Chapter 120: Chapter 120
After Lane finished cooking, she set the table for dinner with Calvin. Once the table was ready, she left the kitchen to find Calvin in the living room.
She saw him sitting on the sofa, and when she followed his gaze, she saw he was looking at the door as if he were expecting someone.
Lane knew exactly who Calvin was waiting for.
His daddy.
"Calvin," she said to get his attention.
Calvin looked away from the door and turned to her.
She smiled when their eyes met.
"What’s up, Mommy?" he asked.
"Dinner is ready, Calvin," she told him. "Come on. Let’s eat."
She noticed him blinking repeatedly. Instead of getting off the sofa to come to her, he glanced again at the door.
"We’re going to eat, but Daddy’s not here yet, Mommy?" Calvin asked. "If we eat and he gets home, he’ll be all alone."
Lane stepped closer to her son and sat beside him.
"Your daddy can’t come home, Calvin," she said. "Tyler is still in the hospital."
Earlier, Ethan had called to say he couldn’t come home yet, but he promised to be back tomorrow to be with them.
"When will Daddy come home?" he asked.
"He said he’ll come home tomorrow," she replied. "So come on, or the food might get cold. It’s your favorite."
Fortunately, she managed to convince her son to eat even though his daddy wasn’t with them.
Lane carried her son to the kitchen and placed him in his chair. They were soon busy eating, and she occasionally fed him because she noticed he seemed down.
"Mommy, I’m just going to go sit on the sofa," he said after they finished.
Lane nodded. "Okay. Once I’m done cleaning up, I’ll follow you."
Calvin’s sadness was evident as he silently walked out of the kitchen.
Lane cleaned up after their meal so she could join him. She knew her son needed someone to talk to, and she needed to help him feel better about his daddy’s absence.
When she finished, she went back to the living room. It felt like her heart was being squeezed when she saw Calvin still looking at the door.
Even though she told him his father couldn’t come home, he still seemed to hope the door would open and he would see his daddy.
"Calvin," she said.
"Yes, Mommy?"
"Do you want us to call your daddy?"
"Won’t we disturb him, Mommy?"
"Of course not," she replied.
"Your daddy told me that if you want to talk to him, we should just call. No matter how busy he is, he will always answer our call. Your daddy really loves us."
She noticed the sparkle in Calvin’s eyes at what she said. "Really, Mommy?"
She nodded with a smile. "Yes, of course."
"Okay, Mommy. Let’s call Daddy," Calvin replied.
She picked up the phone from the coffee table and called Ethan.
Ethan’s number just kept ringing. After a while, she couldn’t help but let her lips part when the ringing stopped as if the call had been canceled.
Ethan stood up quickly from his seat when he saw Tyler move. The child had been asleep for quite a while.
"M-mommy," he heard Tyler call for Olivia a moment later, and he started to cry when no one approached him. The woman was in the bathroom at that moment.
Before Tyler’s crying could get louder, Ethan quickly approached.
"Tyler."
Tyler looked at him when he heard his voice. "D-Daddy?" he called out. When Tyler confirmed that it was him, his crying intensified.
"Daddy."
Ethan immediately sat on the edge of the bed. "Sssh, Daddy is here, Tyler," he said.
"Don’t cry." He raised a hand to wipe the tears from Tyler’s eyes.
"Are you okay, Tyler? Does anything hurt?"
Tyler nodded.
"Where does it hurt?" Ethan asked.
"Here, and here, Daddy," Tyler replied, pointing to his head and stomach.
Ethan couldn’t help but feel guilty about what happened. He was the reason Tyler was in the hospital, and why he drank spoiled milk just to get his attention. In his desire to make it up to Calvin, he had neglected Tyler.
"I’m sorry, son," Ethan apologized.
"I’m sorry if you rarely get to be with Daddy. But even so, don’t ever think that I don’t love you. I love you so much."
Tyler sniffled. "Do you really love me, Daddy?"
Ethan nodded. "Of course. Don’t do that again, okay? Don’t drink spoiled milk just to see and be with me again."
"Daddy, I didn’t—"
"Tyler!"
Tyler was interrupted when the bathroom door opened and Olivia came out.
She quickly approached him. "Are you okay, son? Does anything hurt?" she asked in a worried voice.
Ethan stood up to make way for Olivia.
