Chapter 119: Chapter 119
Calvin was very excited because every day he would ask his father when they would go to the amusement park.
They couldn’t go on weekdays because Calvin had school and they were busy at the office. So Ethan promised they would go on the weekend. Today was that day. Last night, he asked his father again, and Ethan told him they would go today, which is probably why Calvin woke up early.
"Of course not, Calvin. I didn’t forget my promise," Ethan replied.
"It’s just that it’s still early and the amusement park is still closed," Ethan said with a laugh.
"The place we’re going to opens at nine, and it’s only six."
"Oh," Calvin replied.
Lane smiled to herself when she saw her child’s reaction as he pouted.
She eventually got up from bed. "I’ll just prepare our breakfast," she said after a while.
"Let Lily and the others prepare our breakfast, Lane," Ethan said to her.
"I’ll just help," she said. She was used to doing it herself, even when they were in Virginia. She was the one who cooked breakfast even though Mae was with her there.
"Stay, Lane," Ethan said. "Let’s just cuddle."
She had no choice but to return to bed as Ethan pulled her back and hugged her tightly. When Calvin saw that, he snuggled in front of both Ethan and Lane.
They stayed in that position until they decided to go down for breakfast.
After eating, they went back to the room to get ready to leave. Before she took a shower, she bathed and dressed Calvin.
She thought that while she was bathing and dressing Calvin, Ethan had already showered and dressed.
She was wrong because he hadn’t showered yet. She only found out why. He was waiting for her so they could shower together.
It wasn’t just a shower that happened in the bathroom, because while they were under the water, Ethan’s hands were all over her, touching and squeezing until something happened between them.
They took a long time, and if they hadn’t heard their child’s voice, they might have stayed longer.
Lane was thankful that Ethan didn’t leave a mark on her neck because she didn’t want to wear a turtleneck to their destination, nor did she want to apply concealer because it would surely get sticky when she sweated. He didn’t mark her neck, but he left love marks all over her body.
Now, the three of them were in the car on their way to the amusement park. Calvin seemed extremely excited, constantly asking how much longer it would take.
They were halfway through the drive when Ethan’s phone rang.
"Lane, you answer it," Ethan said to her.
When he was driving with them in the car, he avoided answering the phone. He often had her answer the calls.
Lane hesitantly took the phone. She paused when she saw who was calling.
"Who’s calling, Lane?" Ethan asked her.
She took a deep breath. "It’s Olivia," she replied.
She noticed his eyebrows knit together.
"Let it go, Lane," he said to her.
"It’s okay, Ethan," she replied. She didn’t wait for Ethan to speak because she answered the call shortly after.
"E-Ethan!"
Lane frowned upon hearing the crack in Olivia’s voice on the other line. Soon after, she heard her crying.
"E-Ethan, Tyler... we took him to the hospital."
Lane dropped the phone as Ethan suddenly slammed on the brakes.
"Fuck!" he cursed, quickly pulling the car over and turning to them. "Are you both okay?" he asked.
She nodded. "What about you, Calvin?"
"I’m okay, Daddy."
"I’m sorry," he apologized. Then he picked up the phone that had fallen to talk to Olivia. It remained on speakerphone, allowing her to still hear Olivia’s crying.
"E-Ethan, our son needs you. Tyler needs you."
....
Ethan’s heart was pounding like crazy when he found out what happened to Tyler. At that moment, he was completely overwhelmed with worry.
He was speechless for a second, but once he recovered from the shock, he managed to find his voice. "Which hospital did you take Tyler to?" he asked.
When he got the address, he immediately hung up. He glanced at Lane, who was watching him with deep concern in her eyes.
"Lane..."
He hadn’t even said it yet, but it seemed she already knew what he was thinking because she gave him an understanding smile.
"Go to Tyler, Ethan. He needs you," she said.
"What about Calvin?" he asked.
"I’ll explain it to him," she said. "You know Calvin. He’ll understand," she added.
He sighed in relief. Just as she started to unbuckle her seatbelt, he stopped her.
"Stay, Lane. Take my car. I’ll just catch a cab," he told her.
"But—"
"I’ll feel better knowing you’re in my car," he interrupted. "So, please..."
She simply nodded. He unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned over to kiss her forehead.
"Thank you," he said. Ethan was truly grateful that she understood exactly how he felt.
Lane just smiled back. He then turned his attention to his son in the backseat.
"Calvin, Daddy can’t go to the amusement park with you today, okay? There’s an emergency."
Calvin didn’t say anything, just kept staring at him. When their eyes met, Ethan could see the heartbreak written all over his face.
His lips parted slightly. Seeing his son like that felt like a heavy weight on his chest. His expression remained pained as he looked back at Lane.
