Final Villain's Broken System: Geniuses Make Me Stronger!
Chapter 43: Pitiful House OrlenThe sixteen corpses were kept in a large underground storage room beneath the mansion.
Ronan entered first, followed by Alaric and the representatives of the ducal houses.
Under everyone’s eyes, the masks covering the corpses were finally removed, revealing fifteen Squires and one Knight.
Alaric stood nearby with his hands folded behind his back. Unlike when the battlefield was being investigated, there was no longer much tension in his body.
Ronan activated his special eyes and began examining them one after another.
Hehehehe.
Alaric couldn’t help but keep chuckling inwardly as his plan was coming to fruition.
He already knew what Ronan would find.
Countless connections stretched away from every corpse. Some were stronger while others had already faded considerably, but the most important ones all pointed toward the same place.
The Ulyt Kingdom.
Ronan spent almost half an hour examining the corpses before finally turning around.
"All sixteen possess extensive connections to the Ulyt Kingdom."
The ducal representatives immediately became serious.
This was no longer merely a possibility Alaric had thrown out during his speech. According to the Divine Inspector himself, these people had spent a significant amount of time inside the enemy kingdom.
However, Ronan didn’t announce any conclusion yet.
There was still one possibility remaining, and everyone knew what it was.
The corpses could have been switched.
A short while later, everyone moved into a large private room. Alaric sat opposite Ronan with a table separating them, while the representatives of the ducal houses watched from the sides.
Alaric and others had all seen the Divine Inspector constantly consuming a potion. Those with discerning eyes all realised it was a mana regeneration potion.
These potions were extremely expensive since they regenerated mana of the consumer within minutes. It could literally decide if one could live or die.
Even for a ducal house, it wouldn’t be a small expense but the royal still did it. It just goes to show how rich the royal family was.
After consuming yet another potion and resting for a few minutes, the divine inspector activated his special eyes and asked.
"Did you personally enter Moliken Forest on the day you discovered the incident?"
"Yes." Alaric didn’t show any nervousness whatsoever. Through his body posture and his tone of voice, one might think that he was a bystander.
"Did you encounter armed individuals there?" Ronan stuck to his serious expression. If this whole thing turned out to be true, the royal family would have a massive mess on their hands.
Ulyt kingdom infiltrating the Flenn Kingdom was no small matter. It would be much easier to handle if House Orlen turned out to be lying.
"Yes." Unfortunately, Alaric didn’t care about the royal family.
"Did you order the hunting squad to recover the corpses afterward?"
"Yes."
His special eyes didn’t react even once.
Ronan gradually moved toward more important questions.
"Did you deliberately prevent the hunting squad from seeing the faces of those corpses?"
"Yes. I don’t trust my own people either. I didn’t want anyone tampering with them after learning their identities."
Again, there was no reaction.
Ronan and a few representatives narrowed their eyes. Everyone had the same thought in their mind.
Truly a ruthless individual. He didn’t even trust his own people. Everyone would have a headache to have such a paranoid and ruthless person as their enemy.
The questions continued getting closer to the actual point, and the atmosphere inside the room gradually changed.
Even House Yuglev had remained relatively calm after the Divine Inspectors became involved because they had been waiting for exactly this stage.
There was a reason Divine Inspectors were feared throughout the Flenn Kingdom and why the Royal Family placed so many restrictions on when they could use their special eyes.
There was no known defense against their ability to detect deliberate lies.
Once a Divine Inspector asked a question, there were normally only two possible outcomes. Either you told the truth, or you lied and immediately got caught.
There was no third option.
That undeniable fact was exactly why Alaric had dared to construct his entire plan around deceiving them.
If everyone in the kingdom believed that Divine Inspectors couldn’t possibly be fooled, then once he successfully fooled one, those same people would defend the result themselves.
Ronan finally asked the question everyone had been waiting for.
"Did you swap the corpses?"
The main question which had been on everyone’s mind since the moment Alaric gave the grand speech on the Central Square of Orlena City was finally out in the open.
Alaric felt his heartbeat thump heavily.
Finally! It is here.
He had already withdrawn the four Seals of Mind from the System storage earlier. It would be stupid if they failed to activate in there.
For several seconds, the room seemed unusually silent to Alaric. Every ducal representative was watching him, while Ronan’s special eyes remained fixed directly on his face.
This was the final gamble.
If the Seal of Mind failed, everything Alaric had done over the past several days would collapse right here.
