Chapter 124: Chapter 124
Glancing at her phone on the center table, Lane heard it ring.
She put down what she was holding to pick up and see who was calling. She couldn’t help but smile when she saw it was Ethan.
It was Ethan.
When she saw it was him, she immediately answered. "Hello?"
"Love."
Lane bit her lip when she heard Ethan call her that. Even though she had heard it many times, it still gave her a thrill.
She wasn’t a teenager anymore, but Lane couldn’t help but feel excited when Ethan called her "love."
"Why are you calling?" she asked in a sweet voice.
"I might be a bit late coming home. I just need to take care of something, love. But I’ll try to make it in time for dinner," he said.
"Okay," she replied. "Just make sure to call me whether you can make it or not, okay?" She wanted to know so they wouldn’t wait around for nothing with Calvin if he ended up being held up.
"I will, love," he replied.
Then she frowned when she noticed something unusual in his voice. "Are you okay, Ethan?" she asked, concern evident in her tone.
She heard him take a deep breath. Even though he hadn’t answered yet, Lane knew there was a problem.
He had told her he was meeting his friend Adam. Was there a problem with Adam, or did Adam have news for Ethan that made him sound so strange?
"I’ll tell you later, love. I just need to confirm something," he replied.
Lane frowned even more. So there was indeed a problem. She wanted to press him, but she thought it would be better to ask in person. She would wait for him later so they could talk.
"Okay," she replied.
"Thank you, love," he said. "Anyway, can I talk to Calvin? I just want to let him know in case he looks for me."
"Hold on," she said. She called out to their child, who was busy coloring in a book. "Calvin, sweetheart, Daddy wants to talk to you."
As soon as he heard her, he got up from the floor and walked over. He took the phone she handed him and put it to his ear.
"Hello, Daddy?" Calvin said. He didn’t speak further, seemingly listening to what his daddy was saying. Lane noticed her child nodding as if agreeing.
"Okay, Daddy," he said after a while. "I love you too, Daddy. Yes, I’ll tell Mommy."
Soon after, Calvin handed her the phone. Ethan was no longer on the line.
"Mommy, Daddy said he loves you," her son told her.
Lane pouted at what he said. Ethan hadn’t told her directly. He had passed it through their son. She hadn’t been able to say "I love you" back, so she grabbed her phone to message him.
I love you too.
After sending it, Lane placed the phone back on the center table. She didn’t wait for Ethan’s reply. What mattered was that she got to say those words to him.
She continued folding the laundry she had just finished. When she was done, she took the clothes to the bedroom and put them in the cabinet. She then returned to her son in the living room.
"Calvin, Mommy is just in the kitchen. I’m going to cook dinner," she told him.
"Okay, Mommy," he replied, glancing at her.
Lane stepped toward the kitchen. It was still a bit early, but she wanted to get the cooking done so she could rest later. When it was time to eat, she would just reheat the food.
She decided on pot roast. She swung the fridge open and grabbed everything she needed. It was a good thing she’d gone grocery shopping yesterday.
Lane got to work, dicing up carrots, potatoes, and onions. Once the prep was done, she started cooking. She began by sautéing the garlic and onions, but after a minute, her nose wrinkled at a sudden, foul scent.
She reflexively covered her face, looking around to see where the stench was coming from. She leaned in closer to the Dutch oven, but the second she caught the scent from the pan, she slapped a hand over her mouth.
She felt a wave of nausea hit her so hard she nearly gagged. That was definitely the source. She scrambled to the sink, barely making it before she started retching.
Nothing came up but saliva, but the dry heaving left her lightheaded. She stood frozen for a moment, white-knuckling the edge of the sink for support. Once the room stopped spinning and she felt a little more steady, she finally managed to move again.
Lane turned on the faucet to rinse her mouth. But after a moment, she froze as a realization hit her.
It feels like I have been here before. This was exactly what happened when I was pregnant with Calvin.
Pregnant?
Lane’s eyes widened in shock.
She might be pregnant. Ethan hadn’t been using protection because he wanted her to conceive. He was ensuring she would get pregnant because he wanted another child after Calvin.
What she was feeling now was exactly what she felt when she was pregnant with Calvin.
She experienced vomiting whenever she smelled something unpleasant. In fact, she had noticed some changes in her body, but hadn’t paid much attention to them because the last time she felt this way and took a pregnancy test, the result had been negative. In the past few days, she had been experiencing frequent cravings that she had just ignored.
Lane quickly turned off the stove and went to the bedroom to get a pregnancy kit.
There were some left from what Ethan had bought before. He had bought five. He had wanted her to use them all to be sure, but she hadn’t followed his advice. She had left two and only used three.
When she entered the bedroom, she took the kit from the drawer and went straight to the bathroom.
Lane took a deep breath before testing herself. Her heart was pounding as she waited for the result. She was almost holding her breath when she saw one red line appear.
Lane couldn’t take her eyes off the test. Her lips parted when another red line appeared beside the first one.
To be certain, she used another one. Just like the first result, there were two red lines again.
As Lane looked at the two lines on the test, she couldn’t hold back her tears. Her heart was filled with joy at the realization that she was pregnant.
....
After thanking Adam for the favor, Ethan said goodbye and left. He headed to the hospital to meet Morgan and obtain the DNA test results for Tyler and himself.
According to Morgan, the DNA test result was ready. At that moment, his heart was pounding with anxiety. Ethan already suspected what the outcome would be, but he wanted to see it in person to confirm if his suspicions were correct.