"Just my head and stomach, Mommy," Tyler replied.
"You’ll feel better, son, especially now that Daddy is here," Olivia replied.
"But my stomach still hurts, Mommy," Tyler said with a whimper.
"I’ll call a doctor," Ethan said, causing the mother and child to look up at him.
"Daddy, please stay here," Tyler said.
"Let Mommy be the one to call the doctor."
Ethan was about to speak when Olivia interrupted. "Your Daddy will call the doctor, Tyler. I don’t want to leave you here."
"I’ll just be a moment, Tyler. I’ll be right back."
When Tyler nodded, Ethan stepped out of the private room.
Ethan had already stepped out when he remembered that he had left his cellphone inside. He didn’t go back for it since he would return once he had called the doctor.
After making the call, Ethan returned to the room.
Shortly after, Ethan frowned when he saw the door open and a man being pushed out by Olivia.
"Don’t—"
Olivia didn’t finish what she was about to say when she caught sight of him. He noticed the surprise in her expression and a hint of anxiety in her eyes, but his attention was drawn to the man in front of Olivia.
Ethan’s frown deepened. He felt like he had seen the man before but couldn’t remember where.
Ethan’s expression didn’t change as he stepped closer. "What’s going on here?" he asked.
Olivia cleared her throat, trying to compose herself. "He entered the wrong room," she answered.
Ethan looked at the man. His eyebrows almost knitted together when he noticed the man staring at him.
"Yeah," the man said. "I thought I was in my child’s room. It was a mistake."
...
"Mommy?"
Lane paused while dressing her son when she heard him call her.
"Hmm?"
"I thought you said daddy was coming home?"
he asked as their eyes met. Lane was momentarily speechless when she heard that question.
"You told me he was coming home today, but why isn’t he here yet?" he asked before she could answer.
"Because Daddy is still busy, Calvin," Lane replied.
Last night, she had called Ethan so Calvin could talk to him, hoping it would ease the sadness he felt since he missed his daddy. But she was surprised when Ethan didn’t answer.
She didn’t want to overthink it because she didn’t want to repeat what happened before when she jumped to conclusions.
Maybe Ethan’s phone ran out of battery or he lost signal. It was unlike Ethan to cancel her call. Even if he were in an important meeting, he would answer her immediately.
Even if he were in a life-or-death situation, he would still answer.
But a few hours later, he called her back, wanting to talk to Calvin, but Calvin was already asleep. He just told her he would call again in the morning.
"Is he with Tyler, Mommy?"
Lane opened and closed her mouth. She didn’t know how to answer that. She was afraid that if she said he was with Tyler, it would make him even sadder. She was about to speak when her cellphone rang.
She looked at the device on the bedside table. She picked it up and smiled when she saw Ethan’s name on the screen.
"Your daddy is calling," she said.
She noticed the twinkle in Calvin’s eyes when he heard her. She answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Lane," he said. "How are you all doing there?"
"We’re okay," she replied. "I just finished dressing Calvin, he’s ready for school."
"Can I talk to him?"
Lane nodded even though Ethan couldn’t see her. "Okay," she replied. Then she handed the cellphone to her son. "Calvin, your daddy wants to talk to you."
Calvin immediately took the phone and put it to his right ear. "Daddy?"
She let them talk. She stood up to arrange Calvin’s bag. She couldn’t hear Ethan, but she could hear Calvin.
"I waited for you, but you didn’t come home last night, Daddy," Calvin said, and she noticed the hint of disappointment in his voice.
She didn’t hear anything from Calvin for a moment, as he was listening to the person on the other end, but she noticed him nodding and saw the sparkle return to his eyes.
"Really, Daddy? You’re going to pick me up from school later?"
"Okay, Daddy. I’ll wait for you at school. I love you." Afterwards, Calvin looked at her. "Mommy, Daddy wants to talk to you."
She approached and took the cellphone. "Hello?"
"Lane, please take care of Calvin for now, okay? I’ll be the one to pick him up later. Then we’ll pick you up from the office and eat out," he said.
"Okay," she replied.
"And take care, both of you," he reminded her.
"I will," she replied. A while later, he said goodbye.
"I love you, love."
A smile appeared on her lips when she heard him say that.
"I love you," she replied before ending the call.
After she finished, she glanced at her son and couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow when she saw that the sadness was gone from his expression.
