Beneath the dome of heaven, the black-robed, white-haired old man shut his mouth and said nothing. A threat? Who’d dare to threaten the Big Boss’s heart devil?

The heart devil pointed at Su Yi. “Relax. For his sake, I won’t break the rules.”

The white-haired old man glowered, then looked at the Heavenly Sovereigns. “You can leave.”

“Many thanks!” The Heavenly Sovereigns clasped their fists in greeting, then turned to leave.

The heart devil made no attempt to stop them. He just smiled and said, “They’re a rare set of whetstones. There’s no denying that without the forces of the Far Shore in play, they’re indeed the supreme, invincible rulers of the River of Destiny.”

Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan didn’t leave with the others. He still stood there, his expression conflicted. Yes, but after seeing the power of the experts of the Far Shore, which Heavenly Sovereign would dare proclaim himself invincible?

“Swordsman, it’s time you fulfilled your promise,” said the white-haired old man.

The heart devil said with displeasure, “Quit pushing! Can’t you let me say goodbye properly?”

Goodbye? Su Yi’s heart shook. “You’re leaving?”

The heart devil’s gaze contained a hint of grief. “No banquet lasts forever. If I stay by your side, I’ll only fetter your Grand Dao. It’s best that I leave.”

He sounded wistful and forlorn.

Su Yi forcefully calmed himself, then asked, “Where are you going?”

The heart devil gestured to the six Secluded Ones. “I’m going into seclusion with them.”

Su Yi nodded. “Take care of yourself.”

The heart devil blinked, then looked at Su Yi. Even after examining him closely, he saw no sign of grief or sorrow. He couldn’t help but stamp his feet and sigh. “You know I’m leaving. Aren’t you at all reluctant to part with me? Have you no conscience?”

Su Yi laughed. “I know you’ll be fine, so what’s there to mourn? Leaving my side and clearing your head will likely be good for you.”

The heart devil was instantly amused. He patted Su Yi on the shoulder. “You really do understand me!”

He then transmitted, “Hold onto that sheath. If your life is in danger, you can use the secret power of the heart to refine it. I guarantee it’ll help you avert catastrophe!”

Su Yi nodded.

The heart devil then smiled and looked at Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan, who stiffened, heart tense, and forced himself to smile. “What can I do for you, Senior?”

The heart devil laughed. “Any interest in cultivating in Sword Sovereign City one day?”

Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan was stunned, to the point that he suspected his ears were playing tricks on him. His heart swelled with emotion, and he felt uncharacteristically flustered. As a Heavenly Sovereign, he was naturally keenly aware of how rare and precious an opportunity to cultivate in Sword Sovereign City was.

Su Yi said irritably, “Sword Sovereign City hasn’t existed in a long time. Don’t you think your offer is overly insincere?”

The heart devil threw back his head and laughed. “So long as we live, Sword Sovereign City remains. Our legacy is unbroken. Sword cultivators shall exist in perpetuity!”

His voice boomed throughout heaven and earth, as valiant as could be.

“If you don’t believe me, ask the Secluded Ones. Sword Sovereign City has been destroyed, but who among them would dare to proclaim that it’s gone for good?”

The heart devil suddenly seemed utterly tyrannical, as if he could devour the ages and look down on all of creation.

The six Secluded Ones stood beneath the dome of heaven. They had complicated looks on their faces, but none of them said anything. They couldn’t deny it.

So long as anyone from Sword Sovereign City drew breath, and so long as their legacies were passed on... Sword Sovereign City was not yet destroyed!

“Let’s go.” The heart devil stepped into the air, robes swaying around him, like a rising black wave, too dashing for words.

“After you!” The six Secluded Ones joined forces to open a spacetime portal.

The heart devil turned to look at Su Yi, his smile warm and friendly. Then, he looked away, the first to pass through the spacetime portal.

Six Secluded Ones left shortly after. As soon as they’d left, the portal split into a rain of light and dissipated.

Soon, only Su Yi and Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan were left. The River of Destiny flowed beneath them.

The waves washed away all heroes. Right and wrong and victory and defeat all came to naught!

A wave of loneliness and melancholy assailed Su Yi’s heart. Not even he had anticipated that the Struggle for Heavenly Fate would develop in such a way.

He wasn’t sure how his first incarnation’s heart devil had gone about negotiating with the six Secluded Ones, but he knew that there was no way the heart devil would have chosen to leave with them if he’d had any other option.

That aside, although it seemed like the heart devil had seized the upper hand in the battle following the Struggle for Heavenly Fate, the Heavenly Sovereigns yet lived, and the experts of the Far Shore had received an opportunity to go to the Source of the River of Destiny!

Lonely Heights, Yun Wuxiang, Mo Zhong, Chang Ning, and even the “juniors” like Yu Xiu, Bo Yunjun, and Liu Wutian were all proceeding to the source of the River of Destiny!

Admittedly, the experts of Sword Sovereign City had received the same opportunity.

Admittedly, Su Yi had survived this brush with death, and he wouldn’t need to worry about the forces of the Far Shore for the time being.

