Alaric’s eyes widened before he could stop them. He tried to keep the horror from showing on his face, but Rowena had been watching him carefully from the moment she spoke and caught every change in his expression.

Neither of them said anything for several seconds. Rowena then activated the privacy formation surrounding the study before speaking in a calmer voice.

"You don’t need to be frightened. I have no intention of harming you or forcing you out of that body."

That assurance didn’t calm Alaric as much as she probably intended. If she could recognise that his soul came from another world, then he had no idea what else she knew.

"Before I explain anything, have you noticed someone unusual around you?" Rowena continued watching him as she spoke.

"Someone who should be extremely strong, yet is currently weak. You could also describe it as someone who seems to have regressed from a level of strength they once possessed."

Alaric’s heart skipped a beat and his breath caught for a moment as Alice appeared in his mind for some reason.

Rowena noticed the small reaction, but she didn’t press him for an answer. "Don’t be alarmed, and you don’t need to tell me who they are if you don’t want to.

"I am only advising you to keep that person around and avoid becoming their enemy. Recruiting them and earning their loyalty might even be the best thing you could do."

"How strong were they?" Alaric asked carefully.

Is there a chance that Alice’s Forced Narrative is not a Divine Ability but some kind of power she had at a higher level?

If this is indeed her regressed strength, then my previous hypothesis about her ability being the reason Tales of Golden Era existed seems to be much more plausible.

"The three empires, including the Rathen Empire possess individuals who have advanced beyond the Paragon realm, while the numerous kingdoms around these empires together have a large number of Paragons.

"As far as I know, even if all of them joined forces, they might not be able to defeat the smallest finger of that person’s past true form."

Alaric stared at her as the meaning slowly settled inside his mind.

Holy fucking shit. There are existences above the Paragon realm, and even all three empires and the numerous kingdoms together couldn’t defeat one pinky finger?

While he was still trying to understand how absurd that was, Rowena leaned back in her chair and released a long breath.

She looked strangely comforted by his reaction.

Alaric had far too many questions, but there was one which mattered more than the rest. "If you know that I occupied this body, aren’t you worried about what happened to your son?"

"No, because my son never existed." Rowena gave the answer so casually that Alaric wondered whether he had heard her correctly.

"What do you mean he never existed? I have his memories, this body grew up inside House Orlen and everyone knows that I’m your son."

"Did you never find it strange that I don’t have a known partner?"

Alaric frowned at the seemingly unrelated question. "I assumed you kept his identity hidden to separate your personal matters from House Orlen."

"That is what most people assumed, but if I cared so much about keeping my personal life hidden, I would have hidden the child as well. There was no reason to announce my son to the entire kingdom while concealing only his father."

"A son would still need to be recognised publicly if he was going to become your legal heir." Alaric argued.

Rowena raised an eyebrow at him. "That argument would matter only if I intended to die anytime soon."

Alaric had no response to that.

So the previous young lord never really existed at all?

However, Rowena continued explaining as if she hadn’t just denied the existence of the person whose entire life he had in his memories.

"I never had a partner, and I never gave birth to a son. Your current body was an empty shell prepared for a different purpose. It possessed no soul, but the body itself was alive and capable of growing like an ordinary person."

Rowena continued explaining that she had controlled it through a spell model which allowed her to provide it with thoughts, habits and enough awareness to pass as a normal human.

Those thoughts and experiences left impressions inside the brain, which were what Alaric now recognised as the memories of the body’s previous owner.

Alaric looked down at his own hands.

The person whose memories he had inherited, whose terrible reputation he had been repairing and whose future death he had avoided had never possessed a soul in the first place.

"Why would you do something like this?" Alaric finally asked. "And how did you even create a body capable of growing like a normal human?"

"It is connected to the Fall of Hundred Paragons. Since you met Orwin Vale, I assume he told you about the incident."

Alaric was utterly baffled why this would be connected to that incident, but he still replied.

"He only told me the name of the incident, and that you were injured badly enough that you could only display the strength of a Champion Knight afterward, and that the people who pursued you all disappeared."

"All of that is true, but it leaves out almost everything important." The Marchioness nodded.

She remained silent for a moment as she considered where to begin.

"Twenty years ago, a pillar of light suddenly rose from the wilderness outside the Rathen Empire. Then, a strange aura spread from that place, and it was powerful enough to be sensed across an enormous distance.

"Everyone who sensed the aura reached the same conclusion. A treasure or inheritance of unimaginable value had awakened, and whoever obtained it might receive an opportunity that would never appear again.

"The Paragons who were nearby arrived first. They came from all three empires, and more continued arriving until nearly a hundred of them had gathered around a cave like structure which hadn’t existed before that day.

"That...was the beginning of the calamity."
