Evan changed his grip and attacked again.

Alaric moved away from the sword’s edge, strengthened his arm with mana and used another knife to redirect the attack.

His mana control still carried the roughness of someone who had broken through that same day, but his physical strength more than compensated for it.

More troublesome than his strength were his reflexes, which gave Evan yet another shock, who thought this was the extent of Young Lord’s strength.

Evan’s sword moved faster whenever he increased the mana flowing through his arm, yet Alaric continued reacting correctly.

The Young Lord always avoided attacks which needed to be avoided, deflected those which limited his movement and never allowed his body to commit too far toward one response.

The two fought through dozens of exchanges.

Evan used his Minor Mastery of the sword to maintain a narrow advantage at close distance, while Alaric relied upon his greater strength and monstrous reflexes to prevent Evan’s advantage from deciding the fight.

Through the fight, Alaric also realised that his minor mastery in throwing knives was indeed more suitable for killing and ambushes instead of sparring and close combat.

If he weren’t for his unusual strength and monstrous strength, minor mastery in throwing knives alone wouldn’t have allowed him to win this fight, resulting in a loss in the hands of Evan.

After a few exchanges, Evan saw an opening and thrust his sword toward Alaric’s shoulder.

Alaric turned his body aside, allowing the sword to pass beside him, then used the brief opportunity to throw the knife held in his other hand.

The Starsteel knife passed beside Evan’s neck and struck the wall behind him.

Evan had seen it leave Alaric’s hand. He had even understood that he needed to move, but his body couldn’t carry out the response before the knife passed him.

At that moment, Evan understood what had happened.

Alaric had deliberately missed. In a real fight, with the accuracy the young lord had displayed, he would’ve surely hit the neck, resulting in his death.

Evan lowered his sword after a moment and returned it to its sheath. There was no need for either of them to say who had won.

He looked at Alaric with disbelief which he couldn’t completely hide.

Evan had already considered his own talent terrifying, but the Young Lord was even more absurd.

For some reason, Evan felt that the existence before him felt mightier than ever.

This existence possessed Minor Mastery in throwing knives, strength beyond an ordinary newly advanced Knight and batshit insane reflexes which allowed him to survive against someone with a minor mastery in swords at close distance.

Staying in House Orlen was definitely the correct decision.

Evan thought in relief once again.

The nobles outside already thought Alaric was a monster pretending to be helpless, and they didn’t even know the full truth. Evan couldn’t imagine what they would think if they witnessed this fight.

Alaric was also going through the fight inside his head, though his attention remained on the usefulness of the Reflex Calibration Serum.

At the Knight realm, every movement happened so quickly that knowing the correct response was useless if his body carried it out too late.

After the fight, they had a small talk where Alaric took out a Divine Contract Scroll to forbid Evan from revealing details of this fight to anyone.

Once Evan left, Alaric took a break to have his meal and update himself with the matters of the House Orlen.

Some of which included the assigned tasks to Grok and the mining operation going on to excavate mana crystals from the mine Alaric found. Both were proceeding without any issues.

Later that evening, Alaric delivered Grok’s regular session with the Mana Compression Pearl.

The Mage sat before the concealed mechanism and channelled mana through one tube, while Alaric controlled the Pearl from the other side and returned only part of the compressed mana.

When the session ended, Grok thanked him sincerely.

Alaric dismissed the gratitude by saying that they were only exchanging benefits, then waited until the Mage had left before looking at the mana remaining inside the Pearl.

Calling this an exchange of benefits is quite generous when I’m taking most of the benefit.

Part of what he had taken from Grok was about to become free progress for the baby dragon.

Alaric found Zephyr waking from a short nap and brought him into the same room, but he didn’t reveal the Mana Compression Pearl. The treasure was far too valuable for that, even if he currently trusted Zephyr.

The baby dragon sat on the prepared chair and placed his claws against the tubes after Alaric explained how to use the mechanism. Compressed mana soon flowed toward him, causing his sleepy golden eyes to brighten.

For an average Mage, reaching the Champion Mage realm could take around fifty years, and that was only possible if they dedicated most of their time to breathing techniques.

Such a thing was unrealistic because Mages had research, work and numerous other responsibilities.

This was why resources were important, especially for those with average talent.

A genius could reduce the required time through talent, while an ordinary Mage needed every useful resource they could obtain.

As Zephyr happily absorbed the free progress toward Champion Mage, a System notification appeared in Alaric’s mind.

[Quest: Sustain two Body Techniques together for ten breaths — Zephyr Nightscale]

[Reward: Minor Mastery in Mana Control]

Another Minor Mastery! Finally! And this is something I need badly right now, and will also help me for a long time!

Alaric’s attention was stuck upon the reward for a long time before he reluctantly withdrew his focus, and looked toward the baby dragon.

"You should begin practising how to use two body techniques together. Start with ten breaths."

Zephyr’s pleased expression disappeared. "No. I like magic."

"And? You need to learn other things too." Alaric tried convincing him, but the baby dragon was having none of that.

"I only learnt body techniques because they were inside my bloodline memories, not because I liked them.

"Hell, the only reason I even became a Knight was because those people kept forcing me to become stronger so they could take better blood from me. I don’t want to waste my time practising the Body Path."

Alaric sighed in exasperation.

Others long to reach the Knight realm and spend their lives searching for methods and resources for that and here you are, saying you were forced into the Knight realm against your will as if it was poison.

He then thought for a moment before looking toward the concealed Pearl.

"What if I give you more sessions with this resource?"

Zephyr remained silent for several seconds. "How many more?"

"Complete the training first, and then we’ll discuss how many you deserve."

The baby dragon was clearly unhappy with that answer, but the compressed mana had already destroyed most of his determination to refuse.

This was a very valuable resource! And as someone who was more devoted to Magic Path, this held an even greater attraction to him!

Once the session ended, Alaric called a servant and instructed him to bring Mira to his study. He then looked toward Zephyr and told him to come along.

It was time to explain to these kids what he knew about the Dragon Rider Path and also the newly advanced Divine Ability.
