Final Villain's Broken System: Geniuses Make Me Stronger!
Chapter 12: I’ll get to live?"Young Lord, forgive me for delaying the task you gave me. I was injured mid-battle so I had to retreat. Give me a night to recuperate and I’ll complete it immediately tomorrow morning."
It was a message from Evan.
Alaric’s heart beat wildly as he began considering the implications of it.
Did he get injured because he didn’t get rewards from the first and second quest?
But then he immediately disagreed with his own guess.
In Tales of Golden Era, Evan neither used minor mastery of throwing knives, nor Divine Contract Scroll to complete this third quest about exterminating the bandits.
Not to mention the System gave quests only after considering the current situation of the genius. It wouldn’t give them something impossible.
How could Evan have gotten injured now?
Alaric didn’t know what would happen if something happened to Evan. the fact that he would lose a genius connected to the system was already bad.
But what if something drastic happened to this world which lost its protagonist?
It would certainly be one of the worst case scenarios for him.
He directly asked Evan how he was injured, whose reply soon arrived.
"I received an influx of memories about getting my Certificate of Service mid-battle, which led to the injury."
Alaric heaved a sigh of relief.
So it was really not due to not getting the rewards.
If it’s about memories, I’ll just have to refrain from giving him dangerous tasks for a few hours after completing each quest so that he can receive the memories in a safe situation.
He sent a short message of assurance to Evan before turning his focus back to his own situation.
After discussing the contents of the blood oath with the dragon, he didn’t waste any time and immediately proceeded with it, while the baby dragon did the same.
Once they finished, Alaric asked just to be sure.
"I know I am late, but are there any sensors in this cave?"
The dragon shook its head.
As expected.
Alaric thought.
Dragons were at the peak when it came to magic power systems, and the majority of the surveillance systems ran on magic.
So even if it didn’t have access to mana, there was no telling if the dragon could tamper with the systems.
The people responsible for trapping the dragon clearly didn’t want the dragon to get access to any kind of equipment whatsoever by exploiting any possible loophole or tampering with them.
So they simply didn’t install anything.
Even the mana crystal magic mechanism used to power the Grock chains were hidden behind the cave walls.
Alaric was about to leave the cave to get materials to light a fire when he turned around and asked.
"You don’t mind me leaving? What if I don’t come back to free you? We haven’t made any oath regarding that, you know."
The dragon shook its head.
"I’ve been trapped for as long as I remember. All my life I’ve only seen this tiny cave and felt the pain of these chains and my blood getting removed.
"Freedom is a luxury I’ve long stopped hoping for. I’ve made peace with the fact that I might die here. You not doing anything to harm me is already enough for me."
Alaric felt a flicker of sadness for the dragon but he kept silent and left.
When Alice saw Alaric returning, she was surprised.
He managed to get out alive from that huge beast?
There’s not a hint of injury on him. He really is stronger than I thought.
But this incident also spurred her on to align reality with her story.
The more I align reality with the plot of my story, the more memories I’ll unlock about myself and the story, and also get stronger.
In the beginning, I only knew the story till the part where the protagonist killed the young lord, but after aligning reality with two plot lines, I’ve unlocked memories of some story beyond that.
I should try and get reality back to my story so I can be safe and such incidents won’t be repeated.
"What are you thinking about?"
Alaric’s question pulled her out of her thoughts, causing her to look at him.
"Nothing."
"Plotting to kill me?"
Alice snapped. "Can’t you see that I suffered no backlash? I genuinely didn’t know about it, not that I hid it."
Alaric laughed, entering the carriage and taking out all the fire gel. It was an alchemical invention by the mages.
House Orlen was primarily a military house, so they had the habit of carrying a military kit which contained the fire gel.
It was useful to start signal fires, burn documents, sterilize blades and light campfires quickly.
Fire gel burned hotter than charcoal, and made no smoke.
It would be especially effective in the cave where ventilation was only possible through the narrow space he had crawled through.
Alaric took the jar of fire gel and a small packet of ignition powder which was used to light the fire gel and headed back towards the cave.
"Stay here. Look out for suspicious people, I’ll be back." Alaric instructed Alice as he walked away.
After crawling through the narrow crevice, he showed the items in his hand to the dragon.
"Look, I’m back."
The dragon’s eyes carried hope within them when Alaric returned. He wasn’t just happy that he could finally be free but that someone had cared enough about him.
He had no idea that Alaric’s real objective had always been the quest and mana crystal deposit.
"I’ll owe you one." The dragon spoke in a serious voice.
Alaric smiled, pleased by the dragon’s manners.
Getting the favor of a dragon. That’s fifty percent of my plan complete.
Alaric applied the fire gel to the area of chains farthest from the dragon because he didn’t want the heat to travel through the metal and harm the dragon.
He had zero intention to even slightly risk triggering the blood oath even if he only had the dragon’s best intentions in his mind.
As Alaric moved around applying the fire gel to all the chains, he asked.
"By the way, do you have a name?"
"My name is Zephyr Nightscale. Weak human, what is your name?"
Alaric was startled at being called weak, as he laughed.
"What is your strength?"
The baby dragon raised its chin.
"I am quite young by standards of the dragon race and already have the strength of first rank, which is called Knight and Mage.
"Since my physical body is as strong as a Knight and can use as many spells as a Mage can, you can say I am at the peak of first rank."
"That’s quite strong. My name is Alaric Orlen."
As he applied the last of the fire gel, he asked.
"I assume you’ll want your revenge on these people, right? Are you confident of that once you’re free?"
"No."
"Need help?"
"You’re too weak."
"I’ve killed a Knight under some special circumstances."
I can’t let you die out there. I’ll lose a genius connected to my System that way.
The dragon went silent, his eyes reassessing the weak human.
Everything I know about the world comes from the knowledge passed down through my bloodline.
I planned to kill everyone even if it meant dying.
But...
Maybe I can personally experience the world I have only known of through my bloodline?
There was silence in the cave as Alaric opened the packet of ignition powder.
As he was about to pour the ignition powder, the dragon finally spoke.
"All these years I’ve spent here, I’ve pieced together quite a bit from their conversations. There are two Knights, one Mage, and a handful of Squires.
"I’ll handle the two Knights and the Mage, you handle the rest.
"As soon as the chains break, I’ll only need an hour to recover my strength. We’ll strike then."
Alaric smiled once again as he scattered the ignition powder, lighting all the fire gels.
As the fire burned and the chains melted, he thought.
Getting two favors from a damn dragon.
That’s a hundred percent of the plan completed.
