Alaric thought of the information contained in the rumors.

There is zero chance House Yuglev saw me fighting, else they might’ve taken a different set of actions.

Most likely, they had a mage check the group’s last known location. That is how they must’ve been able to see traces of battle.

There was also no use in removing the remaining traces of battle, because there was barely anything left in the first place.

The hunting squad had at least that much common sense to clean the battlefield since suspicious people had been found there.

The mage must’ve found the bare minimum traces that had escaped the hunting squad’s notice and used them to conclude that a battle had taken place.

Being a mage, they could also investigate from afar without even needing to cross the border of House Orlen’s territory.

I can certainly accuse House Yuglev of having a mage secretly investigate our territory from afar, but that is no use either.

They can simply ditch the mage by saying that the mage acted on their own and wasn’t instructed by the house.

And even if, by some stroke of stupidity, they admitted responsibility, it wouldn’t change the fact that a battle had indeed taken place.

Alaric clenched his fist.

He had just entered this world, no matter how much political acumen he had from reading countless books, reading and experiencing were two different things.

With just one move, House Yuglev had put House Orlen in an extremely dangerous position despite suffering a loss.

Truly, one couldn’t stay as a noble house if they weren’t well versed in politics.

Even if he took his people to clean every last bit of trace, it was of no use.

Because the royal family had a special group of people who remained unique even by the end of volume one.

The Divine Inspectors! They were known to have a special set of eyes!

Their eyes could trace the past and determine whether someone was lying.

Erasing the traces was a useless endeavour. If the royal family decided to investigate the incident, the truth would eventually come to light regardless of how thoroughly they cleaned the battlefield.

Alaric thought for a long time.

Territory...

Unknown people...

Gradually, his eyes brightened. As a beautiful plan formed in his mind, a grin stretched over his face.

Finally, he broke out laughing, scaring even Alice who was sitting in the driver’s coach box.

"What’s the happy occasion, Young Lord?"

"Nothing, I just thought of something."

When they reached the mansion, Alaric got off the carriage, and walked towards the entrance without waiting for Alice.

She would have to park the carriage and instruct the servants if some changes of maintenance were needed and also let the stablehand know if the horses needed care.

All of that would take time, it was better if he went ahead first.

Just after he stepped inside the mansion, his system sent a notification.

[Quest: Defeat Young Lord Kronic (Evan Lionheart)]

[Reward: Lithy Flower*5]

The sixth quest had arrived! And it had completely deviated from the quest in the novel!

Alaric grinned. Good news really did come in batches.

Once either Zephyr or Evan completed their quests, he would finally unlock the System Shop!

Alaric asked for an explanation about the reward from the system and was gobsmacked.

Lithy flower could actually speed up the progress in Squire rank!

Once one consumed it, their progress would speed up by four times for eight hours.

Alaric compared his previous training schedule with the one he could follow after obtaining the flowers and realized that he could reach the Knight rank in at most a week.

The problem was Young Lord Kronic. He was the heir of Viscount House Drakeford.

Fortunately, he wasn’t currently present within their territory but studied in Sunward Knight Academy, the same one Evan graduated from.

He knew this because House Orlen had information on all the houses bordering its territory.

Alaric didn’t waste any time. Evan had already returned from his mission, he called him over and said.

"I have another task for you. Rest for a day, use blood from the beast corpses and start tomorrow, but you’ll have to be quick."

Alaric had to give Evan some time for personal progress else he would start harboring resentment for non stop tasks.

But since he wanted the system shop unlocked as soon as possible, he still told Evan to get it done quickly. No matter if it was Zephyr or Evan, he still wanted the fifth quest completion soon.

The protagonist readily nodded.

Seeing that Evan agreed, Alaric smiled.

"Good. House Drakeford has really been a pain in the ass recently. I can’t do anything to them currently but I can’t just keep still like this.

"Tomorrow, you need to return to Sunward academy and beat up Kronic. He is the young lord of House Drakeford."

Evan was startled. Not giving him the time to think, Alaric continued.

"Sunward academy won’t deny you entry since you’re a recent alumni. Just tell them you’re here for some work.

"Find a place away from the main paths and beat up Kronic as soon as you get the opportunity. Make sure he doesn’t realize who attacked him, and leave immediately once you’re done.

"The academy won’t interfere much in a student’s personal dispute as long as you don’t heavily injure him.

"You get it?"

What a scumbag.

Evan couldn’t help but judge Alaric. Just because he couldn’t deal with the house directly, he would resort to beating up its heir?

He grit his teeth, feeling a load of trouble coming.

I feel like this young lord is going to be a source of endless troubles in the future. Alas, I’m a greedy man. I still want those corpses.

I was ready to do anything for personal power, this should be easy.

Calm down Evan. This is easy. This is easy.

He took a deep breath and nodded at Alaric.

"I’ll do it."

Alaric grinned and patted Evan’s shoulder.

"I knew I could rely on you."

After he said that, he left. On the way to his room, he met Steward Edwin who had an anxious expression on his face.

"Young Lord, the rumors in our territory are getting concerning. Do—"

Alaric raised a hand, stopping him from speaking any further. "I’ll handle it. Nothing will happen to House Orlen."

As he walked up the stairs, Steward Edwin fell into thought.

Young Lord has certainly changed a lot. Did something happen when he went out drinking?

Has he taken a liking to a young lady?

Did she tell him that she’ll only accept him once he starts acting like a proper young lord or something like that?

Did Young Lord change because he wants to prove himself for her?

Steward Edwin’s expression suddenly turned stiff when he thought of something.

Wait... could that person be that maid he has been taking with him everywhere?

In the past he would never ask for a particular servant every time he wanted to leave the mansion.

Young Lord with a maid? How could it be?

Edwin walked back to his study with a face full of sorrow.
