Final Villain's Broken System: Geniuses Make Me Stronger!
Chapter 33: Two little shits"Bring her in." Alaric spoke after a moment of thought.
The guard bowed and left the study.
Alaric leaned back in his chair, staring at the closed door with a speechless expression.
Zephyr, you little bastard. What did you do now?
He remembered the message the baby dragon had sent him after eliminating the hidden slave market in Tikka Town.
Zephyr had mentioned freeing the slaves, but there had been no mention whatsoever about directing one of them straight towards House Orlen.
A few minutes later, the door opened again. The guard returned with a young girl following behind him.
She looked around ten years old, with dusty blonde hair reaching down to her waist and brown eyes which moved around the study curiously. Her clothes were worn and visibly too large for her thin body.
The servants had apparently tried cleaning her up before bringing her inside, but there was only so much they could do in a few minutes.
The girl stopped several steps away from the desk and awkwardly bowed.
"Young Lord."
Alaric raised an eyebrow. At least she knew how to address him.
"What is your name?"
"Mira."
The moment he focused on her, the System remained completely silent.
Not a Genius.
Alaric wasn’t particularly disappointed. The System’s standards were absurdly high. If every random person he met turned out to be a Genius, then geniuses wouldn’t exactly be rare anymore.
He gestured towards the chair opposite him.
"Sit. Tell me why you came here."
Mira hesitated before sitting at the edge of the chair.
"The invisible person told me that if I wanted to become powerful, I should meet the Young Lord of House Orlen."
Alaric inwardly cursed Zephyr once again.
"And why do you want power?"
Mira’s expression changed immediately, as if the question forced her to relieve unpleasant memories to come up with an answer.
"My village was attacked. They killed my father when he tried to stop them. My mother had gone to the city, so only my father, my little brother and I were at home."
She clenched her tiny fists on her knees as she continued.
"They took me and my brother, but we were separated later. I don’t know where he is."
"I was weak, so I couldn’t do anything. If I was strong, my father wouldn’t have died. My brother wouldn’t have been taken away either."
She looked directly at Alaric.
"So I want to become powerful."
Alaric didn’t give her some comforting speech.
From what she described, her conclusion wasn’t even wrong.
If she had possessed the strength of a Knight, those slave traders probably wouldn’t have been able to touch her family in the first place.
"Did the invisible person tell you anything else?"
Why did that little shit think of sending her to me?
Alaric felt baffled.
Mira frowned. "He was annoying."
That sounds like Zephyr alright.
Alaric was amused but prompted Mira to continue.
"He kept saying we should’ve hidden instead of fighting people stronger than us." Her voice grew louder as she remembered it. "My father died protecting us and he said we should’ve HIDDEN!"
Alaric narrowed his eyes in thought.
So that’s what happened.
Zephyr’s obsession with hiding wasn’t difficult to understand.
The dragon had spent almost his entire life imprisoned. After finally obtaining freedom, he awakened a Divine Ability based on the concept of Freedom itself, and its function was invisibility.
To Zephyr, not being found meant not being captured.
Therefore hiding and freedom had probably become almost the same thing in his mind.
On the other hand, the recently freed slave in front of him, Mira, clearly thought differently.
For her, being unable to fight back was exactly what had taken her freedom away.
Interesting.
Alaric suddenly had an idea. "Do you know anything about Knights or Mages?"
Mira shook her head. "I know they’re powerful."
"That’s about what I expected."
Alaric leaned forward.
"There are three main power systems in this kingdom. Body, Magic and Official."
He briefly explained the difference between them, though he skipped most of the complicated details.
The Official Path was obviously useless for someone in Mira’s situation since she possessed no position of authority.
As for the Magic Path, she would need access to a breathing technique belonging to the Magic Towers, which was even more unrealistic.
That left the Body Path.
Mira listened with complete focus when he explained that someone who wanted to follow the Body Path first needed to practice a breathing technique and sense mana.
"Can I learn that?" Her voice didn’t hold curiosity, but just sheer desperation.
"You can." Alaric nodded.
Her eyes immediately lit up, but Alaric raised a hand before she could get excited.
"But that doesn’t mean you’ll become powerful quickly. Your talent matters. Resources matter. Training matters. Even then, becoming a Knight isn’t something you accomplish in a few days."
Mira nodded repeatedly.
"I’ll train."
Easy to say.
Alaric firsthand knew exactly how miserable practicing a breathing technique could be when someone had terrible talent.
The previous owner of his body had spent years making barely any progress despite receiving ridiculous amounts of resources.
Still, there was no harm in letting her try.
"First, you’ll stay here."
Mira blinked. "Here?"
"At the mansion. I’ll let the servants prepare a room for you. Spend your time studying. I’ll let you exchange for resources at half the price, I’ll have a squire accompany you on missions.
"Once my people find your brother, I’ll take him under my wing too. After finding your mother, you can decide if you want to stay or leave."
The only reason he was even considering helping her this much was because Zephyr was a genius connected to his system.
That baby dragon was extremely valuable. If Mira really ended up influencing his thinking about freedom, then keeping her around might even help Zephyr understand his Divine Ability better.
She immediately stood up with tears in her eyes and bowed.
She was simply a child. Someone helping her so much after going through such a traumatic experience very easily overwhelmed her with emotions.
Alaric smiled slightly at her before picking up the communication device on his desk.
"Tell me everything you remember about your village, the people who attacked it, and where you last saw your brother."
Mira immediately straightened and recounted everything she knew.
Alaric contacted the information department and instructed them to investigate.
The hidden slave market had already been destroyed, but its records, routes and surviving victims might still give them something.
After he finished, Mira hesitated before asking.
"Young Lord... will you really help me become powerful?" She still couldn’t believe she so easily acquired the means to become powerful.
Mira didn’t have the same status as Alaric. For people like her, Knights and Mages were like legends. And legends shouldn’t be so easy to grasp.
Precisely because she saw a chance to become those legends, she came to the House Orlen’s mansion no matter how difficult it got for her by asking countless people on the road for directions in tattered clothes and torn shoes.
She relied entirely on the mercy of guards to not throw her out in the wilderness when she hid onto caravans travelling between cities, towns and villages, and sustained herself entirely on stolen leftover food.
Mira had learned through experience that people were less likely to chase and beat her up if she stole food they had stopped eating and were about to throw out.
Alaric saw helping her like a tiny investment to benefit a genius connected to his System, but to Mira, Alaric was an individual as mighty as heavens who bestowed upon her a life turning opportunity.
Alaric shrugged.
"I’m not helping you become powerful. I’m giving you the chance."
Whether she could actually do anything with that chance depended on her.
Just then, air moved around the open window before Alaric felt a weight settling on his shoulder.
Mira sensed something as she looked up.
A familiar young voice suddenly spoke from empty air.
"You little human, you actually came here? Hehe Alaric, how is my gift? She was so annoying I sent her to you. How does it feel talking to her?"
Mira’s face instantly twisted in anger.
"You!"
Alaric closed his eyes as he massaged his temples in exasperation.
Great.
