Fated To Three, And I Broke Them All
Chapter 233-Why So Cold Alpha King Ragnar?Verity:
"We were studying until late. Then I realized what time it was and argued with my friends because they didn’t tell me how late it had gotten. And yes, she slapped me, but I slapped her first. So there’s nothing to worry about, nothing to talk about. There’s no drama or anything."
Even as she spoke, her voice cracked.
The smile on her lips while she rambled was fake too.
I felt so bad for her.
Something major was going on in her life, something she couldn’t bring herself to share with anyone.
"Look, Jenna, if you tell me, I might be able to help you," I insisted, moving to sit down beside her.
She immediately straightened her back, making me stop midway.
"Thank you so much for bringing me breakfast. You didn’t have to, though. I’d like to eat my food and then sit down to study, if you’re done talking—"
That was her way of telling me to get the fuck out.
I took a deep breath and shook my head.
"Fine, I’m leaving. But Jenna, hiding it from me won’t help. I just want you to know that whatever it is, I’ll help you."
I left the offer there, then turned around and walked out of her room.
I walked outside and asked a maid where Alpha King Ragnar was.
Apparently, he was in the garden behind his bedroom, so I decided to find him and request at least two days off because Roman was blowing up my phone.
It didn’t seem like he would wait much longer, so I had to leave soon.
"Um, can I have a moment if you’re not busy?" I requested from behind Ragnar as I stepped into his garden.
His garden, however, was rather dark.
There was an angel sculpture in the middle, with tiny sculptures and figurines scattered around it.
They were just weird, to be honest.
Stepping into his garden made me feel like I had entered hell.
Something about this place didn’t feel right.
A garden was supposed to give you a fresh feeling, so why did his feel like somebody had died here?
I carefully examined my surroundings before noticing Ragnar sitting on a bench with a table in front of him and files scattered across it.
"What is it?" he demanded.
His tone was enough of a hint that I wasn’t welcome to bother him with anything unimportant.
"Um, I was hoping to take at least two days off," I began, but Ragnar shook his head before I could finish.
He didn’t even look up at me.
"No. Something important has come up," he stated, causing me to bite the inside of my cheek.
"Is it the monster killings?" I questioned.
He merely nodded, gesturing toward the newspapers and personal information scattered across the table.
Being an Alpha King required him to pay close attention to the safety of not only his own pack members but those of other packs as well, so I understood why he was always alert.
His brothers, however, were pretty chill in comparison.
I mean, they all had their own territories, but Ragnar seemed to be the one doing the most to manage his.
Sometimes, I wondered if his brothers had been handed the Alpha King title on a platter simply because of him, especially since Ragnar was always guiding them and practically telling them what to do with their territories.
Then again, maybe they had earned their titles because they were the most powerful werewolves.
Imagine them not being Alpha Kings.
"So I’ll have to travel with you again?" I asked in bewilderment, trying to understand why this emergency meant I couldn’t take time off.
"You’re not coming anywhere with me," Ragnar responded coldly, making the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
"Why? Isn’t that part of my job?" I challenged rather sternly.
"Is it because of that night?"
As soon as I finally mentioned that night, he snapped his head up, and I watched his jaw clench.
"Nothing happened. Why are you making such a huge deal out of it? You tried to help me with my back pain. That’s all. Why are you making it seem so odd?"
As I continued speaking, I watched his eyebrows knit slightly, possibly at the realization that he was taking it personally while I wasn’t.
I was quite chill about the whole thing, and I tried to give him the hint that it hadn’t meant much to me.
"Well, thanks for bringing up that night when I wasn’t going to," he began, making me roll my eyes. "And secondly, I’m not taking you with me because I’m not taking that risk. That thing nearly chopped you in half last time. I wouldn’t want another innocent person to die because of my responsibilities."
He looked down and continued working, and my body began to relax a little.
"Innocent person?" I uttered to myself, although I didn’t know why those particular words had caught my attention.
His pen stilled for a moment, almost as though he was giving my reaction some thought and had noticed that those words meant something to me.
"Hey!"
As expected, Gigi interrupted us, rushing into the garden, all bubbly.
She came up behind Ragnar and wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing the back of it.
I swiftly looked away.
"I didn’t know you were coming over," Ragnar murmured to her in a soft, gentle tone.
However, I could tell he wasn’t really the public-affection kind of guy because his body tensed as she continued kissing the back of his neck.
"Come on, Gigi. Come sit with me."
He took her hand and gently unwrapped her arm from around his neck, then made it seem as though he had only done so because he wanted her to sit with him.
"What’s going on? Are you guys talking about business? Should I leave?" she inquired.
Ragnar shook his head.
"No, that’s fine. Miss Verity was leaving anyway," he remarked, still looking down at the files as he dismissed me.
