The heart devil laughed, disregarding Zhi Wuzhong’s provocations. He’d never had any intention of just tolerating things anyway!
“You think a mere heart devil is nothing to be afraid of, huh?” The heart devil shook his sleeves, put his hands behind his back, leaned forward, and leered. “Then let’s fight and see.”
As his voice rang out, countless sword gashes appeared throughout heaven and earth.
It was as if countless swords had struck in unison, chopping the firmament.
Everything Lonely Heights had sealed off cracked and split.
The River of Destiny had been separated by turbulent spacetime, but now, it broke free of its strange, frozen state. Its waters surged once more in a boundless flow, rumbling without end.
Everyone watched in shock and horror. They could clearly sense the ambient power of the Laws of Destiny.
The Heavenly Sovereigns got off relatively lightly, but the experts of the Far Shore of Destiny looked stricken.
Here on the River of Destiny, they feared nothing more than a backlash or the natural order!
Earlier, Lonely Heights sealed off the entire area, removing the need for caution. Things were different now. The heart devil had blasted through the seal on the area, exposing every last one of them to the natural order of destiny!
Zhi Wuzhong had obviously guessed what the heart devil was up to, and he couldn’t help but be stunned. Isn’t this a bit... overly frenzied?
Lonely Heights’ expression darkened. “You might be able to threaten us like this, but the experts of Sword Sovereign City will be doomed, too!”
He scanned the dome of heaven. “If we fight here, the natural order of the River of Destiny will erupt, producing an unpredictable but severe tribulation. When that happens, every living thing on the River of Destiny, all of its territories, and the entirety of its natural order will feel the impact. Can you truly bear the consequences of that?"
His voice resounded throughout the area, sending chills down countless spines.
Those from the Far Shore of Destiny knew this was no mere joke!
A backlash from the Laws of Destiny was a terrifying thing. It was enough to threaten even them.
If existences on the level of Lonely Heights and the Big Boss of Sword Sovereign City fought with no regard for the consequences, the resulting cataclysm would be severe beyond imagination!
The heart devil smiled, eyes narrowing into slits. “I’m just a heart devil. What do I care if there’s a cataclysm? Even if the River of Destiny runs dry and every last living thing in it dies, how is that any of my business?”
He glanced at the other Sword Sovereign City cultivators. “Are you afraid to die?”
All of them shook their heads. Throughout the ages, no cultivator of Sword Sovereign City had ever been a coward.
The heart devil nodded in satisfaction, then looked at Lonely Heights. “And what about you? Are you afraid to die?”
Lonely Heights glowered. “It isn’t a question of whether or not I’m afraid!”
The heart devil said flatly, “Fight me, then!”
He took a step forward, raised his palm, and swung at Lonely Heights’ face.
The air collapsed, plunging the whole world into an apocalyptic tribulation visible to the naked eye. The ambient power of the natural order of destiny was provoked, and it condensed into bolt after bolt of tribulation lightning.
The onlookers’ scalps tingled with fright. All of them sensed an impending lethal threat.
Lonely Heights bellowed, then swung his jade ruler.
Boom—!
The collapsing stretch of heaven and earth was promptly sealed once more, the natural order of destiny firmly trapped on the other side of the barrier. The impending cataclysm faded away.
But the heart devil’s slap landed squarely on Lonely Heights, making him stagger backward!
It didn’t reach his face, but that tyrannical power made him stagger on his feet. He looked downright wretched!
“If you aren’t afraid, why seal the surrounding area?” The heart devil laughed. “Don’t even try to tell me you’re concerned for the well-being of the masses or that you can’t bear to see the River of Destiny destroyed!”
The entire area fell silent. The atmosphere was incomparably oppressive.
Everyone understood what the heart devil was trying to do. It was just suicidal! He wanted to drag everyone here to the grave with him, and he didn’t care in the slightest what kind of cataclysm he invited. Worst-case scenario, he might destroy every last living thing on the River of Destiny, but he... didn’t care!
This was undeniably frenzied.
It was so insane that even Zhi Wuzhong paused his endless snacking to grimace. He... really is different from before!
“Can’t you act like a proper sword cultivator!?” Lonely Height glowered. “Since when was the Big Boss of Sword Sovereign City such a hooligan? Had I acted like this, both your reincarnation and your surviving followers would be dead already!”
It would have been obvious to anyone that he was enraged.
The heart devil said calmly, “As you yourself said, I’m... no more than a heart devil. If you’ve got the balls, kill me, and every member of Sword Sovereign City, and my reincarnation, too. See if I so much as furrow my brow!”
Before his voice had even finished echoing through the air, he attacked once more. The surrounding stretch of heaven and earth collapsed, as if the entire world had instantly been overturned. That terrifying, calamitous power of the Grand Dao appeared once more.
Even the boundless, coursing River of Destiny manifested one apocalyptic vision after another. It seemed a cataclysm was brewing in its waters!
