Alaric leaned back into his carriage while continuing to read the book detailing information on the kingdom.

He would occasionally look outside to make sure they were on the correct track. Just like Alice, he knew the location since it was described in a rather detailed manner in the novel.

He hadn’t brought Alice with him because he needed her to lead the way, but because he couldn’t leave her alone, or worse yet, if she ran off to find Evan after he left.

He hadn’t forgotten how she had tried to complete the second quest. Her actions strongly suggested she was trying to align reality with the future she knew.

Recruiting Evan had taken considerable effort. He wasn’t about to let Alice undo it.

He was trying to survive exactly by derailing the future, and that came down to two things.

As long as Evan remained an ally and House Orlen survived, his own chances of survival would increase dramatically.

He had already taken the first step toward the former, and only after fulfilling the latter would he think about what he wanted to do.

Surviving would obviously be his first priority after all.

At the end of volume 1, House Orlen’s Paragon Knight, Marchioness Orlen, was rumored to have fallen at the border.

After the title fell upon the young lord, he began cultivating the official path power system, gaining immense power since he had a marquis title.

That was exactly how he had enough strength to become the final villain of volume 1, and not merely through his Knight rank which he had achieved towards the end.

After the young lord fell to the protagonist, the novel didn’t show what happened to House Orlen up to the point he had read.

Alaric reckoned that House Orlen must’ve at least regressed in title if not fallen completely.

I can’t let that happen.

Alaric clenched his fist.

It was his base of power to survive in this world, how could he let it fall?

Even if the rest of the members survived, the direct line of the main family of a noble house would always struggle to survive if their House fell.

He either had to get his mother, Marchioness Orlen and her army back, or get the king to conduct the title bestowment at the border instead of the capital.

Those were simply the most straightforward solutions, but even they were incredibly difficult. He would have to find a way somehow.

He glanced outside at the two suns in the sky. As it was afternoon, they were shining brightly, blessing the lands with light and warmth.

It had been hours since he had his last meal, so he took out some dry food from a tiny compartment and replenished his energy while reading the book.

The journey to the mine took several hours more than when one travelled to Moliken forest.

It was simply that far, even out of the territory of his House.

It wasn’t that House Orlen’s territory was small. Their horses had been specifically bred for speed, while their carriages were magically enhanced, making even long journeys seem deceptively short.

When they finally reached where the mana crystal deposit was supposed to be, Alaric stepped down from the carriage and swept his gaze across the landscape.

To anyone else, it was nothing more than another stretch of untamed wilderness.

Sparse trees covered the rolling hills while weathered boulders jutted from the earth at odd angles.

There wasn’t a single sign that anything of value lay beneath the surface.

Yet according to his memory, a massive mana crystal deposit slept beneath this very land, waiting to be discovered years from now.

The good news was, the land was an unchartered territory.

The bad news was, that also meant no organization held an exclusive claim over it.

House Orlen could begin mining immediately, but if word spread, noble houses, Magic Towers, Knight Academies, guilds, and even the Crown would all have grounds to stake a claim.

I’ll have to be discreet about it.

In the novel, the protagonist found this mana crystal deposit when he was working under a duke’s house.

By then, he was individually strong, talented and had become renowned throughout the kingdom, therefore he directly received a share of the mana crystals mined from this land.

How the duke house solved the issue of unclaimed land was never mentioned.

"Any ideas on how to mine the mana crystal deposit without letting anyone know?"

Alice, who was still sitting in the coach box seemed to have been thinking about something as she snapped out of her thoughts and looked up at him.

"Huh? Young Lord, did you say something?"

Alaric repeated his question without a hint of impatience.

There was a moment of silence before Alice answered him.

"I think Young Lord should first scout the deposit before making any decisions."

Alaric narrowed his eyes.

She can’t withhold any harmful information from me.

The fact that she suggested this means at least she doesn’t believe that there’s any danger to my life even if the objective reality may be different.

He nodded at her and beamed. "You’ll be coming with me."

Alice scowled, but still steered the carriage towards a fairly secluded location before joining him.

"We’ll first need to find the entrance."

He said, testing her. The latter merely shrugged.

"I don’t know."

Alaric wasn’t fazed by her reply, he simply reminded her. "You do know that I spared your life because of this mana crystal deposit, right?

"How am I to know that there’s a mana crystal deposit if I can’t even find a way to it? I can’t exactly start digging, right? That’s unrealistic."

She gritted her teeth.

"I don’t remember the exact location, but the entrance wasn’t out in the open.

"It was hidden behind a cliff somewhere in this area with a dead tree on it. I only remember having to push aside a curtain of vines before crawling through a narrow opening."

"That wasn’t so hard, was it?" Alaric tilted his head while trying not to let his emotion show.

This is the same as what was written in Tales of Golden Era. How does she know this but not recognise the name of the novel?

Or did she simply hide her expression as well as me?

He shelved this thought and began searching for the entrance alongside Alice.

It took them approximately an hour before they finally found it.

According to Tales of Golden Era, after crawling through this space, Evan enters a wide open space, where he sees mana crystals embedded in the wall.

Alaric pushed aside the curtain of vines and crawled into the narrow opening.

At the end of it was a wide open space alright.

But...

A pair of reptilian golden eyes opened.

Chains clinked against the floor as a creature bound by them woke up.

Alaric’s eyes widened.

What is a baby dragon doing here?
