Chapter 112: Chapter 112
"Mommy, I’m hungry."
Lane glanced at the rearview mirror when she heard Calvin’s little voice.
After the helicopter landed, a car was already waiting for them.
Ethan must have pulled some strings, because someone just handed him the keys and let him take the wheel. He was driving them straight to the house where she’d spent the last five years.
Before she could say a word, Ethan beat her to it.
"Where do you want to eat, Calvin?" Ethan asked.
"Can we go to McDonald’s, Daddy? I want spaghetti and chicken!" Calvin cheered.
"You got it," Ethan replied instantly.
Lane caught the smile on Ethan’s face when he heard Calvin’s excited "Yehey!"
When they spotted the fast-food joint, Ethan steered the car into the lot. He hopped out and rushed to open her door, then did the same for Calvin in the back, helping the little guy out of his seat.
He didn’t let go of their son’s hand, and he kept a steady, protective hand on the small of her back as he guided them inside.
Since it was still early, the place wasn’t packed yet, so they managed to snag a good table. Ethan made sure they were settled in before taking the seat across from them.
"What are you doing?" Lane asked a moment later. She watched as Ethan raised his hand, trying to flag down a staff member like he was at a five-star bistro.
He looked at her, his brows knitting together. "Ordering," he said simply.
She bit her lip, trying to hold back a smirk, but she couldn’t help it. A soft laugh escaped her lips.
He stared at her, totally confused. "What’s so funny, Lane?"
"This is your first time eating here, isn’t it?" she teased.
He gave a slow nod. No wonder he didn’t realize you had to stand in line to get your food.
She started wondering how he’d handled her fast-food cravings back when she was pregnant. Maybe he’d sent an assistant or just used the drive-thru.
"This isn’t fine dining, Ethan. It’s fast food. You actually have to stand in line over there," she said, pointing toward the counter.
"I’ll go handle it. Just stay here and watch Calvin."
Ethan stood up before she could even move. "Just sit tight, Lane. I’ll do it."
"You even know how to order?" she challenged.
He frowned at the question. "I’ll just ask them." He turned to go, but only made it two steps before coming back.
"I forgot to ask what you wanted. What are you having?"
She gave him her order. "And a coffee," she added.
"Got it. I’ll be right back."
Lane watched his broad back as he walked toward the counter. She couldn’t help but smile.
There was something so warm about seeing a man like him doing something so simple for them. It was the little things that really showed how much he cared.
It didn’t take long for him to finish at the counter. Soon, he was back at the table with a tray full of food.
"I have to go back for the rest," he said. He hadn’t even bothered asking the staff to help him carry it.
"You should sit down and take a breather, Ethan," she told him when he finally sat for good.
He nodded, but she noticed beads of sweat on his forehead. It looked like the stress of ordering fast food had actually made him break a sweat. Lane hid a smile.
She pulled a handkerchief out of her bag and stood up, walking over to him. He raised an eyebrow, his eyes following her every move.
"What’s up, Lane?"
Instead of answering, she reached out and gently wiped the sweat from his forehead. Ethan froze at her touch, his expression softening instantly as he looked up at her.
"You’re sweating," she whispered, finishing the job. As she started to pull her hand away, he caught her wrist.
Lane’s breath hitched when Ethan brought her hand to his lips and kissed the back of it.
"Thank you, love," he said, his voice dripping with affection.
She quickly pulled her hand back, noticing a few other customers checking them out. She could hear the whispers from the nearby tables and felt her face go up in flames.
"That guy is so sweet to his wife."
"I wish you acted like that."
"I am sweet to you, babe!"
Lane cleared her throat and scurried back to her seat.
"Mommy, I’m sweaty too," Calvin piped up after a minute. "Wipe me too!"
Ethan let out a laugh, and Lane pouted at him. She wiped the imaginary sweat off her son’s forehead, knowing he just wanted the same treatment his dad got.
But the imitation didn’t stop there. Calvin reached out, grabbed her hand, and kissed the back of it just like Ethan had.
"Thank you, love," the kid chirped.
"You are way too much like your Daddy," she sighed.
"Well, he is my son, Lane," Ethan cut in. "And we both love you."
A huge smile spread across her face. Even if she wasn’t some blushing teenager anymore, she still felt totally giddy.
"Alright, let’s eat. You two are just ganging up on me now."
"We’re not ganging up on you. We just love you a lot. Right, son?"
"Yeah, Daddy! I love Mommy so much."
"I know, I know," she said softly, her heart full.
"I was just teasing."
"That’s the goal, Lane. We want you to know exactly how much we love you."
She looked at Ethan. He wasn’t joking anymore. His eyes were serious and full of devotion.
She smiled back, and his gaze softened. They dove into the food, and Lane spent most of the time cleaning up Calvin, who was getting spaghetti sauce practically everywhere.
She decided to just let him finish before doing a final deep-clean of his face.
Once they were done, they rested for a bit before Ethan suggested they hit the road.
"Are we getting close?" Ethan asked as they drove through the familiar streets.
"Almost there," she replied.
"Turn right at that corner." Ethan followed her lead until their old house came into view.
"There it is."
"This is where you lived?" Ethan asked, staring at the house.
"Yeah," she said, unbuckling her seatbelt. She didn’t wait for him to play chauffeur this time.
She hopped out on her own.
Ethan handled Calvin instead. "I’ll grab the bags. You go on ahead," he told her.
She nodded and took Calvin’s hand, walking toward the gate. They were halfway through the yard when a familiar voice stopped her in her tracks.
"Lane?"
She looked over the fence and saw Troy, their neighbor. He was one of the guys who had been pretty persistent about courting her back in the day.
"Oh, hey, Troy," she said.
He grinned and walked closer to the waist-high fence. "I thought you’d never come back. I missed you."
She was about to respond when a voice boomed from behind her.
"Love."
She turned and saw Ethan standing there, his brows slammed together in a dark glare. He’d clearly heard every word Troy said.
He stepped up beside her, possessively wrapping an arm around her waist and hauling her close. He stared Troy down with a look that could kill.
Lane noticed Troy looking back and forth between her and the hulking man at her side.
She cleared her throat awkwardly.
"Ethan, this is Troy, our neighbor. Troy, this is Ethan." She hesitated on the title.
"Her husband," Ethan cut in, introducing himself with zero hesitation.
"Uncle Troy, this is my Daddy, Ethan!" Calvin added, sounding incredibly proud.
"I... I see that, Calvin. You’re the spitting image of him," Troy stammered.
"Damn right he is. He’s my son," Ethan said, doubling down.
Lane gave a little fake cough. "Anyway... Troy, we’re gonna head inside now, okay?"
Troy just nodded. As she led Ethan toward the door, she noticed he was still shooting daggers at Troy over his shoulder.
But the real kicker came the second they stepped inside.
"Daddy, you know what?" Calvin said. "Uncle Troy used to court Mommy.
He told me if Mommy said yes, he’d be my new Daddy."
Lane froze. She slowly turned to look at Ethan. His eyebrows were pinched so tight they practically formed a single line.
