Final Villain's Broken System: Geniuses Make Me Stronger!
Chapter 42: Several close callsAs they left Moliken Forest, Alaric was in a considerably better mood than when they had entered.
The most dangerous part of the investigation had ended without exposing anything, and the Divine Inspector was now willingly walking toward the evidence Alaric actually wanted him to examine.
After spending the entire night mentally cursing the man, Alaric suddenly realized something.
"Divine Inspector, what is your name?"
The man glanced sideways at him, seemingly caught off guard by the abrupt question.
"Ronan Flenn."
"Ronan Flenn..." Alaric repeated before smiling. "We’ve spent the entire night together and I only found out your name after sunrise. How rude of me."
Ronan looked at the cheerful young lord suspiciously.
"You seem rather happy."
"You should know the results of the territory inspection conducted by the royal officials. It is progressing without any major issues. Why wouldn’t I be happy?"
More importantly, you found absolutely nothing useful.
Ronan naturally couldn’t hear Alaric’s thoughts. After walking for another few moments, he asked, "Who retrieved the corpses from the battlefield?"
"The hunting squad."
Ronan raised an eyebrow. "Don’t tell me you carried all those corpses back by yourself."
Alaric laughed. "You overestimate me."
There was no fear in his heart when this topic came up.
The hunting squad had never seen the faces of the original corpses.
Back then, Alaric had specifically ordered them not to remove the masks before transporting everything back to the mansion.
To the hunting squad, what they found had simply been fifteen masked Squires and one masked Knight lying alongside the two beasts.
As for things like physique, height and general body structure, Marchioness Orlen obviously wasn’t stupid enough to send completely different corpses.
Corpses of beings with extraordinary power didn’t rot and deteriorate as fast as normal corpses.
The southwestern border had been swallowing soldiers for months. There was hardly a shortage of dead Ulyt soldiers for her to choose from.
Once they returned to the temporary camp outside Moliken Forest, Ronan had the members of the hunting squad who originally recovered the bodies called over.
The squad leader stood before him while several others waited nearby.
"When you arrived at the battlefield, what did you find?"
The man answered immediately.
"Two dead beasts and sixteen masked human corpses, Lord Inspector. Fifteen carried the pressure of Squires while one was clearly a Knight."
"You saw their faces?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Young Lord ordered us not to remove their masks or tamper with the bodies."
Ronan’s special eyes remained active throughout the questioning.
There was no reaction from his special eyes at all.
No lies? Was Alaric really telling the truth? Was the infiltration real?
Ronan then remembered the battlefield which didn’t display connections to the corpses. The divine inspector was well aware of the information of his own special eyes.
It meant that the fight had happened way earlier than the speech Alaric gave.
He turned to Alaric and asked. "The battle didn’t happen recently, did it? Why did you give the speech so late?"
Alaric shrugged. "I was planning how to make maximum benefit. What? Can I not think for the benefit of my House?"
Ronan was startled when he heard that answer. He fell silent for a moment before nodding.
What is wrong with me? I had almost started believing that whatever this little bastard was doing was for the sake of the kingdom.
How did I not consider that he could be planning how to make the most benefits for his House?
Ronan mentally admonished himself for asking such a stupid question before moving on.
He questioned three more members of the hunting squad separately, changing the wording and order of the questions each time.
The answers remained consistent.
They had arrived after receiving Alaric’s instructions, found sixteen masked corpses together with the beasts, loaded everything for transport, and returned to the mansion.
None had removed a single mask.
"Your people didn’t participate in the battle?" Ronan asked Alaric.
The latter chuckled. "The gigantic beast and that group had exhausted each other. Even someone like me was able to take advantage of that situation."
The information gap worked wonderfully here.
Ronan didn’t know how insanely skilled and powerful Alaric was. Due to no reaction from the special eyes, he could only accept that explanation.
Alaric watched the divine inspector question the entire hunting squad with a faint smile.
This is why you don’t tell people shit they don’t need to know.
There was no need for Divine Contracts forcing twenty people to memorize fabricated stories. There was no need for the hunting squad to carefully avoid certain questions.
They genuinely knew nothing.
Their ignorance was probably a better defense than any lie Alaric could’ve prepared for them.
Unfortunately, Ronan still didn’t appear satisfied.