Countless river denizens quivered with fright.
Meanwhile, dense, calamitous power filled the skies over the thirty-three continents, four seas, five celestial capitals, and six pure lands of the Eternal Heavens Domain.
The Laws of the Eternal Heavens Domain seemed provoked. All of them were plunged into upheaval.
Everyone beneath the heavens was startled. It was as if an apocalypse were imminent!
As unbelievable as it seemed, it was really happening.
Now, Su Yi and the Heavenly Sovereigns finally sensed on a visceral level how terrifying it was when power beyond the bounds of Eternity appeared on the River of Destiny.
At the same time, the experts of the Far Shore of Destiny were only now grasping why the Big Boss of Sword Sovereign City was considered a supreme expert.
This was just his heart devil, yet he was this unreasonably strong. How much stronger must his true body have been?
Lonely Heights once more intervened just in the nick of time, like a repairman restoring the barrier separating the battlefield from the outside world.
Only then did he sever the building cataclysm, but the upheaval remained. It was as if dark clouds were hanging overhead, and the storm might begin at any moment.
Everyone was startled, bewildered, and uncertain.
Finally, Zhi Wuzhong couldn’t help but interject, “Daoist Brother, if you go on like this, I’m afraid you’ll invite the most taboo tribulation of destiny. Why not take a moment to cool down, then talk things over? Let’s find another way to resolve this.”
Zhi Wuzhong then looked at Lonely Heights. “Don’t you agree, you old charlatan? If things keep going like this, we’ll all be finished."
Lonely Heights glowered, then forcefully suppressed his fury. “I’m willing to negotiate, but that madman must stop first!”
The other experts of the Far Shore had complicated looks on their faces.
Who could have failed to realize that Lonely Heights was taking a step back? He didn’t want to face the Big Boss’s heart devil after he’d thrown all caution to the wind.
But against all expectations, the heart devil just chuckled and ignored Lonely Heights completely. Instead, he pointed to Zhi Wuzhong and growled, “So, Zhi Wuzhu, you’re afraid, too? If you know what’s good for you, just stand back and watch. It won’t be too late to talk after I’ve vented my anger!”
His voice had only just rung out when a swath of sword qi whooshed forth, sweeping through the sky.
That apocalyptic vision returned, even more terrifying than before. The waters of the River of Destiny boiled, and the ambient power of the Laws descended into explosive turmoil.
Lonely Heights practically jumped up and down with fury. That madman... sure is going all out!
But no matter how frustrated he felt, he had no choice but to intervene.
The Big Boss of Sword Sovereign City was dead. All that remained of him was his heart devil.
Lonely Heights could disregard the lives of the denizens of the River of Destiny and its associated territories, but he couldn’t disregard the lives of his subordinates. Nor was he willing to aim for mutual destruction. He still wanted to seek out the Origins of Destiny and grasp the ultimate mysteries of the primordial chaos before that storm befell the Far Shore of Destiny. He naturally wasn’t willing to die just yet.
Boom!
Lonely Heights took out a purple and gold talisman, which transformed into a layer of purple and gold clouds and blanketed heaven and earth, sealing and suppressing the collapsing landscape.
The heart devil stretched out his hand and made a grabbing motion. The sky was thrown into upheaval, and a streak of sword qi flew forth. Its sheer sword force shook the purple and gold clouds before it even landed. And when it actually reached the clouds, they split and collapsed on impact.
This strike was far too terrifying.
The heart devil then took a step forward, robes billowing around him, and swung his sword at Lonely Heights again and again and again.
Lonely Heights blocked with all his might, but at the same time, he had to keep the collapsing landscape under control. He was forced back repeatedly, looking utterly wretched. He was on the verge of losing it from sheer frustration.
For a moment, he felt the impulse to cast aside his reservations and fight the heart devil with all his might. But in the end, he resisted.
He was unwilling to accept this, but he had reservations. He couldn’t act as freely as the heart devil. But that was exactly why he was so angry and frustrated.
The Big Boss wasn’t acting like the man he remembered. He’d become an utterly despicable hooligan!
Zhi Wuzhong shook his head and sighed between mouthfuls of sunflower seeds.
He couldn’t stop this, nor could he change anything. At most... he could wait and see, then react accordingly. There was nothing else he could do.
To the denizens of the River of Destiny and the inhabitants of the Eternal Heavens Domain, this was a day of darkness, terror, and despair.
That calamitous aura surged forth, then receded, only to arise again. It was enough to make someone have a mental breakdown.
Especially since only those here knew that the source of all of this was a battle taking place over the River of Destiny.
It was just one duel, but it was affecting everything on the River of Destiny!
Lonely Heights was struggling to do two things at once. Little time passed before he was injured and forced back.
His Daoist robes had been ripped open, and he now sported a startling, bloody wound. Blood gushed from his torn flesh.
His followers looked on in astonishment, their hearts quivering in their chests.
