wobble.

She had incredible balance.

"What do you mean?" I asked shyly.

"Alpha kings are special, so meeting their mate should be special too. A love story. A tale they can tell their friends and guests. But because you’re so shy, I’ll have to create that story for you. And don’t worry, it’ll be good," Gigi assured me with a wink.

I trusted her completely.

So when she started to leave, I had to tell her the one thing that had been weighing on me.

"Lady Lucille made me promise not to be seen with you," I admitted, shrinking my shoulders as I spoke.

What if she got upset and decided not to help me?

Gigi stopped dead in her tracks and turned around.

I was shocked to see tears filling her eyes.

But she smiled through them.

"I know," she replied in a broken voice.

"Jenna— I’m a victim of abuse."

She paused.

That statement alone completely blew my mind.

Then she said the next word.

"Rape."

I felt as though the ground should open up and swallow me whole.

The broken woman standing in front of me was still smiling.

"Lady Lucille doesn’t like me because I’m not pure, Jenna. But I won’t let that come between our friendship. Don’t worry. I’ll be very careful not to let Lady Lucille see us together."

She lowered her gaze.

"I wouldn’t want to hurt your reputation by having people see you with an impure woman like me."

Gigi’s voice was heartbreaking.

In that moment, everything changed for me.

Behind all that confidence and composure was a woman who had survived the worst kind of crime.

She gave me a small wave before walking out.

I turned back toward the counter and slapped my forehead.

Why the fuck had I ever promised Lady Lucille that?

Honestly, it made Lady Lucille look much worse in my eyes.

She was calling Gigi impure because someone had forced himself on her.

That was so wrong.

Now I understood why Lady Lucille didn’t want me spending time with Gigi.

She believed it was Gigi’s fault.

Lady Lucille was, sadly, one of those people who believed the victim was to blame.

I grunted under my breath and finished preparing the soup in the sourest mood.

Then I took it to Lady Lucille.

She seemed to have been waiting in bed.

I placed the bowl of soup on the bedside table for her.

She took a sip and smiled in appreciation.

I sat in the chair across from her.

My fingers tangled together as I wondered how to bring up Gigi and defend her.

"What’s on your mind?" Lady Lucille asked.

My stare snapped to hers, and I slowly shifted on the bed, tucking one leg beneath me.

"Gigi was home," I said, watching for her reaction.

The way she grimaced told me everything.

"I know she was. That’s why I’ve been telling you to stay away from her. Did she try to talk to you?" Lady Lucille asked, her nose wrinkling with distaste.

"No," I lied.

"But she really seems like a nice woman. I don’t know why you don’t like her," I said softly.

The way Lady Lucille set her spoon down told me she didn’t like me defending Gigi.

"She’s not a good woman. Besides, I don’t want her with Ragnar," she snapped, making me lower my gaze as my body shivered at the sharpness of her voice.

"I want you with Ragnar."

Her words made my head snap up, my eyes searching hers to see if she was serious.

"Um– Ragnar and I are two completely different people."

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

"My grandson is everyone’s type," she replied, sounding offended that I had suggested otherwise.

"Yeah, he is. But I’m not," I said, pointing at myself.

"Lady Lucille, Ragnar doesn’t like me. Even if Gigi wasn’t in the picture, he would never like me."

I hesitated, biting the inside of my cheek as my fingers curled tightly around the hem of my dress.

"I mean— if it were Theodore or Jaguar–" I paused.

"I would’ve loved that," Lady Lucille admitted.

Her words made me smile.

But my smile faded the moment she continued.

"But I don’t want that." Lady Lucille set her spoon down on the tray and looked at me over the rim of her bowl. "I want you with Ragnar because Ragnar is someone I have no control over. He makes mistakes out of anger and rage. I want someone I love to be with him so our relationship can mend."

She took another slow spoonful of soup before continuing.

"But if an outsider like Gigi becomes part of this family, our relationship never will." She let out a quiet sigh and gently stirred the soup with her spoon.

She dabbed the corner of her mouth with a napkin before looking back at me.

"As for Jaguar and Theodore, they’re already close to me, so I don’t need to bring them any closer."

Her fingers tightened slightly around the bowl as she met my gaze.

"I want Ragnar close to me, and I believe marrying him to someone I cherish is the only way I can bring him back to me." She lifted another spoonful of soup to her lips, her expression softening just a little before she took a sip.

Lady Lucille’s plan stunned me. I realized, I had to rely entirely on Gigi or else I will never get to be with Theodore.
