One was tall, upright, and dressed in blue. The other was stalwart and imposing in his gray robes.
These were none other than Su Yi and River Ancestor Lu Shu.
“Strange. Why is it just the two of them?” the Ape Ancestor transmitted from his hiding spot amidst the floating mountains. “Should we attack?”
They’d planned to catch Su Yi, River Ancestor Lu Shu, and River Ancestor Shen Xiao all at once, but now, it seemed the situation had changed.
“Su Yi has already shown himself. No need to concern yourself with the rest. Let’s attack immediately and finish them off!” said River Ancestor Ji Dian, his eyes flashing with murderous intent.
“That works too!” River Ancestors Sparrow and Bai Mang agreed.
But just as they were about to take action, Su Yi’s voice emanated from afar. “Where are the four dirty beasts who injured River Ancestor Shen Xiao?”
His voice boomed throughout the surrounding waters.
Dirty beasts? The four River Ancestors were instantly furious. That Immeasurable Realm whelp sure is aggressive!
“Back me up, everyone!” River Ancestor Ji Dian was the first to lose patience. He shifted through the air and charged right into the fray.
Boom!
The surrounding waters boiled, and countless currents swept forth. The monstrous majesty of a River Ancestor emanated from River Ancestor Ji Dian’s body.
His armor clattered as ring after ring of blood-red markings of the Laws rippled from his majestic frame.
He arrived in a flash, then swung his palm at Su Yi.
Terrifying blood-red fist force spread out like a net, shattering the skies and enveloping the surrounding hundred thousand feet of water.
But someone was even faster than River Ancestor Ji Dian.
Silver light exploded into being, like a sharp edge piercing time and space. It hurtled straight for River Ancestor Lu Shu. River Ancestor Lu Shu’s gaze focused, and he swung his fist.
Boom!
Their clash went off like a thunderclap. A destructive aura swept outward from the point of impact, and the descending silver light was forced back.
River Ancestor Sparrow came back into view, his eyes full of shock. It seemed he hadn’t anticipated that River Ancestor Lu Shu would be able to react to such a sudden attack, much less force him back.
But then, he laughed. He hadn’t killed Lu Shu, but he’d bought River Ancestor Ji Dian enough time to envelop Su Yi in that enormous blood-red net!
The net glowed with arcs of blood-red lightning. They repeatedly interwove, forming layer after layer around Su Yi.
“Close!” River Ancestor Ji Dian bellowed, drew his hand through the air, and pulled the rapidly constricting net toward him.
It all happened in one smooth sequence, over in a single breath, so quick it seemed unbelievable.
The Ape Ancestor and River Ancestor Bai Mang paused, stunned. It seemed they hadn’t anticipated things would go so smoothly.
River Ancestor Ji Dian threw back his head and laughed. “Hahaha! The fish is in the net. Everyone, go ahead and fight freely!”
Before his voice had even finished echoing through the air, a calm voice rang out. “Don’t you think you’re celebrating prematurely?”
River Ancestor Ji Dian instinctively looked down, only to watch the blood-red net split with an audible bang.
Meanwhile, an unfathomably deep ruin appeared in River Ancestor Ji Dian’s field of view. Laws of the Grand Dao flickered like lightning throughout its vast, seemingly endless expanse.
“That’s...” River Ancestor Ji Dian’s heart shook. That inscrutable aura is like the punishment of destiny itself. I can’t even imagine it. How could it be so terrifying?
The aura emanating from it made even his true name quiver uncontrollably.
True names represented river denizens’ foundations in the Grand Dao. When a River Ancestor’s true name quivered, it was unquestionable proof that they were in peril.
Practically instinctively, River Ancestor Ji Dian retreated. He dared not hesitate.
Moreover, he used the escape technique he typically kept in reserve, his whole body erupting with blood-red light.
But just as he was about to flee, a voice like a Buddhist chanting sutras emanated from the depths of that mysterious ruin.
“You haven’t surrendered yet, you dirty beast?”
Every word went off like a thunderclap shaking the nine heavens. Its unsurpassed power slammed ruthlessly into River Ancestor Li Dian’s heart.
He felt a rending pain in his soul, his heart was on the verge of collapse, and his qi circulation stagnated.
Practically simultaneously, a large hand shot out of the mysterious giant ruin. Each of its fingers was like a pillar supporting the heavens, shrouded in inscrutable, terrifying, calamitous Laws.
A whirlpool of endless, calamitous power manifested over the hand’s palm, unleashing endlessly terrifying power as it reached for River Ancestor Ji Dian.
“Shit!” River Ancestor Ji Dian panicked, his soul practically leaving his body for sheer horror. However, that Buddhist chant had intimidated his heart, soul, and vital energy, slowing his reactions. He could only watch helplessly as the hand seized him.
Boom!
A moment later, the hand pulled him into the mysterious ruin, which then vanished completely.
All that remained was Su Yi, standing tall and upright in his original location.
All of this took some time to describe, but it happened in the blink of an eye.
River Ancestor Ji Dian’s companions’ smiles froze in place, their eyes widening with astonishment. What’s going on?
River Ancestor Ji Dian’s smug laughter still echoed through the air, yet he’d vanished into thin air.
Even River Ancestor Lu Shu couldn’t help but gasp.
