Chapter 125: Chapter 125
"Ethan."
Ethan couldn’t help but clench his fist in frustration when the door opened to reveal Olivia’s smiling face after he rang the doorbell. It seemed she was expecting him because she opened the door just seconds after he rang the bell.
"Good evening," she added with a smile. He didn’t return her greeting. His cold eyes stared at her. In that moment, the anger in his heart surged again.
Olivia seemed to notice this because her smile faded. He also noticed a hint of fear in her eyes, but it quickly disappeared. She cleared her throat and opened the door wider to let him in, stepping aside.
"Come in, Ethan. Tyler has been waiting for you," Olivia said.
Ethan entered the apartment silently. He felt Olivia close the door and follow him. "Tyler, your Daddy is here," Olivia said a moment later to catch the attention of her son, who was sitting on the sofa engrossed in his phone.
Ethan saw Tyler take his attention away from the phone and look up. When Tyler saw him, a smile immediately appeared on his face. Ethan saw Tyler put down the phone and get off the sofa to approach him.
"Daddy!" Tyler said with a cheerful voice. When Tyler raised his arms, Ethan immediately picked him up.
Tyler kissed him on the cheek. In that moment, Ethan felt a tightness in his chest as he looked at the boy.
"I thought you weren’t coming, Daddy," Tyler said.
"I came, Tyler," he replied.
"Thank you, Daddy, for coming," Tyler said in a sweet voice.
He responded with just a smile.
A moment later, Ethan looked at Olivia when she cleared her throat.
"I’ll just be in the kitchen setting the table for dinner," Olivia said.
"Daddy, please eat here, okay? Mom cooked," Tyler said after hearing his mother.
He looked at Tyler briefly before slowly nodding. "Yay!" Tyler exclaimed happily when he agreed to his request.
Ethan walked toward the sofa while carrying Tyler. He set him down beside him, and Tyler quickly grabbed his phone and continued watching. He also placed the folder he was holding on the table, intending to give the DNA test results to Olivia later.
When he remembered the results, his mixed emotions surfaced.
There was anger, sadness, and joy. He felt anger toward Olivia for deceiving and manipulating him for so long.
There was sadness because he had grown fond of Tyler.
The DNA test result between him and Tyler came back at zero percent. It meant he wasn’t connected to the boy, meaning Tyler wasn’t his son. Ethan was right to suspect that Tyler might not be his son because he didn’t feel any familial bond when he was born.
He was also right in suspecting that Uncle Lucas manipulated the DNA test he had done through his private investigator.
Now he strongly suspected that Olivia might be complicit in all of this. She knew Tyler wasn’t his son, which is why she must have told her father to manipulate the DNA result because otherwise, her secret would come to light.
It wasn’t just Uncle Lucas and the private investigator who deceived him, but Olivia as well. He didn’t know how long she planned to keep the truth from him, but it seemed she had no intention of telling him the truth because she kept making him believe Tyler was his son.
If he hadn’t seen the man who went to the hospital and witnessed their argument, he might have still turned a blind eye to her lies.
Because of this lie, he wasn’t the only one affected.
Tyler was affected even more. The boy thought Ethan was his real father, but it turned out he wasn’t his biological dad. Tyler seemed attached to him, and he would surely be hurt once he found out the truth.
Didn’t Olivia think that her actions could hurt their child? Wasn’t she worried about the child’s mental health?
There was also a part of his heart that felt happy because he had no connection with Olivia. He knew that even if Lane didn’t say anything to him, she was hurt whenever she saw Tyler.
He didn’t want to hurt her, but he couldn’t do anything before because Tyler was a part of his life, and he believed he was his real child.
"Tyler, Ethan, the table is ready."
After a while, Ethan heard Olivia call to them. Tyler put down his phone and got off the sofa. After that, he took his hand and gently pulled him toward the kitchen.
"Come on, Daddy," he invited him.
