[Foster Ward! What the hell are you doing!]
Motan clenched his fists tightly inside his sleeves, walking down the stairs shoulder to shoulder with the girl beside him, while roaring inwardly, grinding his teeth almost to dust to keep from shouting out loud.
Though he tried to maintain his image in front of someone without showing any unusual behavior, aside from looking slightly sleep-deprived, everything was the same as usual. But the rare holiday he longed for was devastated beyond recognition, and the culprit was the ’K’ that always brought a sense of reassurance. Such an incident truly made it hard for Motan to let go.
However, being hard to let go didn’t help much; he was merely an apprentice of the Holy Church Union delegation, effectively at the bottom of the food chain in this small team. Despite getting along well with Master Tom, Fyari, Black, and others, it couldn’t change the fact that Motan was just a small character. In principle, he had to be obedient, compliant, and readily available and dismissible.
Of course, his objective status is one thing, but as one of the most promising young talents of the Church of the Dawn, Motan’s influence actually wasn’t insignificant, and if he wished, he could be slightly more flamboyant.
Not to mention anything else, but if he accepted the accolades for his merits at Holy Mountain Sumier, his status at this moment certainly wouldn’t fall short of Fyari and Black. Even from the sect’s perspective, God’s Chosen is undoubtedly more important than a Commander, but someone able to take over Sumier’s auxiliary command as a Holy Church Union’s accompanying Priest, guiding the Whisper Sect Northeast Diocese and Holy Church Union Northern Expeditionary Army with the thinnest hand, and even forcing the Northern Expeditionary Army’s involvement during the later phases by exploiting intelligence, information, and geographical discrepancies, this war achievement once publicized would surely make the ’Black Vatican Priest’ of the Holy Church Union be renowned.
But this matter really couldn’t be publicized.
Internally, the Church of the Dawn adhered to the strong wishes of the ’Black Vatican Priest’ — ’Be low-key! Be low-key! Please don’t make me famous!’ without promoting the event massively; hence only a few are aware, although the top ranks of major sects are mostly informed, some even procured the ’True Detailed Battle Report’ of the Holy Mountain Sumier event through special means. But none would foolishly help publicize or engage in unrewarding operations.
Externally, the Holy Church Union also didn’t unusually use their rising talent for promotion and hype, neither due to the senior figures having issues with ’Black Vatican Priest’ nor discrimination against ’Commanders’. It was primarily because some matters were unexplainable despite any effort...
Why is someone so capable merely a common military Priest?
If during the beginning everyone was unaware of Hei Fan’s skills, then what about afterward?
After gaining control over Sumier’s command, why didn’t he directly connect with the Northern Expeditionary Army but intervened in the war as a third-party force?
Why as a Saint Church Union Northern Expeditionary Army embedded military Priest, did the young Hei Fan appear at Holy Mountain Sumier, and in the final stage of this campaign deal a blow to ’our own side’?
If Motan’s actions were exposed publicly, resulting in his reputation soaring, these matters would inevitably be aired, researched, contemplated, and analyzed, eventually revealing the absolute truth.
And we all know, so-called ’truth’ most often isn’t something glamorous and wonderful.
Thus, all things considered, ultimately——
Motan’s previous movements in Sumier were just as he wished, buried from view.
The advantage of this is that Motan can succeed in temporarily leading a quiet life (he remains unaware of his imminent foreign assignment) where no one pays attention or bothers him, living comfortably without burdens, away from public focus and unlikely to be swept into any bizarre events (again emphasizing, his foreign assignment is in fact confirmed).
The downside is also evident; as a non-distinctive figure, ’Black Vatican Priest’s’ influence is extremely low, hence many matters couldn’t be driven by his personal perspective; if he wishes to maintain his persona, he must obediently follow organizational arrangements without putting on airs.
Yet to address it, hypothetically if his turbulent activities in Sumier were exposed, at most, Fyari and Black couldn’t do anything against him, as Master Tom as the seasoned God’s Chosen of the Church of the Dawn could easily dictate matters for Motan with the stance of ’I don’t care about your opinion, I care about mine.’
Additionally, if truly exposed, the Warfire League would likely have visited him by now; ultimately, neither monks nor temples would escape.
So, by thinking about this, Motan became relieved ninety percent, as for the residual resentment towards Foster Ward, truthfully, it was quite futile.
The reason is straightforward, despite his absolute neutrality-driven personality’s dissatisfaction with Foster, causing trouble or inconveniencing Foster wasn’t within his current capability. To put it bluntly, when he’s acting as the ’Tan Mo’ who established the Clown Brand, he might not care about such things at all.
In other words, Motan’s annoyance at Foster equaled annoyance at himself, and even if he’s fed up with himself, he couldn’t convert this resentment into tangible action, not even the action of using slippers to strike Foster squarely in the face.
