Gigi:
I had convinced Jaguar to eat something before getting some rest, but he insisted that he just wanted to lie down for a while.
So, once he did, I left the room to go and see the brothers.
However, they were already in the middle of a conversation, and I ended up overhearing what else was going on.
It turned out Gigi’s perfect boyfriend wasn’t so perfect after all.
She was only staying with him because she wanted him to inflict pain on her for my sake.
In fact, she wasn’t even trying to protect herself from the stalker.
And then it hit me.
The brothers were going to save her from both the stalker and her abusive boyfriend because they didn’t want her sacrificing herself for me.
That realization gave me strength and courage.
So, I was still seen as a victim, and thankfully, the one person whose opinion of me I cared about felt guilty.
At least one thing had been proven.
Verity wasn’t against me.
That meant I didn’t need to add her to my list of enemies, at least for now.
There was already too much going on, and too many people I was fighting.
Thinking of someone as my enemy or rival when they had done nothing to deserve it would have been stupid.
But now that I knew Verity felt so guilty that she was letting a fucking man abuse her, an idea came to me.
If I asked her for anything now, if I made her my spy, she would definitely work for me.
For that to happen, though, she needed to stay where I could keep an eye on her.
So, having her move into this house wasn’t such a bad idea.
Besides, I did need a virgin after Jenna.
I walked out dramatically and joined Jaguar and Theodore.
"He’s decided to rest," I announced, referring to Ragnar’s decision as I lowered myself onto the single armchair to the side.
The two of them turned to me, and I could already tell they were about to bring up Verity.
"We were thinking about something," Jaguar began.
"Actually, so was I," I interrupted, sighing as I leaned back in the armchair.
I folded my arms across my chest and crossed one leg over the other.
"What is it?" Theodore asked.
Of course.
Whenever I was thinking about something, they would always put their own thoughts aside to hear mine first.
That was just how they were.
"I was thinking about Verity."
As soon as I said that, I didn’t look directly at either of them, but I saw them glance at each other.
"What about her?" they asked almost in unison, clearly caught off guard by the coincidence.
"I don’t know," I murmured, unfolding my arms and rubbing my face. "It’s just that the stalker has attacked her too many times. And don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t appreciate everything you’ve done to keep people safe. It’s just that she’s living in a very run-down area. The lowest of the low in the Omega community."
I paused, taking a slow, deep breath while the two of them simply stared at me, stunned by how closely my thoughts matched theirs.
"So—I was thinking," I continued, clearing my throat. "Since she’s already working with us, how about— if you two are okay with it—"
I hesitated, pretending I was unsure whether I should continue.
"No, please. Keep talking," Jaguar urged.
"I was thinking—what if we offered her a place to stay here for a while? As long as she’s in front of our eyes, the stalker won’t be able to attack her. But we don’t need to tell her that’s the reason. She’s being so stubborn for some reason."
I sighed and pouted as though I had no idea why she was acting that way.
The two of them looked as if they were about to pass out.
"Did you seriously just come up with that?" Theodore asked.
I nodded, frowning and tilting my head, trying to look as innocent as possible.
"Why?" I asked in a soft, gentle voice.
"Because we were just talking about the exact same thing," Jaguar replied, pointing first at himself and then at Theodore.
"What? Really?" I asked, almost laughing at the coincidence, though I deliberately played it down.
I could tell it wasn’t a small thing to them.
They looked completely stunned.
"First of all, that’s crazy," Theodore remarked. "And second, that’s really thoughtful of you, Gigi."
Jaguar nodded in agreement.
"Why not?" I asked. "I mean, last night, when I passed out, I had you guys there to take me to the hospital and everything. But she lives all alone. Who’s to say that if someone attacks her, anyone would even know what happened to her?"
I spoke in a loud, clear voice, making sure they understood just how concerned I was for her.
"Gigi, with all due respect, you’re incredible," Jaguar said.
Then he got up and walked over to me. He lowered himself onto his knees in front of me and gently held my hand.
"Verity is going through a lot too, and it seems like—" He paused. "You haven’t moved on either."
As soon as he said that, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.
I forced a broken smile.
"What makes you say that?" I asked.
"Well, when I told Verity to find herself a safe place, she started crying. She told me she feels guilty because of whatever trauma you’re hiding. I mean, the fact that you asked about her brother’s burial place—Gigi, come on. You know you can’t hide this from us. We’re your friends. You should always share these things with us."
Jaguar spoke very softly, and my heart skipped a beat.
Thankfully, Verity had taken it completely differently.
Because if she had understood my real reason and told the brothers that I was asking about Justin’s burial place out of spite, everything would have fallen apart.
But now that Verity had unknowingly given me an excuse, I realised it was the perfect time to play the victim again.