Ethan couldn’t do anything but let Tyler lead him. He would indulge him because it seemed like it would be the last time he visited. With what he learned, he wouldn’t cut ties with Tyler immediately, but after talking to Olivia, he planned to talk to Tyler’s real father.
He would ask him to take responsibility as a father.
Honestly, he also wanted Olivia to pay for her lies and deceit, but he was thinking of Tyler. If he did that, what about the child? Who would take care of him?
"Daddy, sit down," Tyler said.
"I’ll just wash my hands," he replied. After that, he stepped to the sink.
While washing his hands, his gaze fell on the trash bin near the sink. He couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow as he looked at it. He clearly saw plastic from a restaurant container there.
When Ethan saw that, he immediately thought that the dishes Olivia served were from a restaurant and she was pretending again that she cooked them.
Is she still insisting that she knows how to cook? Is she still lying even now? She wasn’t just deceiving him, she was also deceiving herself.
Ethan took a deep breath and stepped toward the dining table.
Tyler was already seated, so he sat beside him. In the next moment, they started eating.
"Just eat, Ethan. I hope you like what I cooked," Olivia said with a smile.
Ethan wanted to tell Olivia that she hadn’t cooked it, but had bought it from outside, but he didn’t because he didn’t want to embarrass her in front of Tyler.
He could hardly eat properly because of the swirling thoughts running through his mind.
Before long, they finished eating. Olivia offered to wash the dishes. He said he would take care of Tyler.
He took him to the room, bathed him, and dressed him. After that, he put him to sleep. He couldn’t talk to Olivia while Tyler was awake. He had so much he wanted to say to her.
To make Tyler fall asleep quickly, he decided to lie beside him and read a bedtime story. He thought he would have a hard time getting Tyler to sleep, but he was wrong. Soon, Tyler fell asleep.
He adjusted Tyler’s position and covered him with a blanket.
Once he was sure Tyler was sound asleep, he stood up from the edge of the bed and stepped out of the room. He met Olivia, who was entering.
"Tyler?" she asked.
"He’s asleep," he replied in a cold voice.
As he looked at her, he noticed the hint of regret in her expression.
At that moment, her expression was easy to read. He knew she felt regret because it meant he would be leaving her condo.
In another situation, he might have left already, as he wanted to be with his family, who were surely waiting for him. But because he needed to talk to Olivia, he had to stay there for now.
"Olivia," he called her name.
"Hmm?"
"Let’s talk," he said. "I have something to tell you," he added in a serious voice.
He noticed the anxiety in her expression, but after a moment, she nodded.
Ethan stepped toward the living room, and he sensed her following him.
"What are we going to talk about, Ethan?" she asked.
Rather than answering, he picked up the folder from the center table. After that, he faced her.
"Here," he said, handing her the folder.
He noticed her slight frown, but after a moment, she took it. "What is this, Ethan?" she asked.
"Why don’t you open it and see for yourself?" he said instead of answering.
Curiosity was still evident in Olivia’s expression as she opened the folder.
Ethan kept his eyes on Olivia, wanting to see her reaction when she read the contents.
When she did, Olivia’s eyes widened in disbelief.
....
OLIVIA’S POV
Olivia couldn’t help but be curious as she opened the folder Ethan had handed her. She didn’t know what it was or what it was about. Ethan wouldn’t tell her because he wanted her to open the folder to see the contents for herself.
Olivia also wanted to know what she and Ethan were going to talk about when he had said he wanted to speak with her.
She was quite curious, but she was even more anxious about the contents of the folder she was holding.
When she finally opened it, her eyes widened in shock. She couldn’t stop her heart from racing as she looked at the documents inside and finished reading them.
The folder contained the DNA test results for Ethan and Tyler. The results proved that the two were not father and son.
When did Ethan have a DNA test done? Did he need to collect sample strands from Tyler? Why did he have a test done? Wasn’t the result of the secretly conducted DNA test enough to convince him that Tyler was his son?