In the River of Destiny, River Ancestors were as mighty as Heavenly Sovereigns in the Eternal Heavens Domain. When they fought among themselves, they could sometimes defeat their opponents, but killing each other was extraordinarily difficult.
And capturing their opponent alive was even harder!
River Ancestor Lu Shu was confident that he could have suppressed River Ancestor Ji Dian if he went all out, but there was no way he could have captured him alive.
Yet now, Su Yi had done just that!
“Who’s next?” asked Su Yi.
His body was covered in startling, bloody gashes left there when the blood-red net constricted around him. Fortunately, none of these wounds were serious.
The reason was simple: River Ancestor Ji Dian had been trying to capture him alive, not kill him.
It was this that gave Su Yi a chance to counterattack.
Earlier, he took out the Book of Destiny, broke the blood-red net, and had the Monarch of Endless Tribulations and Buddha of Non-Existence work together to suppress River Ancestor Ji Dian and imprison him in the Divine Punishment Destiny Ruin in the first page of the Book of Destiny.
There was no denying that River Ancestor Ji Dian was an incomparably dangerous opponent. A moment’s incaution could have led to doom.
But it was because his strength made him complacent that Su Yi seized an opportunity and caught him off guard.
“The Book of Destiny! He has the Book of Destiny! He... He’s Destiny’s Chosen!?” cried the Ape Ancestor.
The Book of Destiny!? River Ancestors Sparrow and Bai Mang looked stricken.
As River Ancestors of the River of Destiny, they were keenly aware of how taboo and terrifying the Book of Destiny was. Naturally, they understood that Destiny’s Chosen could decide the life and death of every last denizen of the river.
This discovery made their hearts shake. It was entirely unexpected. They’d had no idea that their target controlled the Book of Destiny!
There was no doubt about it. The book was the source of River Ancestor Ji Dian’s misfortune!
“Who... Who exactly are you?” asked River Ancestor Bai Mang, her young, innocent face full of bewilderment. Her colorful dress shifted amidst the current, a reflection of her shifting mental state.
The Ape Ancestor’s gaze was locked onto Su Yi. The Book of Destiny! This is no longer a simple matter of capturing helpless prey alive.
“The Heavenly Sovereigns didn’t tell you about me?” said Su Yi. “That’s rather unkind of them.”
River Ancestor Bai Mang’s eyes flashed. “It seems you know we’re working with other people. Why not seize this opportunity to have ourselves a nice chat? That way, we can prevent any further misunderstandings.”
The Ape Ancestor chimed in, “That’s right. We have no deep bond with the Heavenly Sovereigns, and they didn’t tell us that you were Destiny’s Chosen. It’s really... just too dishonest!”
His expression was dark, and he was obviously furious. He felt he’d been tricked, but in truth, the Heavenly Sovereigns still didn’t know that Su Yi had the Book of Destiny.
“That’s right. We have immense respect for Destiny’s Chosen. We would never have acted against you had we known,” said River Ancestor Sparrow, nodding repeatedly.
As he spoke, he silently shifted, returning to his companions’ side.
“We have nothing to discuss.” Su Yi shook his head slightly. “I cannot let everything River Ancestor Shen Xiao suffered go unavenged. That is... unless the three of you submit immediately. Refuse, and this won’t end until one side is dead!”
Submit? The three River Ancestors’ expressions darkened.
Had Su Yi said this before revealing the Book of Destiny, they’d have attacked and suppressed him without hesitation.
But now, they dared not act recklessly. They’d only just witnessed River Ancestor Ji Dian’s misfortune, and River Ancestor Lu Shu was eyeing them hungrily. Under the circumstances, how could they attack recklessly?
But as cautious as they were, they weren’t afraid. After all, they’d set death traps all over the surrounding area.
That meant they could attack and retreat freely!
“Please, calm down,” said the Ape Ancestor. “We can say with certainty that this was all one big misunderstanding. If you let River Ancestor Ji Dian go, we swear we’ll leave immediately, and we won’t make any further trouble for you!”
Su Yi said calmly, “I said it already. Submit, or die. Take your pick!”
His voice was like the clanging of a sword, firm and unyielding.
The three River Ancestors were instantly furious. The Ape Ancestor glowered. “Do you really think we’re afraid of you?”
River Ancestor Sparrow said coldly, “I refuse to believe that an Immeasurable Realm cultivator like you is truly Destiny’s Chosen!”
“That’s right. A true Destiny’s Chosen could squish us like ants and decide the life and death of every denizen of the river at whim. If you were really Destiny's Chosen, you would never have gotten hurt suppressing River Ancestor Ji Dian!” said River Ancestor Bai Mang, her gaze sweeping pointedly across Su Yi’s numerous bloody wounds.
Su Yi could tell that they were trying to probe him, but he couldn’t be bothered to argue. “Daoist Brother, no need to hide any further. Let’s attack together and crush those three dirty beasts!”
“Got it!” River Ancestor Lu Shu nodded, his eyes flashing like cold lightning as his aura expanded around him.
The three River Ancestors’ eyelids twitched. They instantly understood. River Ancestor Lu Shu was obviously holding back earlier!
But before they could say anything, River Ancestor Lu Shu took a step forward and attacked. His terrifying murderous intent locked onto all three of them at once.
Meanwhile, Su Yi hefted the Book of Destiny and charged at the Ape Ancestor.