The young man looked directly into Ronan’s eyes.
"No. I did not swap the corpses."
It was as if time inside the room had been stopped. Everyone held their breaths. There was pin drop silence.
One second...two seconds...three seconds...
The special eyes didn’t react.
Yes. The famed special eyes of the feared Divine Inspectors known throughout the entire Flenn Kingdom which could always detect lies did not, in fact, react.
Ronan’s expression froze.
For a moment, even the ducal representatives didn’t seem to understand what had happened. Then their carefully controlled expressions finally cracked one after another.
Disbelief appeared first, followed quickly by confusion. Finally, complete panic began sitting in their hands.
The representatives felt their hands trembling. Their lips quivered and eyes struggled to even see straight.
Ronan himself stared at Alaric as if wondering whether he had somehow missed the reaction from his own special eyes.
But there had been nothing.
If Alaric had switched the corpses, those words should have been a deliberate lie.
His special eyes should have reacted.
Since they hadn’t...
Was everything actually true?
Had soldiers from the Ulyt Kingdom really infiltrated House Orlen’s territory?
One of the ducal representatives abruptly stood up.
"No. That can’t be true."
His composure had visibly disappeared as he pointed toward Alaric.
"You’re lying!"
Alaric immediately frowned.
Ronan stared at him for another moment before asking, "Young Lord Alaric, answer the question once more. Did you swap those corpses?"
This time, Alaric didn’t immediately answer.
He first turned toward the ducal representative who had accused him.
"Have you forgotten who you’re speaking to?"
The representative’s face stiffened.
Alaric continued with obvious displeasure. "I agreed to cooperate with an investigation. I did not agree to be treated like a prisoner who has already been declared guilty."
He gestured toward Ronan.
"A Divine Inspector is sitting right in front of me. His special eyes haven’t reacted even once, yet because you don’t like the result, you point at me and call me a liar?"
The representative glared at him, but there wasn’t much he could say.
After all, Ronan’s special eyes were precisely why they were all here.
In fact, Alaric was currently panicking inwardly.
Answering that question had consumed two Seals of Mind! Yes! Two! Not one like he had thought!
Alaric felt immensely relieved that he had bought three more Seals of Mind from the System shop without caring about the cost back then. Else he would’ve truly been fucked right now.
Only two intact Seals of Mind were present in the pocket of his robe right now. Two had cracked.
If I answer that goddamn question again I won’t have anything left for backup at all.
However, the investigation went better than I thought. I only had to use the Seal of Mind on one question.
At this point, there should be no more questions but I can’t let my guard down.
Alaric finally turned back toward the Divine Inspector.
"I am the Young Lord of House Orlen. I am not a goddamn dog of the royal family.
"My house has been defending the southwestern border alone and have also killed the Ulyt Infiltrators.
"And all we get in return is investigations and fingers pointed at us?
"Is this how the crown treats those who accrue merit? Who defend the border? Who find and kill the infiltrators?"
At that angry rebuke, even Ronan found himself with no words.
Alaric had laid out everything on the table so clearly, coupled with the fact that his special eyes hadn’t reacted to Alaric’s answer, proving that everything had been true, Ronan could only sigh.
House Orlen had really been treated badly.
He didn’t have the heart to ask Alaric to answer his question again.
*****
At the southwestern border, another Divine Inspector stood before a different group of corpses.
Obviously there weren’t fifteen Squires and a Knight in this group of corpses as well, that would be a very blatant coincidence. Alaric had told Zephyr to destroy some corpses on the way there.
After examining them for a long time, he finally let out a sigh.
"All of them possess deep connections to House Yuglev’s territory."
Marchioness Orlen, standing nearby, barely reacted.
That same day, a piece of news spread throughout the Flenn Kingdom at terrifying speed.
The Divine Inspectors had completed their investigations.
The corpses recovered inside House Orlen’s territory were genuinely connected to the Ulyt Kingdom.
The Young Lord Alaric had not switched them.
His outrageous public claim had been true.
And at the southwestern border, another group of corpses had revealed deep connections to House Yuglev.
Marquis Yuglev had just finished reading the newest report inside his study.
CRACK!
The cup in his hand shattered.
Tea flowed between his fingers, but the Marquis didn’t even look down.
For the first time since this entire incident began, his expression had completely lost its calm.
He muttered in distress.
"Trouble is coming for House Yuglev."
