Verity:
"That is something to be considered," Ragnar remarked, his hands still tucked into his pants pockets.
I didn’t know why, but they made me uncomfortable.
I wasn’t used to seeing him like that, so I kept glancing at his hands.
My gaze drifted to his pockets before I looked away awkwardly.
"You seem to observe a lot."
As soon as he said that, I felt as though he could read my mind.
I tried to silence my thoughts at any cost from then on.
"I really don’t," I replied with an awkward smile, trying to fool the Alpha King, who possibly knew everything.
Not everything.
If he did, he wouldn’t have blamed my brother for Gigi’s lies.
"You must miss your brother," he observed, making me wonder once again if he really could read my mind.
I looked at him for a moment before turning my gaze toward the darkness.
Then I smiled to myself.
"I’m in a position where I can’t even admit that I do, because then I’d be seen as someone siding with an abuser."
It killed me to say that.
"Well, let’s say no one was judging you. What would your answer be?" he prompted.
My eyes settled on one of the lit houses in the distance, bringing a weary smile to my lips.
It was a smile I knew well, one I used to wear when Justin was with me.
"You know, we were on our own before we were even teenagers," I recalled, the corners of my eyes stinging with tears.
"Justin took responsibility for me, and he did it well."
"He worked nonstop for me, and I would just sit at home, thinking about all the ways I’d repay him when I grew up."
I paused, sniffling back a tear.
"I didn’t know when things had turned sour between him and—,"
I stopped, realizing I had grown too comfortable talking about Justin and the past.
So comfortable that I was about to talk about my brother’s relationship with his girlfriend in front of Ragnar.
"Keep going," he urged.
He turned to lean lightly against the railing, angling himself so he could see my face, probably even read it clearly.
"They were adorable together. I mean, Gigi demanded all of his attention, and Justin— well, he carried a huge burden on his shoulders."
I laughed as I remembered it.
I remembered how everyone used to call me the burden on his shoulders.
"Then, one day, it was suddenly revealed that my brother had been abusing Gigi. I’m not sure what turned sour between them," I paused, my lips beginning to quiver.
After a certain point, I couldn’t even share my tears with anyone because, well, the man standing in front of me was the reason things had turned sour between them.
Because this man had an affair with a woman who was already in a relationship and pregnant.
"Anyway. Needless to say, I do remember my brother. But then I remember what he did, and I get so angry that I blame myself for still missing someone who had done something so horrible to a woman."
Those words didn’t mean anything.
They were nothing more than lies meant to hide the fact that I was thinking about revenge.
Ragnar remained silent.
Then, he finally pulled his hands out of his pockets, and somehow, I immediately went on alert.
I quickly decided to change the topic.
I didn’t know why.
It felt as though the old Ragnar, the brutal one, the cold one, the one who had left me in bed in pain, was back.
"Anyway, seeing Gigi happy at least eases a little of the guilt," I added.
That was my attempt at damage control after already saying too much.
"May I ask you a question?" I continued, hoping to gain a little insight, at least something from this trip.
"Shoot," he replied coldly, turning around and planting his hands on the railing.
The veins on the backs of his hands became more prominent.
"When did you— I mean, when did you and Gigi meet?" I asked.
I was confused.
I mean, Gigi had supposedly been friends with us for a very long time.
At least, I had considered her a friend, even when she had hated my existence with every ounce of her being.
She had never mentioned anything about the Alpha King brothers.
But now that I was watching them interact with her, it seemed as though they had known her forever.
"Since we were children," Ragnar answered. "We’ve been friends ever since."
I was even more shocked.
This was how secretive she had been.
She demanded that Justin tell her everything about his life, yet she had hidden something so significant from us.
While being our friend, she had friends on the side who were powerful enough to shake the entire kingdom.
One thing I noticed about Gigi was that she kept her secrets to herself.
She would never even let herself slip.
That was how fiercely she protected both her truths and her lies.
"What do you suggest?" Ragnar inquired.
I frowned, feeling a strange burn inside me.
What do I suggest?
I suggest we fucking dissect every one of Gigi’s lies and prove my brother’s innocence.
But I didn’t say it out loud.
Ragnar seemed to notice my silence.
"About the lycan," he clarified.
"I don’t think we should make a public statement. I think we should look deeper into this matter," I replied, genuinely concerned about the whole lycan situation.
It was terrifying.
I never wanted to come across it again.
"Then that means we’ll have to plan another trip soon," Ragnar said, gently rubbing his chin.
"Yeah, I think so too. Anyway, I have to see my boyfriend. So, if we can cut this trip short, it’d really help," I mumbled, looking down at my phone.
Roman had texted me a fucking 525 times throughout the day.
He had also been blowing up my phone with one call after another, as though there were no end to them.
Before he completely lost his mind and did something I didn’t want him to do, I decided to go see him and finally have a conversation with him.
