Gigi:

I immediately looked at Theodore, Jaguar, and Ragnar.

They remained silent.

Of course, they didn’t agree with her, but this was the first time I noticed that they didn’t immediately defend my brother.

I mean, Ragnar was always silent. He never really spoke to his grandmother anyway.

But Jaguar and Theodore didn’t say anything.

Tears immediately welled in my eyes as I noticed how much attention Verity had garnered.

Now, everyone was probably thinking of her as the damsel in distress they had to save.

I wondered if this was the moment I was going to be replaced.

"Anyway, I’ve planned a lot of stuff for Jenna’s birthday. It’s in two days. I want to send out invitations, official cards. I sent the emails out a few days ago, letting everyone know to keep that particular day free. And now I want to send a card just for the beauty of it."

Verity went back to her professional manner, immediately talking about business after she had let that little slip-up cause me so much distress.

I knew from the way Jaguar and Theodore were watching me that they had questions. I didn’t like it.

Previously, we had never even had a small argument.

Now, for the first time, they were watching me like they had something to say.

All because of Verity.

"I’ll go home, if that’s okay," I said as I grabbed my handbag and pulled it over my shoulder.

"I’ll drop you home." Ragnar got up and walked over to me. "Wait for me in the parking lot," he added, kissing my cheek before heading back to his room to get his keys.

I walked out silently.

"Gigi," I heard Jaguar call, but I ignored him and kept walking.

To my surprise, someone else was already waiting there.

Jenna.

She was anxiously rubbing her hands together, almost as though she had heard that I was leaving and rushed out ahead of me.

"Gigi, I need to speak with you," she said, rushing over to me.

"What is it, Jenna? Please, no more complaints about stuff. I’m seriously done playing matchmaker between you and Theodore," I told her tiredly, trying to dismiss her.

My brother had told me what was going on.

He had to blackmail her now to get her to sleep with him every night.

They were doing it every night, fine, but I was glad it would be over on her birthday night.

Because if it kept going, Jenna would eventually become confident enough to tell someone, or she would slip up and get someone else involved because she was becoming agitated.

How long could someone keep doing something while being blackmailed?

I didn’t want her to take a drastic step that would trigger an investigation.

"No, it’s not about Theodore. You know, someone is blackmailing me," she uttered, taking deep, heavy breaths.

"What? Jenna, are you sure somebody is blackmailing you, or are you just imagining things again?"

I tried to dismiss her when I saw Jaguar and Theodore come out before Ragnar.

They were going to come over and apologize to me. I knew that.

And once again, they would promise that they would defend me and blah, blah, blah.

But I was in a very bad mood.

"Jenna, please go right now," I warned, eyeing her.

The minute she looked at Jaguar and Theodore, she gulped and rushed away.

As she ran past them, both of them slowed down, looked at her, and then turned their attention to me.

"What is wrong with her?" I asked, shrugging my shoulders tiredly.

The two approached me and stood with their hands in their pants pockets.

"What?" I asked sadly, pouting as I looked at them.

"Gigi, I know you got upset earlier because your brother was mentioned," Jaguar began, as expected, heading straight toward an apology.

But I wasn’t going to let them have my forgiveness so quickly.

Forgiveness wouldn’t come easily this time. I had to make a point and teach them to be more careful.

"But instead, we’d like to start an investigation into Oliver’s background."

That was no apology.

Jaguar agreed with Lady Lucille.

My heart lurched inside my chest in a way it never had before.

"Into my brother’s background?" I repeated, pointing at my chest as I smiled at Jaguar through teary eyes.

"No, don’t— don’t take it like that. It’s just that we believe you were completely unaware of the truth about your brother. That maybe he’s hiding something else. Because–" Jaguar fell silent immediately when he noticed that I hadn’t blinked once while looking at him.

Then I turned toward Theodore.

"And what do you have to say, huh? Do you want to start an investigation into my background too? Because it seems like you guys have already made up your minds," I said as I started to laugh.

The two looked at each other and then at me. There was fear in their eyes, the kind that told me they had realized just how badly they had hurt me.

"No, it’s okay if you want to. I understand. It’s just that your grandma doesn’t like me, so I understand," I continued, placing a hand on my chest.

Then I watched Ragnar come out from behind them.

"What’s going on?" he questioned, probably because he saw my teary eyes.

"Um, nothing. I mean, you wouldn’t want to know," I told him, becoming completely hysterical.

"Gigi, are you crying?" His demeanor changed as he hurried toward me, but I stepped away from all three of them.

"It’s fine. It’s just that you guys don’t even share anything with me anymore. And now you want to start an investigation into my brother, which is completely fine. I mean, if he did something bad, I would want him punished. But the fact that I’m finding out about it in front of everyone is just—" I trailed off, touching my head.

"No, but we didn’t discuss it. It’s not like we talked about it. And that’s why I came out to talk to you alone," Jaguar tried to explain, but I stepped away from him.
