Final Villain's Broken System: Geniuses Make Me Stronger!
Chapter 38: Heaven’s favouriteAs Alaric stood silently, alone, in the middle of the night, he received a notification from the System.
[Quest: Find one missing member of Mira’s family without revealing your race - Zephyr Nightscale]
[Reward: Starsteel Throwing Knives ×12]
Alaric’s attention immediately focused on the reward.
Starsteel Throwing Knives?
His current throwing knives were ordinary weapons. That wasn’t much of a problem while he was still a Squire, but once he became a Knight and started strengthening his body with mana, things would change.
With Minor Mastery of Throwing Knives, Alaric could throw them with terrifying precision. If his physical strength increased several times on top of that, ordinary knives might simply be unable to withstand the force he applied to them.
Specialized knives made from a stronger material would solve that problem perfectly.
Good reward.
Since the divine inspectors and others were contacting their people, Alaric had nothing to do. So, he also contacted Zephyr through their communication devices and explained the new task.
There was silence for several seconds before an offended young voice replied.
"Why am I finding this annoying human’s family?"
"This time you can take it slowly. There’s no urgency."
"Weak human, why are you not answering my question?"
Alaric ignored that and continued. "After you complete this task, I’ll help you make some progress towards Champion Mage free of cost."
Zephyr immediately became silent.
Then his voice became considerably more pleasant.
"Free?"
"Yes."
"You won’t ask me for anything?"
"No."
The baby dragon sounded happy immediately. It wasn’t even because he desperately wanted to become stronger. Zephyr himself just found out that he simply liked free goodies.
Alaric inwardly chuckled.
Technically, it’s free for me too. Most of the cost will come from whatever I scam out of Grok anyway.
Zephyr accepted the task much more enthusiastically after that, and the communication ended.
Alaric then entered the temporary settlement House Orlen had established near Moliken Forest. Since he had no intention of leaving the battlefield unattended, a personal tent had already been prepared for him.
As for the Divine Inspector and the ducal representatives, they had been escorted to a nearby town and given rooms in one of its best inns.
House Orlen might be refusing them access to Moliken Forest, but that didn’t mean they had forgotten how to receive guests properly.
Alaric had also used one of the Eyes of Surveillance and placed it on the Divine Inspector.
There was naturally some risk.
The man’s special eyes were extremely unusual, so Alaric couldn’t be certain whether he might somehow discover the Eye of Surveillance attached to him.
However, even if he did discover it, there was nothing connecting the item back to Alaric.
Worth the risk.
The items rewarded by the System were all connected to him. No one else could use them or see that the items belonged to Alaric.
Through Tales of Golden Era, Alaric knew that not even Paragons could see anything connecting System items to the user.
Once inside the tent, Alaric resumed using the Lithy Flower and took out the Mana Channel Construction Orb.
He had lost enough cultivation time dealing with politics recently.
Approximately two hours later, while he was circulating mana and constructing another portion of his mana channels, his communication device suddenly activated.
It was Evan.
"Young Lord, I received a set of memories again. This time it is something different."
Alaric stopped cultivating.
"What?"
Evan explained that the new memories he received this time were, as usual, different from reality.
In those memories, he had taken another route while travelling toward House Halden and stumbled across an abandoned mine near the outskirts of their territory.
A monster had attacked him there.
Unable to defeat it directly, the Evan inside those memories had been chased deep inside the mine.
He eventually used the terrain to kill the monster, but during the fight, several rocks had been dislodged and exposed an opening which he was certain hadn’t belonged to the original mining route.
Alaric became speechless.
What the hell?
"Did you explore it?"
"No. The me inside those memories still had the task you gave me, so I left after killing the monster."
There was a pause before Evan sent another message.
"But my task is already complete now. Should I go back and investigate?"
Alaric couldn’t even think of a reply immediately as he was still processing the information.
In the inherited memories, Evan had used another route, encountered a dangerous monster, was chased into an abandoned mine, somehow killed that monster using the environment and then accidentally exposed a hidden passage?
Could this perhaps be an opportunity, knowing that Evan is a protagonist? Is this what being Heaven’s favorite looks like?
Alaric suddenly understood why protagonists constantly stumbled into treasures while normal people could spend their entire lives searching and find absolutely nothing.
Even the danger to the Evan in memories might now somehow turn into an opportunity for this bastard who didn’t even go through all that.
Who knows, maybe he’ll encounter that beast in reality or not.
The strangest part was that Alaric knew nothing about this mine.
Tales of Golden Era had never mentioned such an event. That meant whatever Evan had discovered could be valuable, useless, or ridiculously dangerous.
Alaric briefly considered asking Alice. Then immediately rejected the idea.
There was no reason to expose every unusual event to her just because she possessed strange knowledge about the world. Not to mention he was still wary of her. She had been a little too obedient lately.
Was she up to something? Alaric mused, but put it to the back of his mind and replied to Evan.
"Go if you want, but be careful. If something looks beyond your ability, leave immediately."
"Understood."
After the communication stopped, another System notification appeared.
[Quest: Break through to Knight - Evan Lionheart]
[Reward: Reflex Calibration Serum]
[The reward is safe for Squires to consume.]
Alaric chuckled.
There wasn’t even any need to tell Evan about this quest. The man was already trying to reach Knight regardless.
Let him find his own opportunities too. I can’t control every single thing the people around me do.
A short while later, another message arrived, this time from Ryu.
The Royal Family’s officials had begun inspecting the other portions of House Orlen’s territory for the promotion assessment.
Alaric read the message before simply closing his eyes again.
House Orlen should be capable of passing that inspection without my help. I can’t involve myself everywhere.
His gaze shifted through the opening of the tent toward the distant silhouette of the town where the Divine Inspector and the ducal representatives were staying.
My work here isn’t finished.
