She gave him a small, genuine smile... one entirely free of the terror that had choked her earlier. "But Zeyra’s right. Mother and the High Shaman will be waiting to discuss the morning march."
Sol nodded, slowly releasing them both as he stood up. Water cascaded off his muscular, bronze torso, sparkling in the night air as he stepped out of the shallow stream onto the flat mossy ledge.
He reached down, picking up his linen tunic and pulling it over his head, followed by his trousers.
He picked the dented, heavy black armor lying in a pile by the rock, slinging the leather scabbard of the Dreadwing blade over his back before turning toward the two women.
"Let’s go," Sol said smoothly.
The walk back to the central encampment was quiet and serene.
The trail that had been filled with the stench of copper and burning marrow hours ago now carried the crisp, earthy scent of night pine, as all the blood and broken body parts had been buried underneath the ground to avoid attracting the predators though with just the fires no animal would dare to come near.
As they crest the final ridge overlooking the valley basin, the sight below was vastly different from the chaotic slaughterhouse of the afternoon.
Dozens of campfires dotted the white limestone flats, casting a warm, flickering orange glow over the stone.
On the far eastern ridge, two massive, sacred funeral pyres burned brightly against the black sky, sending columns of golden sparks and white smoke curling toward the stars.
The Veynar warriors gathered around the pyres sang a low, booming ancestral chant... a heavy, rhythmic song honoring the fallen loyalists who had given their lives to shield their Warchief.
Further down in the lower gorge, under the heavy guard of a fifty-man Veynar detachment, the Coalition prisoners sat huddled in absolute silence.
Bound in heavy hemp ropes, they didn’t dare speak, their eyes wide with lingering terror whenever a shadow passed near their perimeter.
When Sol, Kira, and Zeyra stepped into the main encampment, the Veynar warriors near the fires immediately paused their work. Every eye turned toward Sol.
Yet, the paralyzing, suffocating fear that had gripped them during the battle had shifted into something far deeper... a profound, quiet reverence.
Warriors brought their right fists to their chests in silent, formal salutes as he passed, stepping aside to make a clear path toward the central command tent.
The heavy flap of the command tent pulled open just as they approached.
Warchief Veylara and High Shaman Zephyra stood inside, gathered around a large stone, functioning as a table covered in crude leather maps of the Great Orrath region. Both women had fully recovered their strength; Veylara’s sun core radiated a steady, golden warmth, while Zephyra’s silver robes flickered with faint essence.
When Veylara saw Sol enter... dressed in simple linen, without his terrifying black armor, his damp hair clinging to his forehead... a faint, subtle softness touched her deep blue eyes before her sovereign demeanor reasserted itself.
"You took your time," Veylara noted, though her voice carried no anger. She gestured toward the wooden table. "Come. We were just finalizing the logistics for the morning march."
Sol walked up to the table, leaning his hip against the edge while Kira and Zeyra stood on either side of him.
"How are the men?" Sol asked calmly.
"Exhausted, but their spirits are higher than they’ve been in three winters," Commander Thauren answered, stepping out from the shadows near the back of the tent. He bowed his head respectfully to Sol.
"The funeral rites for our fallen brothers are nearly complete. The traitors’ bodies have been burned along with the enemies without honors, as ordered."
"And the prisoners?" Sol raised an eyebrow.
"Completely docile," Thauren replied with a faint, grim smirk. "Your... demonstration earlier broke their spine. We won’t have to worry about a mutiny during the march back. They are terrified that if they step an inch out of line, you’ll turn into a hurricane again."
"Fear is efficient," Sol remarked dryly.
Zephyra stepped forward, placing a pale, slender hand on the leather map, pointing toward three distinct, shaded regions surrounding the Veynar borders.
"News of the Coalition’s total annihilation will soon spread through the forest sectors," Zephyra explained, her dark eyes locking onto Sol’s face.
"The Zharun, Zerith, and Gray Marauder territories are currently completely headless. Their elite vanguards were slaughtered here, leaving only their secondary line guards and civilian populations behind."
Veylara placed her fist on the map, her posture radiating command.
"Which is why we must act with absolute precision," Veylara stated, her voice taking on the sharp tone of a leader mapping out the next phase. "Night travel is far too dangerous for moving an entire force, and our warriors have bled too much today to march onto foreign soil immediately.
At first light tomorrow, we will all return to our main settlement together. We need to secure the captives, give our people proper rest, and resupply our weapons and rations."
She looked up at Sol, her deep blue eyes burning with an unshakeable, golden intensity.
"Once we have reorganized at the village, I will lead the warriors to march directly onto the Zharun and Marauder borders. We will absorb their territories, claim their hunting grounds, and integrate their populations before any distant warlords realize the void left and get some weird ambitions.
After all of this, the Veynar will no longer be a small, surviving tribe living carefully. We will become the indisputable sovereign power of this entire sector."
Sol looked at the map, then at Veylara’s proud, unyielding posture. The tribe that was on the absolute brink of total extinction hours ago was now preparing to build a new domain on the ashes of its enemies.
"A sound strategy," Sol said smoothly. "Returning to the village to rest and resupply first is the right move. A headless territory will still fight if you march in with exhausted men, but once you’re fully rested, you’ll sweep through them completely."
