Alaric stared at the System notifications in front of him for a good few seconds. Then he even read them again just to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating.

This was the second time regarding his System that he was seeing things not mentioned in the first volume of Tales of Golden Era.

Naturally, the first time was with Alice. Where the System declared her as a Special Entity.

His eyes moved from Zephyr’s Divine Ability reaching Rank C, to the thirteen Talent Points, then to the words special power system, then Combat Simulation, then finally to Mira somehow becoming eligible to connect with the System.

He went back to the beginning and read everything for the third time.

What?

Alaric genuinely couldn’t process what the fuck had happened during a simple flight back to House Orlen.

Zephyr had found Mira’s brother in the morning. That was it. There had been no dangerous ruin, no ancient inheritance, no mysterious treasure and no opportunity Alaric knew from Tales of Golden Era.

The baby dragon found Velan, got caught by a random Paragon Knight, argued with him, then brought Mira back.

Somewhere in the middle of that sequence of events, Zephyr’s Divine Ability advanced an entire rank and Mira awakened a power system Alaric had never even heard of.

Dragon Rider?

His gaze settled on the notification again.

[Detected a special power system]

[Dragon Rider - Mira Hawthorne]

Alaric looked outside the window.

Mira was literally sitting on Zephyr’s back.

The answer was right there and somehow that made the entire thing feel even more absurd.

She rode a dragon and became a fucking Dragon Rider?

Obviously, Alaric knew it couldn’t possibly be that simple. If sitting on a dragon was enough, every rich lunatic in history would’ve spent their wealth trying to catch one and sit on its back.

Something else had happened.

Whatever that something was, the System had just rewarded him thirteen Talent Points and unlocked an entirely new function because of it.

Alaric almost laughed.

I sent Zephyr to find one missing family member. How the hell did just a way back to my mansion give me more shit than the actual quest?

He was still trying to digest everything when something happened which made him laugh.

The dragon had forgotten to go invisible.

The dragon had taken a secluded route on his way here, and coupled with the fact that it was flying up in the air so high, very few people might’ve seen him.

But that wasn’t the case when one reached House Orlen’s mansion. It was quite populated.

Even if one normally didn’t look at the sky, if a creature the size of a carriage were to appear, everyone would notice.

The baby dragon hurriedly flew back, disappearing from Alaric’s vision.

A few minutes later, Alaric heard footsteps outside his study while a gust of air displaced around the window and, an invisible weight descended on his shoulder.

After that, he closed the window and pulled the curtains, making it so that no one could look inside his study.

"Young Lord?"

Mira’s voice came from outside.

"Come in."

The door opened and Mira entered.

Alaric immediately noticed how exhausted the young girl looked.

Her eyes were still somewhat red after everything that had happened with Velan, while her expression carried the distant look of someone whose brain was somewhere else entirely.

Zephyr had cancelled his invisibility after Alaric pulled the curtains, and he didn’t seem to be faring any better either.

The baby dragon hopped from his shoulder onto one of the chairs and immediately sprawled across it.

Alaric raised an eyebrow.

"You look like shit."

"I’ve been invisible for a long time, and I also flew for hours."

"You’re a dragon."

"That doesn’t mean flying doesn’t take energy, weak human. Exhaustion comes with power. You have no power. You wouldn’t know anyway."

Alaric had a speechless look on his face.

What the fuck kind of phrase is that? What all has this dragon been learning?

Alaric ignored him and looked toward Mira, who had remained standing silently.

"Sit down. You don’t need permission to sit every time you’re in here. You seem to have gotten Zephyr’s trust. You’re one of my people now.

"Naturally, I’ll prepare a Divine Contract Scroll later. Don’t expose Zephyr’s existence."

Mira nodded absentmindedly and carefully took the chair beside Zephyr.

For a few seconds she didn’t say anything.

Then she rubbed her forehead.

"Young Lord... something happened when we were coming back."

Alaric immediately became attentive. He was very much interested! Those rewards were no joke!

"What happened?"

"I don’t really know how to explain it."

Mira looked genuinely confused as she tried putting what she was experiencing into words.

"When we were flying, I suddenly started feeling strange. At first I thought it was because I was tired, but then there were things inside my head that weren’t there before."

"Things?"

"Memories, I think."

Alaric’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Mira continued.

"I know some kind of breathing technique now. I don’t remember anyone teaching it to me, but when I think about it, I know how I’m supposed to breathe, how I’m supposed to move mana and what I’m supposed to do while training."

She paused before adding uncertainly.

"There are other things too, but they’re all mixed together right now. I know the words Dragon Rider for some reason.

"I also know they’re supposed to mean something about me and Zephyr, but when I try thinking about everything at once, my head starts hurting."

The baby dragon’s head shot up with a confused expression when he heard the word ’Dragon Rider’. He seemed to have heard those words in his bloodline memory inheritance as well.