When did he start doubting again? Didn’t her father know about it? Did Ethan’s private investigator tell her father that he had another test done?
Damn. There were so many questions racing through her mind at that moment. She noticed her hands trembling due to the anxiety she felt.
"Do you think you can hide the truth from me, Olivia?" Ethan asked in a cold voice.
She took a deep breath, tearing her eyes away from the results to look up at Ethan.
She was immediately met by his angry face. His gaze was fiery, and she felt a sudden rush of fear. If she didn’t know Ethan, she might have thought he was going to hit her.
But even so, she tried to deflect, even though he was holding the evidence of the secret she was hiding.
"This is wrong. I think someone manipulated the results," she said. She hoped he would believe her.
"Do you think I manipulated the results, Olivia?" he asked in a cold voice.
"Just like what your father did the first time I had Tyler’s DNA tested?"
Olivia couldn’t help but gape. She couldn’t believe Ethan had found out about that too.
"I already know what your father did, Olivia. He paid the private I hired to find Lane. Your father doubled what I paid the private investigator to say they couldn’t find her. But all along, your father knew where Lane was.
He also manipulated the DNA test results, so I wouldn’t know the truth that Tyler wasn’t my son," he continued, his voice sharp and full of anger.
She shook her head. "That is not true."
"Don’t take me for a fool, Olivia. I already know the truth," Ethan said, cutting her off.
"And I know the reason why your father did all of this."
"Your father still has this illusion that I will marry you. He thinks if I can’t find Lane, I will choose you. He wants you to become an Ashford because he wants to use my surname for his personal agenda," he continued.
"You know what? I once believed him. I believed him when he told me that Lane’s family planned for me to get her pregnant and marry her for their own interest.
I believed him when he said James wanted me to marry his daughter so his company would benefit from my name. Your father manipulated my mind, and I believed him.
I deeply regretted how I treated Lane’s family, and I was very angry with Lane back then. I treated her wrong. I treated her badly. I did a lot of things just to hurt her because I was angry, but I deeply regret it. I regret what I did because I was angry at the wrong person. To be honest, up until now, even though Lane and I are okay, and she has forgiven me, the guilt still lingers in my heart. I feel guilty for the things I said and the things I did to her when she was innocent. Her family is innocent, and I know you aren’t a fool. You know who should be blamed," Ethan spoke at length.
It seemed he had finally gathered everything he wanted to say to her. As he spoke, his eyes narrowed, and his voice sharpened with anger.
"I should have directed my anger toward you and your father, Olivia, not Lane’s family. You have ulterior motives for clinging to me. You are just like your father, Olivia. You are both greedy, scheming liars," he said.
"Nothing is important to you except the money and power attached to my name. You think if I marry you, you and your father will live like royalty."
Olivia bit her lower lip as she felt the pain in her heart from what Ethan said. His words cut deep.
"And do you know what I regret most in life? That I let myself be fooled by you, that I believed you. I believed you cooked the food you served me when, in fact, it was Lane who cooked it."
She was about to open her mouth to speak, but he continued.
"Don’t even try to deny it, Olivia. I’ve known for a long time that it was Lane who cooked the food you served me before. And just like what you did now, you claimed you cooked it, but you actually bought it from a restaurant."
Olivia closed her mouth. She couldn’t help but feel embarrassed. She never imagined that Ethan would find out about that too.
"And I regret ever loving you, Olivia," Ethan added.
He took a deep breath.
"And one more thing, Olivia. Tell your father that I will make him pay for everything he did to Lane and me. I will make him pay threefold. You should have been included in that, but you are still lucky because of Tyler. However, if you do anything to harm Lane again, there will be no mercy. I will not hesitate to drag you down. So stay quiet and focus on taking care of Tyler."
He didn’t wait for her to respond. He simply turned and left her condo.
Once Ethan finally left, Olivia collapsed onto the sofa, her legs trembling from his words.