"Looks like my Calvin is happy now, huh?" she commented.
"I’m getting jealous. It seems you love your daddy more than me," she added.
Lane smiled when Calvin suddenly hugged her. "Mommy, you know I love you very much too," he said.
Smiling, she returned the hug. "I was joking, sweetie. I know you love me. But I love you more. Always remember that, okay?" Lane said tenderly.
....
"Ethan."
Ethan turned away from Tyler when he heard Olivia’s voice.
"Let’s eat," she said when their eyes met.
He saw food set on the table.
"I’m full," Ethan replied, making her smile fade. He glanced at Tyler. "How about you, Tyler? Are you hungry?" he asked his son.
He nodded. "Yes, Daddy," he replied. "But can you feed me, Daddy?"
"Of course," he replied. He stood up from beside his son to get some rice.
"Are you sure you’re not going to eat, Ethan?" Olivia asked as he approached. "You haven’t eaten yet."
"I’ll just eat outside," he replied, not looking at her. He missed the change in her expression.
He didn’t want to fill up because he had promised to take his family out for dinner later.
Olivia didn’t say anything more.
After getting food for his son, he returned to the hospital bed.
Ethan was busy feeding his son when he was interrupted by a knock on the door. Soon after, it opened, and Uncle Lucas and Aunt Rebecca entered.
Ethan immediately noticed Uncle Lucas’s weight loss and the dark circles around his eyes. He looked like he hadn’t been sleeping well.
He noticed Uncle Lucas’s furrowed brows when he entered the private room. But when Uncle Lucas looked at him, his face brightened.
"You’re here, Ethan," Uncle Lucas said.
Before he could respond, Tyler chimed in. "Of course, Grandpa. My dad loves me, so he’s watching over me," he replied. Then he looked at Ethan.
"Isn’t that right, Dad? You love me?"
Ethan smiled at his son. "Of course, Tyler," he replied. He continued feeding him.
After he finished, Aunt Rebecca approached to check on her grandchild.
"Your parents, Ethan? Have they visited yet?" he heard Uncle Lucas ask a little later.
"They were here this morning," he replied. His parents had visited early to check on Tyler.
They brought the food Olivia served and fresh fruit for Tyler.
They stayed for a few hours before leaving but promised to return later that night.
His son’s test results were fine. He just needed to stay in the hospital to recover his strength.
A little later, Ethan frowned when Uncle Lucas brought up business.
"Can we not talk about the business here, Uncle Lucas?" he said, noticing the smile disappear from his uncle’s face.
Ethan didn’t want to discuss it because they were in a hospital. It didn’t seem like the appropriate place.
It seemed Aunt Rebecca noticed the tension between her husband and him, so she changed the topic.
An hour later, they said their goodbyes. He checked his watch and saw it was almost noon. He went to the bathroom.
When he came out, he saw Olivia sitting next to their child, seemingly saying something to him.
He noticed the surprise in her eyes, but with a blink, it was gone.
She stood up from the edge of the bed when she saw him approaching.
"Tyler, son, Daddy’s leaving now, okay?" he said as he got closer.
"Where are you going, Daddy?" Tyler asked.
"I just have to go somewhere for a bit," he replied. He couldn’t tell his child where he was going because it might lead to misunderstandings.
Tyler shook his head. "I don’t want you to go, Daddy. Stay here," he replied.
Ethan sat beside him to convince his child. "Daddy will just be gone for a bit, Tyler. I’ll be back."
Tyler shook his head repeatedly and started crying. "I don’t want you to leave, Daddy. Don’t go," he said.
Tyler hugged Ethan tightly as if he didn’t want to let him go. "Daddy, don’t leave. Don’t leave me here. You said you love me? If you love me, you won’t go."
Ethan took a deep breath.
He felt a tightness in his chest, unable to decide because if he didn’t leave, what about Calvin who was waiting for him? But if he left, Tyler might think he didn’t love him.
He was torn between staying and leaving.
But when Tyler started crying loudly, Ethan decided to stay by his side. He knew Calvin was a very understanding child. He was sure Calvin would understand. He would make it up to him the next day.
Ethan took another deep breath.
"Okay, Tyler. I’ll stay," he said.
Focused on Tyler, Ethan didn’t notice the triumphant smile on Olivia’s lips.