In truth, if Morgan hadn’t called him, he would have gone straight to Uncle Lucas.
He would have told him about what he had discovered and wouldn’t have let his deception go unpunished. All this time, he had been fooled without even realizing it.
He couldn’t fathom how Lucas could betray him like that, especially when it involved Lane, his own niece.
He couldn’t believe that Uncle Lucas had been paying off the private investigators he hired to find Lane. He had thought Lane was hiding well because no matter what he did to find her, even though he hired private investigators multiple times, the results were always negative.
It turned out the PIs were manipulating the results under Lucas’s orders.
That was why he was so shocked to learn that Lane had been in Virginia the whole time. It was impossible for them not to find Lane if she had stayed there for almost five years. When Ethan remembered that, he couldn’t help but feel anger toward Uncle Lucas and his PIs.
Did they really think they could fool him forever? They were wrong because no secret remains uncovered. Ethan was determined to make them pay dearly for what they had done to him.
Because of their deception, five years were wasted that he could have spent with his family. If his PI had told him where Lane was and hadn’t deceived him, he could have apologized to her right away.
She wouldn’t have spent so much time thinking he didn’t love her or that he chose Olivia over her. He would have been by her side when Calvin was born, he would have been there when she needed him, and he would have witnessed his child’s first words and steps.
Because of them, so much time was wasted between him and Lane.
Ethan would make sure they paid dearly for what they had done to his family.
He took a deep breath to steady his nerves and continued walking. When he got out of the coffee shop, he immediately headed to where his car was parked and grabbed his keys. He pressed the unlock button, and the car beeped as he got inside.
Before starting the car to leave, he pulled out his phone to call Lane because he wanted to let her know he would return immediately after talking to his friend. When Lane answered, he told her exactly what he needed to.
He also spoke to Calvin, anticipating that the boy might look for him. Ethan wanted to assure him that he loved him as much as possible because he didn’t want a repeat of what happened when Calvin got upset because Ethan didn’t fulfill his promise. Calvin had thought he wasn’t important to Ethan, and he never wanted that to happen again.
After he finished talking to his family, he started the engine and drove away.
The message alert tone sounded shortly after. He didn’t read it, thinking he would do it later.
Ethan was on the road when his phone rang. He slowed down to pick it up. When he saw it was Olivia, he picked up immediately. In the past, he would have hesitated to answer her calls, but now he answered right away.
Just as he wanted to assure Calvin, he also didn’t want Tyler to feel that he didn’t love him, even though there was doubt in his heart whether Tyler was really his son.
In truth, given everything he learned about the manipulation by his private investigator under Uncle Lucas’s orders, he was certain that even the previous DNA test result with Tyler might have been manipulated. That private investigator was the one he had tasked to secretly test a strand of Tyler’s hair.
The DNA test result Morgan held would be his confirmation if everything he was thinking was correct. If Tyler was not really his son, it would explain why he had sensed it before. He didn’t feel any blood connection, nor did he see any resemblance to the child. But that doubt had disappeared when the previous DNA test result came out, claiming he was 99.99 percent his son.
That was why he had tried to make up for it, feeling guilty for doubting the child. He had done his best to be a good father to him, even though he still had many shortcomings, and he truly loved him.
He still wanted to see and read the result. What if Tyler really was his son? What if there had been no need for them to manipulate the result because he was truly his?
"Ethan," he heard Olivia say from the other line a moment later.
"What is it?" he asked in a cold voice.
"Tyler is looking for you. He’s asking if you’re coming here to visit him."
He didn’t speak for a moment. "I’m coming," Ethan simply said. He knew that if he said he wasn’t coming, Tyler would throw a tantrum again. He knew his son well, and he knew how he thought.
"Okay," Olivia replied. He detected a hint of excitement in her voice, as if she wanted him to be there. "I’ll tell Tyler so he won’t cry," she added.
Instead of commenting on what Olivia said, Ethan ended the call and tossed his phone onto the dashboard. Ethan focused on driving.
It wasn’t long before he arrived at the hospital owned by Morgan. After parking his car in the lot, he got out. With a serious expression, he walked into the hospital and went directly to Morgan’s office door.
He knocked three times to announce his presence.
"Come in," he heard Morgan’s baritone voice say from inside.
When he heard Morgan’s voice, he turned the doorknob to open it and entered. He saw Morgan stand up from his swivel chair, and he couldn’t help but glance at the folder Morgan was holding. Ethan knew that the contents of that folder were the DNA test results between him and Tyler.
"Please take a seat, Ethan," Morgan said as he stepped toward the sofa in his office.
Ethan nodded and sat down.
"The DNA test result just came out," he said. He handed him the folder. "The folder is still sealed because I respect your privacy. Only the one who conducted the test and you will be the first to know the result, Ethan."
"Thank you, Morgan," he replied. "I appreciate this."
"No worries, Ethan."
Ethan was eager to open the folder at that moment, but he decided to do it later after he left. Ethan stayed a few more moments before saying goodbye to Morgan, mentioning he would just send the payment to his bank account.
Ethan clutched the folder tightly as he exited Morgan’s office. Upon reaching the parking lot and getting into his car, he stared at the folder.
He gazed at the folder briefly before taking a deep breath. After that, he slowly opened it to find out the truth.
His heart pounded as he wondered about the result.
When Ethan finally opened it, he took out the contents. Then he read the DNA test results. Ethan nearly crumpled the paper in his hands upon reading the results.