It seemed he would have to go through those memories again.

Alaric almost leaned forward immediately and started questioning her.

Almost.

Then he stopped himself.

The girl had just found her little brother after believing he might have been lost forever, reunited with him, cried her eyes out, willingly separated from him again and then apparently had the laws of the fucking world shove a new power system into her brain on the flight home.

Interrogating her right now could wait.

"Don’t force yourself to understand it."

Mira looked at him.

"There isn’t any rush. Get some sleep first. When you’ve rested and those memories are clearer, tell me everything you know."

"But Young Lord, isn’t this important?"

"Very. Which is why I don’t want you giving me half understood information while your head feels like someone hit it with a hammer."

Mira considered that and eventually nodded.

Alaric then glanced at Zephyr.

"You too. Rest."

The baby dragon immediately protested.

"I don’t need rest."

"You just told me flying takes energy."

"I’m a dragon."

What in absolute fuck is wrong with your brain?

Alaric genuinely couldn’t be bothered with the baby dragon anymore. He only looked at both of them and announced.

"I have a pretty big surprise for the two of you."

Zephyr immediately jumped down from the chair.

"What surprise?"

"Later."

"What do you mean later?"

"Exactly what the word means."

"Tell me now."

"No."

Zephyr stared at him.

Alaric stared back.

The baby dragon finally turned around with an annoyed snort.

Mira, on the other hand, looked genuinely curious but didn’t ask again.

Alaric smiled when he saw their expressions.

The dragon didn’t seem to know what had happened to his Divine Ability, and even if Mira had received some memories, there was still a chance that they might not have covered everything.

What if she didn’t even know who she was?

He would explain the new changes to both of them after had rested enough.

"Go eat something, then sleep. I’ll call both of you later."

Mira stood up.

Zephyr still looked annoyed that his surprise had been delayed, but eventually followed her out after turning invisible.

Once the door closed, Alaric immediately returned to the System.

His attention first went toward Zephyr’s Divine Ability.

[Divine Ability Concept - Freedom]

[Rank - C]

[Functions]

[1. Invisibility]

[2. Defiance]

Alaric read the information regarding the newly awakened function.

[When the user’s freedom is forcibly restricted, physical strength, mana output, and the effectiveness of abilities used to resist that restriction are temporarily increased. The effect scales with the severity of the restriction.]

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Holy shit.

Zephyr was finally influenced to include some power in his concept of freedom huh?

That incident with Celdric must’ve played a big part in this.

Zephyr had believed that hiding meant freedom because someone who couldn’t find him couldn’t capture him.

But then a Paragon had casually caught him while he was invisible. Add to that Mira and Valen’s experience with not having any freedom to choose their future due to being powerless, Zephyr’s concept of freedom now included power as well rather than just hiding.

Alaric could already imagine the lines of thought which caused Zephyr to advance his Divine Ability.

If previously, Zephyr’s thought was - If they can’t find me, they can’t capture me. Therefore, I am free.

Then now, it would be - I wasn’t wrong. Hiding is still freedom.

I just need to be strong enough to beat up anyone who finds me.

Alaric chuckled at the childish interpretation, but was happy nonetheless. It was a genius connected to his System that was growing after all!

When Zephyr first awakened his Divine Ability, Alaric had wondered why the System separated the Concept from its Function.

Now he had an answer.

The direction in which a Divine Ability develops its functions depends on how its owner understands the concept?

Alaric shelved that thought, and moved on to the next topic.

System, what exactly is the Dragon Rider power system?

Information began flowing into his mind, and the first part was already explosive enough.

[Dragon Rider]

[Classification: Special Power System]

[Dragon Rider is the first rank of the Dragon Rider Path.]

Alaric’s eyes widened. He remembered Mira’s quest!

The quest given to Mira hadn’t said anything about reaching Dragon Rider.

It said: [Quest: Reach the peak of Dragon Rider stage]

"Holy fuck." Alaric muttered.

Mira had skipped the equivalent of Squire and Mage Apprentice entirely!

She had awakened directly as a first rank practitioner! He now had two first ranks under him! Three if one counted Grok! And four considering that Evan was guaranteed to become one soon!

His influence had grown so much without him realising.

Alaric also noticed that the signature names of the power system paths were usually the first ranks.

Knight.

Mage.

Dragon Rider.

All were at the first rank of their power system.

A Squire wasn’t considered a true first rank practitioner of the Body Path. Only after strengthening one’s body and forming mana channels would one become a Knight and reach the first rank.

Similarly, Mage Apprentice was merely the preparatory stage of the Magic Path. Forming a mana core and becoming a Mage represented the first rank.

Then came Champion Knight and Champion Mage at the second rank, followed by Paragon Knight and Paragon Mage.

Just then, more information continued entering his mind.
