CRACK!

The broken pieces of the cup fell onto the table.

Keon Yuglev, the eldest son of Marquis Krugar Yuglev, stared at the report in his hands with an increasingly pale expression.

"Father...what do we do?"

Unlike his son, Krugar had already regained his composure.

He leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

There were several ways House Yuglev could respond, but every single one of them led to trouble.

If they claimed that the corpses found at the southwestern border did not belong to House Yuglev, the Divine Inspector could simply examine their lifelong connections again.

That would expose the lie immediately.

If Krugar claimed that those men had never been under the orders of House Yuglev, that would also be a lie.

He had personally approved sending them into House Orlen’s territory.

Of course, he hadn’t ordered them to appear at the southwestern border and facilitate infiltration from the Ulyt Kingdom.

That part was genuinely beyond his knowledge.

Krugar wasn’t afraid of standing in front of a Divine Inspector because he had nothing to hide regarding that matter.

He could truthfully say that he had never ordered those men to cooperate with the Ulyt Kingdom.

The problem was that it wouldn’t solve anything.

Keon clearly came to the same conclusion as he asked anxiously, "Can we accuse Alaric of moving the corpses?"

Krugar opened his eyes and glanced at his son.

"And how would we explain why we know those corpses originally belonged elsewhere?"

Keon froze.

To accuse Alaric of moving the bodies, House Yuglev would first have to admit that the people belonging to them had entered another noble house’s territory without permission.

That alone was an extremely serious matter.

Worse yet, Alaric had already passed questioning under the special eyes of a Divine Inspector.

If House Yuglev still accused him without evidence, they would only look desperate.

Keon clenched his fists.

"Then we stay silent?"

Krugar’s expression darkened.

"That is also bad."

If House Yuglev remained silent, the theory already spreading across the kingdom would continue growing.

People with deep connections to the Ulyt Kingdom had appeared inside House Orlen’s territory.

House Orlen was closer to the south western border than the other borders of the kingdom.

Meanwhile, people with deep connections to House Yuglev had appeared at the southwestern border.

Alaric had accused that House Yuglev had cooperated with Ulyt.

Krugar knew that conclusion was false.

Unfortunately, politics didn’t only care about the truth. It cared about what could be proven. And right now, House Yuglev couldn’t prove those people weren’t theirs.

Krugar rubbed his forehead.

"Prepare ourselves for punishment."

Keon stared at him.

"Father!"

"We won’t be declared traitors."

Krugar’s voice remained calm.

"The Crown has no proof that we knowingly cooperated with the Ulyt Kingdom. But someone must take responsibility for this incident, and House Orlen has already been cleared."

His eyes turned cold.

"That leaves us."

Back in House Orlen’s mansion, Alaric finally entered his room and closed the door behind him.

The moment he did, he let out a long breath.

"It’s finally over."

For the first time in several days, there was no immediate problem waiting to explode in his face.

House Orlen’s territory inspection was progressing well.

The treasury inspection had no major problems either.

The Divine Inspector had confirmed that Alaric hadn’t lied.

The armies of the royal family and several ducal houses had already begun mobilizing toward the southwestern border.

At this point, House Orlen’s elevation to a duchy was practically guaranteed.

More importantly, Marchioness Orlen would finally be able to return.

Alaric dropped onto a chair.

Fuck me. I actually did it.

Those had been his two biggest goals from the beginning.

Help House Orlen, and bring his mother back from the border.

Now he could finally focus more seriously on his own growth.

The Academy would be established soon.

Before then, he wanted to become stronger, find more Geniuses, make Evan and Zephyr complete more quests, and also help both of them grow.

The stronger his connected Geniuses became, the better it was for him anyway.

Alaric suddenly remembered another matter and chuckled.

Good thing nobody asked about the equipment.

When the hunting squad had cleaned out the temporary settlement used by the original Knight and fifteen Squires, they had recovered supplies, weapons and various ordinary items.

Alaric had later asked a merchant to identify where those goods might have come from.

That merchant had concluded that most of them could be conveniently obtained through Yuglev’s trade markets.

If Ronan had begun investigating those objects in detail, Alaric had explanations prepared.

But since they didn’t ask for those items, Alaric didn’t remind them either.

Why make life difficult for himself?

Alaric had even sent the merchant away with his caravan afterward, instructing him to continue his normal trade activities in another territory.

It would be stupid of him if people involved in sensitive matters remain conveniently available for questioning.

Before sleeping, Alaric contacted Ryu.

"How are the promotional stages progressing?"

Ryu’s reply arrived shortly afterward.

"The territory assessment is nearly complete, Young Lord. The treasury assessment is also proceeding smoothly. After both reports are submitted, the Crown will formally review the promotion."

Alaric smiled.

It’s as I thought. The promotional stages are progressing without a hitch.

He put away the communication device and finally lay down.

He couldn’t even remember how long it had been since he had properly slept.

Being a Squire gave him endurance far beyond an ordinary person, but it didn’t eliminate the need for sleep.

Within minutes, he was unconscious.

While Alaric slept, however, the kingdom remained very much awake.

Messages moved between noble houses.

Emergency meetings were held. The Crown issued statements.

House Yuglev wasn’t declared a traitorous house, because there was no proof that Krugar had intentionally cooperated with the Ulyt Kingdom.

But punishment still came.

Several privileges were temporarily suspended. Their political influence at court was reduced.

A formal investigation into their military personnel and internal command structure was ordered.

By the time the night settled, the political layout of the Flenn Kingdom had already shifted.

House Orlen had risen.

House Yuglev had fallen.

And the person responsible for starting the entire mess was sleeping peacefully through all of it.
