Verity:

I’ve been thinking about Fox King ever since.

I mean, I had relaxed my mind so much that I convinced myself nothing like that existed.

And then, suddenly, this whole drama started.

Jaguar had texted me, telling me they had brought Alpha King Ragnar home.

He didn’t give me any other information.

He just said he was sending a car and that I needed to get home quickly because Ragnar had some files to work on with me.

There were also a few files I had brought with me that I needed him to sign.

After I woke up, I dressed in a green pencil skirt with a white shirt and a green blazer.

I left my hair down and waited for the car to arrive.

When it did, I walked out of the house, only to find Mrs. Baker standing at her front door with her soon-to-be son-in-law, Tom.

"What’s the problem?" he wondered out loud.

She wasn’t responding to him.

Tom was the one shouting the loudest, so I slowed down as I entered the gate code.

"Why are you doing this to me?" he shouted.

I could easily imagine several neighbours trying to eavesdrop on whatever was happening in their house.

"It’s just that you upset her!" Mrs. Baker snapped before looking at me and forcing a smile.

I noticed her gesturing for Tom to be quiet.

"Why? No, you cannot silence me! Your daughter expects so much from me, but she gives me so little in return!"

As he shouted, I realised the problem was between the lovebirds.

It also seemed that Mrs. Baker wasn’t letting Tom into the house.

While they continued arguing, I walked over and got into the car.

I’ll come back later to find out what was going on.

At least I knew Jaguar had paid them to keep an eye on me.

When I reached the mansion, I had already spotted the cars outside.

Gigi’s purple Rolls-Royce was parked there as well, so I knew she had returned and was here again.

As soon as I stepped inside, everyone was gathered in the living room with Ragnar, who didn’t look like he knew why I was there.

"Oh, Verity!" Theodore called, hurrying towards me before anyone else.

Jenna, Oliver, Gigi, Gigi’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bundy, and Lady Lucille were all sitting in the living room, having tea when I arrived.

It seemed that only Theodore and Jaguar knew I was coming.

The way Gigi gave me a warm, reassuring smile felt strangely unsettling.

Jaguar, who was coming downstairs, hurried over to me as well.

"Oh, Verity, you’re here," he said, motioning for me to step into the guest room.

I glanced at everyone before walking into the guest room, where the two of them followed me.

Before they could even lock the door, Gigi walked in as well.

Alarm bells immediately started ringing in my head.

"Are you all ganging up on me?" I asked quietly, trying to make a joke out of the situation.

"Yes, we are," Gigi replied with a smile.

"What’s going on?" I asked softly.

"Well, you know Ragnar was sick last night." She paused and placed a hand on her chest. "Thankfully, it wasn’t a heart attack, but he possibly has too much strength flowing through his body. He’s also been overworking himself mentally with all these projects. So we’ve decided he should rest. At the same time, he’s determined to keep working, so we thought, why not bring his work home instead?"

I didn’t know why Gigi was talking so much. She never gave this many explanations unless something was wrong.

What could it be?

"So we thought, why don’t you come and stay here for a while? You already have two events to plan, and you can handle your office work from here as well," Gigi told me, her body language calm and composed.

I had expected something like this from Jaguar.

So when Gigi said it instead, it felt very strange.

I mean, it would have been a huge victory if Jaguar had made this decision himself.

Instead, it felt like Jaguar had first convinced everyone else, especially Gigi.

And honestly, that victory didn’t mean anything like this.

He needed to be vocal about supporting me.

"That’s really thoughtful of you for trying to make things easier for Ragnar, but I have a home, and I’d like to go back there for the night," I replied, even though I had planned to say yes if Jaguar had taken the initiative himself.

I could already tell that Jaguar and Theodore were disappointed by my decision.

"It’s actually a requirement of the job," Jaguar pointed out.

I didn’t even look at him.

He needed to know I was upset with him.

"Verity, I’m asking you to stay."

Then Gigi spoke up.

Her tone was strange.

It was as if she was certain I wouldn’t listen to anyone else, but I would listen to her.

That made me wonder if she’d had a conversation with Jaguar and he’d told her he was feeling guilty.

’So he fucking came here, spilled all my secrets, my private life, everything.’

Because he had to convince his mummy to let his friend come over for a sleepover.

Well, if she was that confident–

If she thought I would never refuse her—

Then I had to change my game plan.

Like I said, I always have a backup plan.

So I gave Gigi a very strained smile.

"Well, now I can’t say no," I murmured, quietly enough that it almost sounded as though I hadn’t meant for anyone to hear it.

But I acted as if I’d said nothing at all.

Gigi thought I would do anything for her.

"See? That’s what I knew," Gigi declared confidently.

Now I was even more curious to know what else Jaguar had told her.

Maybe he’d even told her my boyfriend was abusing me because of her.

’What a tattletale.’

But at least I had made it into the mansion.

"So I’ll ask my buddies to help you move your things. What do you say?" Gigi offered, clapping her hands together.

None of this made any sense to me.

Fine, she believed I had endured so much because of her.

But knowing Gigi, that alone wouldn’t have meant much to her.

If anything, she probably believed I was simply doing the right thing.

After all, she believed it was only fair that someone who had wronged her should face consequences.

So why was she so happily inviting me into the home of the very people she protected as though they had been born solely for her?
