Gigi:

Just a few months ago, I had been the luckiest woman in the world, with four powerful men who loved me so much that they would change the pack rules for me.

But tonight, something had happened to them.

They seemed completely different from how they used to be.

I walked back into the garden and thought about telling Theodore how I was feeling.

Sadly, the moment I approached him, I realized he was already getting ready to leave.

"I’ll be in my room, if that’s okay," he murmured, pouting and avoiding eye contact before walking away.

Taking a deep breath, I turned to Mrs. Bundy.

"I’ll go home now. Why don’t you just wrap up the event?" I told her, watching as a very satisfied look crossed her face.

She didn’t seem confused or even try to ask why I was ending the event before the eclipse had happened.

It was as if she already knew.

And she seemed to be enjoying the failure of the event I had planned, all because I hadn’t told them about it in advance.

She was also upset that I hadn’t informed them earlier, which meant her daughter didn’t have a gown ready.

As if having a gown would have meant her daughter could actually come.

But Mrs. Bundy seemed convinced that the only reason her daughter hadn’t attended was because she hadn’t had time to prepare.

And yes, I hadn’t told anyone. I wanted to be the only one from the mansion to be prepared.

But whatever. The event had already failed anyway.

I went back home, leaving Ragnar a text asking him to let me know when he got home safely.

However, his only response was that everything was fine, he was just checking some reports, and I shouldn’t wait up for him because he might be late.

That night, I couldn’t sleep. Not until I received a text from Jaguar.

We started talking on the phone, and I thought that maybe, just maybe, he really hadn’t been feeling well.

I tried to show him that I hadn’t eaten anything because I was worried about him.

But then I found out that my boyfriend had gone to bring Verity home.

I heard it myself. I heard Jaguar call out for Theodore, Ragnar, and Verity before he ended the call.

Afterward, Jaguar called me again and told me what had happened.

Apparently, Ragnar had gone alone after receiving a video from Verity.

The video had come from her, not from some warrior informing him about reports of the monster.

And Ragnar had Verity passed out in his car.

I didn’t know what to think anymore. It felt like I was losing everything, like the brothers were slipping out of my hands, and I couldn’t understand why.

That wasn’t supposed to happen.

The minute everything happened and I ended the call with Jaguar, I decided to get ready.

By seven a.m., I was heading toward the woods.

I didn’t need to ask my mother to put me in contact with the seer anymore.

The last time my mother had helped me meet her, I had saved the woman’s contact information and decided I would visit her whenever I needed to.

This time, it seemed like I needed her more than ever.

Following a trail that hardly anyone used anymore because it was overgrown with dead plants and spiky thorns, I eventually reached the little cabin tucked among the bushy trees.

I walked up to the door and knocked. Dressed in a white dress and matching cape, I anxiously rubbed my hands together as I waited.

The door opened, and the same old woman, with one eye that looked like stone, smiled at me.

"I thought you still had a few days before that little virgin sacrificed her purity in the water," the woman remarked with a smirk.

I drew one anxious breath after another, and I could tell she had already sensed my vulnerability.

"I’m losing the brothers," I confessed, watching her tilt her head and narrow her eyes at me.

"It’s going to take some time for Theodore to fall for you. In the meantime, remember your—"

She was starting with the same bullshit again.

"I know all of it. It’s Ragnar." I paused as my breath hitched. "He lied to me last night. He completely ignored me so he could go and save another woman’s life."

I paused again before adding, "I found out what happened, and then he lied to me, claiming that he, his brother, and the warriors had all gone together."

I was still standing at the door, and I could tell she had no intention of letting me in yet.

"That girl, is she special?" she inquired, giving me a crooked smile.

"She’s the sister of my abusive ex boyfriend," I explained.

The woman threw her head back and let out a cackle.

"Ah, the circle of life." She shook her head wearily. "What does she look like? Is she a virgin?"

I could already see the spark in her eyes.

"I’ve told you about her. The fat piglet. Worthless. Someone nobody wanted. Well, she is," I confirmed, watching the woman’s face light up.

"Well then, you know what you have to do. Just throw her into the river next. Not only will she be out of your way, but she’ll also help you enslave Jaguar."

She was basically telling me the same thing she had the last time I visited her.

Back then, she had explained that I would need one pure virgin for each brother, with each sacrifice releasing its purity into the river for fifteen days.

I already knew that part.

My problem was Ragnar.

"You’re not getting it. I’m talking about Ragnar," I snapped, my body flinching with anger.

"Well, that is in your hands. I told you the rules. Focus on your men," she concluded.

Then she stepped back and slammed the door in my face.

I turned away and walked back home, deciding I wouldn’t return to the mansion until Ragnar called me there.