Admittedly, he’d taken first place in the Struggle for Heavenly Fate and acquired all of the fragments of the Yitian Eternal Throne.

But... did that really mean he’d won?

It didn’t! He hadn’t won at all.

All of this had ended in compromise.

Su Yi wasn’t actually that concerned with victory and defeat, or with his gains and losses. Going into this, he’d thought it would be enough so long as he left the Struggle for Heavenly Fate alive. He hadn’t even thought about how many enemies he’d kill, or whether or not he’d win.

He was melancholic for one simple reason. Once all those variables arose, precious few were at all under his control. For the most part, all he could do was watch and listen passively. There was no room for him to act! Su Yi didn’t like that feeling at all.

Going forward, I won’t have my first incarnation’s heart devil on hand. That’s likely a good thing for my cultivation, thought Su Yi. I’ll have nothing to rely on but myself and my sword!

“Fellow Daoist Su.” River Ancestor Shen Xiao, River Ancestor Lu Shu, Star Toad, and the others approached from the River of Destiny

Su Yi smiled and greeted them, then said, “Brother Ku Xuan, if you’ve got the free time, why not come with me and lie low in the River of Destiny for a while?”

Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan mulled it over briefly, then straightforwardly agreed. He knew that if he returned to the Eternal Heavens Domain now, it was highly likely that something unexpected would happen along the way, like... the other Heavenly Sovereigns intercepting him! Su Yi had obviously invited him along to help him avert this catastrophe.

The group soon set course for River Empress Peacock’s Five-Colored Hidden Realm.

There was no one left to be found on the surface of the River of Destiny. Even the Struggle for Heavenly Fate’s arena had been destroyed during the earlier battle. Anyone who came here now would find no evidence of it at all.

Time slipped by.

A full four hours later, a group shot over from afar. These were none other than Young Sovereign Ling Wenxuan and Yan Xiaosheng, among several others. During the battle, their respective Heavenly Sovereigns had put them away for safety. They’d thus avoided the aftermath of the battle. But now, here they were again.

“There’s no one here.”

“It seems Su Yi realized that he’d be doomed if he returned to the Eternal Heavens Domain. He must have sought refuge in the River of Destiny.”

“Come on, let’s go report this.”

The group arrived in a hurry, then left just as quickly.

An hour later, all of them had reported back to their Heavenly Sovereigns.

The Heavenly Sovereigns had planned to wait for their prey to come to them. Had Su Yi or Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan dared to return to the Eternal Heavens Domain, they’d have struck to kill immediately. But now, their plans had come to naught!

“I refuse to believe that Su Yi can hide in the River of Destiny for the rest of his life!” Heavenly Sovereign Wen said coldly.

A moment later, his tone shifted. “Everyone, what happened today is of the utmost importance. If you aren’t opposed, I hope you can come with me to Limitless Palace to discuss the matter further.”

The other Heavenly Sovereigns pondered briefly, then accepted the offer. It was true; the Struggle for Heavenly Fate was over, but the resulting variables were sure to affect the entire Eternal Heavens Domain! They naturally had to come up with countermeasures.

......

The Heavenly Sovereigns worked together to seal off all word of the proceedings. The people of the Eternal Heavens Domain just knew about the strange “apocalyptic tribulation” that had come close to erupting; they didn’t know what had caused it. Rumors circulated the world, but none contained the full truth. Only the Heavenly Sovereign factions knew how much was really behind that “apocalyptic tribulation!”

Divine Reverence Pavilion.

“The Big Boss’s heart devil sure is something. I cannot help but admire him.” Ruo Su sighed.

She’d just listened to the Qiongqi Mountain Lord’s report on the Struggle for Heavenly Fate.

The Qiongqi Mountain Lord said with shame, “Your subordinate was inept. I lament that I couldn’t help His Excellency Su.”

The Qiongqi Mountain Lord had been watching the Struggle for Heavenly Fate in secret. The arrival of Lonely Heights and Zhi Wuzhong, two supreme experts, made his heart sink into the pit of his stomach. It was then that he realized how much trouble this really was.

At the time, he planned to shatter a jade pendant, transmit a full, detailed report to Ruo Su, then fight to the bitter end to save Su Yi.

Against all expectations, the heart devil of the Big Boss of Sword Sovereign City intervened at a critical juncture. It was for this reason that the Qiongqi Mountain Lord had sighed in relief and decided against taking any reckless action.

“You couldn’t have done anything. It’s enough that your heart was in the right place,” Ruo Su said casually. “According to your report, that swordsman’s heart devil has reached some sort of agreement with the Secluded Ones, but I’m curious. What exactly did they agree to?”

Ruo Su had only just said this when something occurred to her. A soft “ee?” escaped her lips as she rose, then vanished into thin air. A moment later, she reappeared outside Divine Reverence Pavilion, beneath the dome of heaven.

There, she saw a thin old man in Daoist robes approach through the clouds.

When he saw Ruo Su, he stopped in the distance and clasped his fist. “They call this old man Gouchen. Greetings, Fellow Daoist.”

Ruo Su’s eyes flashed. She said calmly, “Old Lord Gouchen of the Four Heavenly Ministers?”