"Go on, Ethan. I’ll take care of Calvin," she said.
Ethan took a deep breath. He hated leaving his family, but Tyler needed him more right now.
He opened the door and stepped out. Before closing it, he peeked back inside.
"Take care, Lane," he said. "I’ll call you later."
Just before the door shut, he heard Calvin start to cry. It felt like his heart was breaking right then and there. But Ethan braced himself, knowing that once Tyler was safe and sound, he would make it up to Calvin.
Before he could change his mind, he flagged down a taxi. He hopped in the moment it pulled over and gave the driver the hospital’s name.
It didn’t take long for Ethan to arrive.
He paid the driver quickly, skipping the change because he was in such a rush to get inside. He headed straight for the reception desk to find out where his son was.
The nurse told him that Tyler had just been moved to a private room. Once he had the room number, he sprinted there.
Ethan reached the door and knocked three times before heading inside. His eyes went straight to Tyler, who was lying in the hospital bed with an IV in his hand. Olivia sat beside him, clutching his hand and crying.
Seeing his son like that felt like someone was squeezing his heart.
"Ethan..." Olivia said when she saw him.
He sighed deeply again and stepped closer to the bed. Olivia stood up to give him some space. He watched her wipe the tears from her eyes.
He gazed tenderly at his child who was sleeping soundly, though his face was worryingly pale. He reached out to gently caress his son’s cheek.
"How is he, Olivia?" he asked.
"The doctor is still observing him," she replied.
"What happened, Olivia?" he asked, glancing her way.
More tears started falling down her face.
"He just wants your attention, Ethan. He feels like your child with Lane is more important. He thinks you love Calvin more because you’re always with him," she said, her voice trembling.
She wiped her eyes and took a deep breath before continuing.
"I keep talking to him, but I can’t control his thoughts. I had no idea he was planning something to get your attention. I just found out he was intentionally drinking spoiled milk to get sick so you’d show up."
Ethan’s eyes widened. Learning the truth felt like a thousand hands were crushing his heart, causing him immense pain.
Meanwhile, Lane looked down at her son when she noticed how quiet he had become. They were already at the amusement park. She and Calvin had continued the trip even though Ethan couldn’t make it.
Earlier, Calvin’s eyes were sparkling with excitement, but now they were filled with nothing but sadness.
Lane knew exactly why. It was because of Ethan. She knew he was hurt because his dad wasn’t there. When Ethan had left the car, Calvin had cried, begging his daddy not to go. She had done her best to explain why he had to leave.
As a parent, Lane understood Ethan’s reaction to the news. If she were in his shoes, she would be losing her mind with worry too. That was why she had pushed him to go. She knew that even if he stayed, his mind would be at the hospital with Tyler anyway.
Lane took a calming breath, pulled her son aside, and knelt in front of him. When he looked at her, the sadness in his eyes was heartbreaking.
"Mommy, let’s go home," he said.
Lane’s jaw dropped slightly. "We’re already here. Don’t you want to ride the Ferris wheel?" she asked.
"I don’t want to anymore, Mommy," he replied.
"Because Daddy isn’t here."
"Didn’t I explain why your Daddy couldn’t come?"
He nodded. "But I want Daddy to be with us when we ride the Ferris wheel," he insisted.
"Don’t you want to be with Mommy?" she asked gently. "I can ride with you instead."
"I do, Mommy. But I want Daddy to be there too," he said.
"Alright. So what should we do? Are we really going home?"
He nodded repeatedly. "Yes, Mommy. Let’s come back when Daddy can come, okay?"
She looked at him for a moment before nodding. "Okay," she agreed.
She was surprised when he suddenly threw his arms around her. "Thank you, Mommy. And I’m sorry," he whispered.
She gently stroked his back, then stood up. She took Calvin’s hand and started to lead him away, but they hadn’t even taken a step before her phone started ringing. She pulled it out to check the caller ID.
It was Ethan. She answered immediately. "Hello?"
"Lane, are you and Calvin at the park yet?" Ethan asked.
"Yes. But we’re actually heading home now," she told him.
"What?"
She looked down at her son. "Calvin wants you to be here with us, so we’re calling it a day."
She heard him let out a heavy sigh.
"I’m so sorry," he apologized.
"It’s okay, Ethan. I told Calvin we’d come back when you can join us," she said.
"Of course we will," he quickly replied.
"By the way, how’s Tyler?" she asked after a moment.
"He’s under observation," he said.
"What exactly happened? Why is he in the hospital?"
When he finally told her, Lane’s eyes went wide with shock.
"He drank spoiled milk just to get my attention, Lane.
