Aside from that, Motan was fortunate enough to meet an auxiliary spirit older than Diana, Kenneth, and Ta·Lashaka combined—
That was the tower spirit ’Dorami’ he dealt with at the Timing Tower on the Descendants of the Dragon Clan when he was known as ’Mor’.
In other words, this duo of ’truly understanding’ + ’playing dumb’ with unscrupulous hearts immediately sensed that the being in front of them claiming to be a ’Book Spirit’ was not speaking honestly.
The difference was that Double Leaf slammed the table and asked directly, while Frank Hughes sat quietly in the chair, willingly becoming part of the background.
Incidentally, the other part of the background was a gray mist, and the wooden door that looked so out of place in the mist—the entrance they came through.
The Book Spirit remained silent for a while, two minutes passed before he continued in his flat tone to ask Double Leaf, "What do you mean?"
"What do you mean?"
Double Leaf rolled her eyes and chuckled dryly, "Do you take us for fools? This place is the largest library on the continent, no exceptions, filled with people lusting for knowledge galore. Even if we put aside people like me who only get a chance to come here to read during times like this, the largest group in the city—the students—they would not be any less eager for knowledge before major exams or tests than we are."
"Yet, until today, I’ve hardly heard any legends about a ’Book Spirit’."
Motan also chimed in with a harmless smile: "I’ve heard no less than twenty versions of the inexplicable happenings in Academy City X, but none of them mention your existence."
Double Leaf reluctantly cast a glance of approval at Motan, then turned back to the Book Spirit with a light laugh: "So, if it were truly like you said just now, where strong enough desire for knowledge could bring you joy, along with resonance and such, your esteemed name as the Book Spirit would have spread throughout Academy City by now."
"But indeed..."
Motan smiled slightly, speaking softly, "Even if someone truly knows of your existence, Mr. Book Spirit, that number is likely quite small, so—"
Double Leaf blinked lazily: "There should be some other reasons for inviting us to this place, right?"
"That’s right."
Seeing the duo put on quite the analytical show, the Book Spirit no longer hid anything and calmly stated: "Although I’ve never intentionally hidden my existence, the number of those aware is indeed not large."
Double Leaf nodded with interest, smiling: "Could you conveniently tell us why?"
"The reason, I actually already mentioned before."
The tower spirit looked at the girl in front of him and said frankly: "My personality is built upon people’s desire and pursuit of knowledge. In other words, my existence’s significance is in the pursuit of knowledge, where this ’knowledge’ must fulfill the ’unknown’ condition."
Double Leaf was momentarily taken aback.
Frank squinted his eyes slightly.
"So..."
The Book Spirit curled his lips and smiled for the first time in front of them: "The half-truth I didn’t finish saying was that ’Even if someone’s desire for knowledge has resonated with me, if the person doesn’t possess unknown knowledge that I crave, I won’t send an [invitation].’
Frank Hughes’s expression became more nuanced.
While Double Leaf collected her previously nonchalant demeanor, staring intensely at the Book Spirit before her and asking slowly: "Do you know?"
"I know."
The Book Spirit replied seriously (though it had always been serious).
"Know what?"
Motan scratched his head in confusion.
"..."
Double Leaf frowned slightly, her expression shifting unpredictably.
It was clear the Book Spirit had discovered she wasn’t a local, a fact Double Leaf didn’t really want the man named Frank Hughes next to her to know.
So, rarely, she found herself in a predicament.
"Mr. Book Spirit."
"Hmm."
"Can you silently make this guy disappear? Anyway, he’s of no use to you, right."
"I cannot."
"Tch..."
After the plan to kill and cover up failed, simultaneously giving Frank a cold sweat, Double Leaf remained conflicted.
However, this conflict didn’t last long because—
"Okay, actually I know... uh, sort of."
Motan scratched his cheek awkwardly, nodding sheepishly at the increasingly grim Double Leaf.
"You know?!"
Double Leaf was startled, exclaiming: "How do you know, what makes you know, could it be you..."
"That’s right."
Motan nodded, shrugging just before Double Leaf displayed murderous intent: "I heard from Diana. Uh, of course, she didn’t intentionally expose your secret, it’s just... maybe she likes you a lot, so she often mentions things about you."
Double Leaf was frozen as if struck by lightning.
She despaired to find, considering Diana’s character, the likelihood of unintentionally revealing her identity as an Otherworlder was simply too high, not to mention that Frank Hughes was actually a smart person.
"And after we met, Double Leaf, you often said things I couldn’t understand."
Motan spread his hands helplessly: "With what Mr. Book Spirit said just now, if I’m not mistaken... Miss Futaba, you probably aren’t from our world."
"Don’t make me sound like some interdimensional summoning creature."
Double Leaf glared at Motan, gritting her teeth: "Though I do count as an ’Otherworlder’ to you people, I’m actually a higher dimension creature, compared to your existence, we’re worlds apart, I’m the cloud!"
Motan nodded compliantly: "Yes, I’m the mud."
"Fine, since we’re at this point."
Double Leaf messily ruffled her hair with frustration, fiercely glaring at the Book Spirit that had remained silent: "Tell us, fatboy, what’s your goal in summoning us two Otherworlders here?"
The latter shook his head, correcting: "If we’re talking about the ’Otherworlder’ concept, only Lady Shuangye fits the requirement. As for this Mr. Frank, I’m just concerned about him encountering danger alone in the forbidden book area."
"Hmph."
The girl snorted softly, her gaze softened slightly: "Then, why did you call me here ultimately?"
"Just wanted to make contact and chat for a bit."
The Book Spirit shook his head again, indicating he had no particular purpose, though he added: "However, if Miss Futaba can tell me something ’unknown’ to me, I can give you some small rewards in exchange."
Immediately after, a system notification rang unexpectedly in Double Leaf’s ear.
Without even opening the quest panel, Double Leaf promptly stood up, leaning on the table: "For example?"
"For example, recommending some books that might be helpful to you but are easily overlooked."
"Okay, then what’s your current level of knowledge?"
"Library."
"Hmm."
Double Leaf furrowed her brow, asking: "How’s that supposed to mean?"
The Book Spirit calmly delivered a despair-inducing answer: "I know all the contents of the collections in this library."
"Alright, I knew it."
But Double Leaf didn’t despair, she merely nodded slightly and glanced at Motan, speaking mildly to the Book Spirit: "Have this person step aside."
"Please follow me."
The Book Spirit didn’t make Motan step aside, but merely stood up and walked to the wooden door that hadn’t existed a moment ago within the mist, inviting Double Leaf.
"Alright."
Double Leaf immediately stood up, then looked back with a smile at the slightly bewildered Motan—
"I’ll be right back, stay put, don’t move."