Once he finished questioning the hunting squad, he turned toward Alaric.
"I found something extremely interesting when questioning your guards."
Alaric was present the whole time, so he knew what the divine inspector wanted to ask. He raised an eyebrow. "Go ahead."
"The corpses were kept under guard after being brought to the mansion."
"Yes."
"Yet at some point in time, the guards were ordered to disperse. By the time they returned, the corpses had been left unattended for a period of time."
Ronan stared directly into Alaric’s crimson eyes.
"An extremely convenient opportunity if someone wished to exchange the bodies."
As expected, no one is stupid. From the current information, the most likely suspicion will obviously be that I’ve switched the corpses.
Alaric had already known that particular gap would look suspicious.
He had done that to make it easier for Zephyr to take away the corpses. And when Zephyr brought back the corpses from the border, he brought them back in a big crate.
He had himself taken that crate filled with corpses inside the now empty room and left after some time.
To the guards standing outside, their young lord had taken an empty crate inside, put all the corpses in the crate then came out.
So technically, that one time where the guards were ordered to disperse so that Zephyr could take the corpse was a genuine gap which the Divine Inspector was looking to exploit.
Ronan continued. "The order was presented as coming from the authority of the House. Considering you were acting as its head, I would like an explanation."
Instead of answering immediately, Alaric gestured for him to follow.
"There’s something you should see first."
Ronan frowned but followed nonetheless.
The ducal representatives came with them as Alaric led everyone through the mansion and eventually toward a cold stone chamber used to temporarily hold the dead before burial.
The smell immediately worsened when the door opened.
A body lay on a low stone platform inside.
Alaric walked over without any ceremony and kicked the corpse lightly in the leg.
"Former Steward of House Orlen."
Ronan looked between the corpse and Alaric in silence. He didn’t know what was going on but he was willing to listen.
Alaric continued with a trace of disgust on his face.
"Usurped my authority and had his eyes on my resources."
His tone contained genuine annoyance.
Ronan was startled to sense that his special eyes gave no indication of a lie. Once again.
What?
Technically, Alaric indeed hadn’t lied.
The steward had repeatedly acted beyond his authority.
Edwin had also very clearly wanted access to whatever resource his young lord was using to make the Mage work for him.
Ronan’s eyes narrowed as his attention returned to the dead steward.
In his mind, several previously strange pieces suddenly fit together.
Valuable corpses stored within the mansion.
A steward usurping the authority of the young lord.
Then guards suddenly receiving an order to leave their posts.
Ronan looked at Edwin’s corpse and asked with a chilled heart.
"You executed him?"
"And? I am not so merciful." Alaric sneered.
The representatives of ducal houses standing behind heard everything. Everyone’s heart unsettled at the thought of how easily Alaric talked about killing the steward for usurping his authority.
This was definitely not the drunkard he had been acting as! Everyone had been fooled! The royal family and the noble houses had all been fooled by this bastard!
Alaric gave the corpse another glance before walking toward the door.
Ronan didn’t ask anything else.
It seems he successfully misunderstood.
Only after stepping outside did Alaric quietly breathe out.
The Inspector had naturally assumed that Edwin had used the authority he had usurped to disperse the guards because he wanted access to the valuable corpses.
Alaric had never said that.
If that whole mess with Edwin hadn’t happened, I would’ve needed to come up with some other bullshit.
For once, the former steward had managed to be useful after death.
Ronan remained suspicious. He still hadn’t completely abandoned the possibility that the corpses had been switched during the period they were left unattended.
But suspicion was exactly that.
Suspicion.
He needed proof. His special eyes gave a visible reaction if they caught someone lying.
Therefore, he couldn’t even lie that his special eye had caught Alaric lying. Because everyone could see that his special eyes hadn’t reacted all along at all.
The battlefield had failed to identify the dead. The hunting squad had never seen their faces. The gap in security possessed a plausible explanation but Alaric had explained it away without triggering his special eyes.
There is only one thing left for me to investigate now.
Ronan looked toward him.
"Take me to the corpses."
Alaric smiled.
"Of course."
Deep within House Orlen’s mansion, sixteen corpses were waiting for them.
Fifteen of those belonged to Squires while the remaining one was of a Knight.
And unlike the battlefield, Alaric already knew exactly where their connections would lead.
The Ulyt Kingdom.
