Final Villain's Broken System: Geniuses Make Me Stronger!
Chapter 34: Crown please be lazyAlaric didn’t want the two little shits making trouble in the study so he simply sent Mira out with a servant. He had already told Ryu how to arrange her.
As soon as Mira left the study, Zephyr cancelled his invisibility and jumped from Alaric’s shoulder onto the table.
"Isn’t she annoying?"
Alaric stared at him. "No. Won’t you ask me why I was helping her?"
The dragon shook his tiny head. "Back then, you had no reason to help me as well, yet you did. Therefore, I have no right to ask you why you are helping her."
Alaric was speechless.
This little guy keeps switching between having the maturity of a child and an adult. Can this perhaps be a side effect of bloodline memory inheritance?
Zephyr then curled up on the table. "I’m tired."
"Sleep somewhere else. I have work to do."
The tiny dragon ignored him and closed his eyes.
Alaric couldn’t be bothered to argue.
He shook his head and turned his attention back to the political situation.
There was nothing more he needed to do publicly for now. He had already given the speech, spread the information he wanted to spread, and openly accused House Yuglev.
The next move belonged to the Crown.
However, that didn’t mean he could simply sit around and wait without preparing for what would follow.
He had deliberately made the situation blow out of proportion so that the Royal Family would be forced to deploy Divine Inspectors.
Alaric pulled several books from the shelves behind his desk and began going through everything House Orlen had recorded about Divine Inspectors. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much useful information.
The Divine Inspectors belonged directly to the Royal Family, and information regarding their abilities wasn’t something freely circulated among noble houses.
Most of what Alaric knew actually came from Tales of Golden Era.
In the novel, Divine Inspectors had appeared several times during politically sensitive investigations.
Their special eyes could perceive connections left behind by people, objects and other such things, but those connections couldn’t be traced for an indefinite amount of time.
Connections weakened with time.
The first rule was that weak connections faded far faster than strong ones.
Alaric remembered one scene from the novel where the protagonist had accompanied a Divine Inspector to investigate an old battlefield.
The Inspector could still identify strong connections belonging to people who had stayed there for years, but traces left by a battle several days earlier had no connection to follow properly.
The second rule was that the connections didn’t remain equally visible from both ends. The connections on living beings faded faster than those on non-living things.
There was this case in Tales of Golden Era where a group of people had fought in an area and died. When the battlefield was investigated, the special eyes displayed threads connecting to the corpses. But when the corpses were investigated, no connection to the battlefield appeared.
The novel had never given an exact duration, and several factors could affect the result.
Weather, mana, the strength of the person involved and even the type of activity in the area could affect how long the connections remained.
Still, Alaric had read enough examples throughout Tales of Golden Era to make a rough estimate.
He mentally counted how much time had passed since the battle in Moliken Forest.
I need two more days for the connections to fade. Three to be safe.
Alaric frowned.
According to his original plan, this wouldn’t have been an issue at all.
He had expected everything to take a few more days before the situation escalated to the point where Divine Inspectors were needed. By that time, the connections left behind in Moliken Forest would’ve naturally faded.
But reality didn’t always follow the plan one had in mind.
Things had moved faster than he expected.
Fuck. I’ve very likely successfully forced the crown to use Divine Inspectors, but now I need to stop those Divine Inspectors from investigating the battlefield too early.
At this point, whether his plan succeeded or collapsed could genuinely depend on those two or three days.
The Ulyt soldiers his mother had sent him had spent most of their lives in the Ulyt Kingdom. Even if they died elsewhere, their strongest connections would still point toward Ulyt. Such strong connections stayed for a long time.
The same applied to the individuals of House Yuglev, who had trained, lived and served in Yuglev territory for years.
The corpses are fine. They wouldn’t trace to the battlefield anymore. No one would know where those corpses last fought their battle. They would only trace connections to their respective territories, exposing their identity.
Alaric placed the book on the table.
The battlefield isn’t fine.
Tiny traces of his fight with those individuals from House Yuglev still existed in Moliken Forest.
A battle lasting several minutes couldn’t create the same kind of connection as someone spending the majority of their life in one territory.
Therefore, those connections were weak enough that Alaric only needed a few more days for them to disappear.
The problem was that they definitely had not disappeared yet.
If a Divine Inspector reached Moliken Forest before those two or three days passed, they could potentially trace the remains of the battle back to the corpses of House Yuglev’s people now present at the southwestern border.
Alaric could already imagine what the Divine Inspector would ask once they traced that connection.
"If Marchioness Orlen killed House Yuglev’s people at the border, why are traces connected to those same people present in Moliken Forest?"
"Fuck." Alaric combed his fingers through his black hair.
Normal investigators could be fooled by altered wounds, moved corpses and fabricated explanations.
The special eyes didn’t give a shit about any of that.
I’m gambling on a fucking novel’s consistency now.
He didn’t particularly like that thought, but Tales of Golden Era was the best source of information he possessed regarding Divine Inspectors.
Now that he knew exactly what he needed, Alaric began considering whether he had any option apart from buying time.
Cleaning the battlefield himself was out of the question.
If he entered Moliken Forest now and removed the remaining traces, he would create fresh connections belonging to himself.
The special eyes couldn’t replay the past itself. They only saw the connections left behind.
That limitation was the only reason Alaric’s plan had any chance of working in the first place.
They wouldn’t see Alaric physically cleaning the battlefield. They would simply arrive at a clean battlefield and discover that the fresh connections present led directly toward him.
Naturally, the conclusion anyone would reach was that Alaric had deliberately removed evidence.
The second option was sending House Orlen’s people to clean everything.
It was safer for him personally, but much more dangerous overall.
House Orlen still had a Knight and plenty of Squires available. He could simply send them into the forest and have them destroy everything remaining from the battle.
Then if the Divine Inspectors discovered fresh connections belonging to House Orlen’s people, Alaric could claim that they had fought the Ulyt infiltrators.
The story could technically work. The problem was the people themselves.
He would need to explain what needed to be cleaned and why. Then he would need to make sure none of them made a mistake if questioned later.
Divine Contract Scrolls could force secrecy, but every additional person involved was another possible problem. Another possible question. Another possible leak.
Currently, very few people knew anything about the corpse exchange.
Zephyr had been perfect for transporting the corpses because he could go invisible, already knew many of Alaric’s secrets and had a blood oath with him.
Not to mention the baby dragon seemed to genuinely trust him to some extent because Alaric had freed him from decades of imprisonment.
Adding another twenty people into the plan would be fucking stupid.
As for fabricating new traces to support his story, Alaric dismissed that idea even faster.
I’ll probably create more problems than I solve.
After going through everything, Alaric finally accepted that there was no clever method to eliminate the problem.
He simply needed time.
Two days. I just need two days. Three to be safe, but please I hope I get two days.
Until then, nobody could be allowed to investigate Moliken Forest.
The safest move is to touch absolutely fucking nothing.
Alaric picked up his communication device and contacted the Guard Captain.
"Take a group to Moliken Forest. I’ll give you the exact location. Establish a perimeter around the battlefield and don’t let anyone enter or touch anything."
The Guard Captain asked, "May I know why, Young Lord?"
"Just preserve the site until I give further instructions. Don’t ask anything."
"Understood."
Alaric ended the communication.
The guards didn’t need to know anything else.
They weren’t being asked to destroy evidence, fabricate traces or lie about what happened. They were simply doing what their Young Lord told them to.
If Divine Inspectors questioned them later, they could truthfully explain every single order they had received.
Now no one can enter the battlefield and investigate before I can react.
If they happen to have someone with invisibility like Zephyr, I’m done for.
At that point, I’ll just wash my neck and wait to die.
Now he would have to find some legitimate reason to keep them outside for another day or two.
Alaric tapped his fingers against the table.
Two days.
Just give me two fucking days.
