Just as Veylara carefully tucked the precious beast-hide scroll into her belt pouch, Sol’s heightened senses twitched.
His crimson eyes narrowed.
A faint, rhythmic vibration brushed against the edge of his perception. Sensing carefully, it wasn’t coming from the woven baskets or the jars of preserved fat lined along the floor.
It was radiating directly from the solid rock face at the far rear of the cavern, deep in the shadows behind the stone table... subtle, steady, and completely out of place.
Sol stepped past the crude stone table, his boots crunching softly over loose pebbles as he approached the wall, tilting his head as his spiritual senses zeroed in on a specific section of rock.
Beneath the natural, irregular texture of the stone, there was an unnatural, condensed density vibrating in the air, humming at a frequency that made the marrow in his bones itch.
He raised his bare hand, trailing his fingertips along the rock face.
THUMP.
His fingers caught on a faint, hairline fracture. Upon closer inspection, it wasn’t a natural fault line; a small cavity had been roughly chiseled into the solid bedrock and carefully sealed over with a mixture of packed red mud, crushed bone-dust, and stone flakes, perfectly camouflaging it against the surrounding wall.
Vane hid something behind his private stash, Sol thought, a spark of cold intrigue igniting in his eyes. Something he didn’t even trust his own clan to see.
Sol hooked his fingers into the seam, grounding his heels into the cavern floor. He channeled a sudden, explosive burst of his Layer 3 Peak physical strength directly into his grip.
CRACK-CRUMBLE!
With a sharp, tearing crunch, the dried mortar gave way. Sol wrenched a heavy chunk of stone free and tossed it to the dirt, exposing a dark, hollow niche carved two feet deep into the mountain wall.
The moment the seal broke, a wave of dense, suffocating energy rolled out of the cavity, sweeping through the underground chamber like a physical draft.
Inside the niche lay two objects resting on a bed of dry mountain moss.
The first was nothing more than a hollow, brittle husk... a chalky, pale-grey shell covered in tiny fractures, drained of all vitality as if its very soul had been violently sucked dry.
The second object, resting right beside the husk, was fully intact.
It was a crystalline sphere roughly the size of a human fist, completely unpolished and uneven, glowing with a deep, pulsating slate-grey light. The stone did not merely emit illumination; it radiated a heavy, grounding pressure that warped the surrounding air, making every breath feel as thick as crushed stones.
It carried the ancient, primordial weight of condensed mountain roots.
Zephyra’s robes fluttered as she glided forward, her milky-white eyes widening in genuine, breathless shock.
"That light..." Zephyra whispered, her voice trembling with rare, profound awe as the slate-grey radiance reflected off her pale face. "It’s... a mountain-Marrow Stone."
Veylara stepped up beside them, her spear lowering slightly as her deep blue eyes locked onto the glowing crystal. Even as an established Layer 4 powerhouse who had seen the breadth of the Great Orrath, the Warchief’s breath caught in her throat.
"A Mountain-Marrow Stone?" Veylara murmured, her voice laced with solemn disbelief. "Here? In a low-altitude tribe like the Zharun?"
"There is no mistaking that density," Zephyra said, stepping closer to the niche. Her fingers hovered an inch above the pulsating sphere, feeling the heavy, rhythmic vibrations washing over her palms.
"These stones cannot be forged or refined by mortal hands. They are born only in the deepest abysses of the ground, where the essence of ancient mountain veins compresses under tectonic weight for centuries. To the tribes of the Great Orrath, they are nothing short of divine catalysts."
Sol watched the stone’s steady, rhythmic pulse. "What does it actually do?"
"It bridges the mortal divide," Zephyra explained, turning her sharp, intense gaze toward Sol. "The transition from Layer 3 Peak to Layer 4 is the most dangerous threshold a warrior can cross.
The sun core must expand outward, harmonize with the environmental laws, and endure the violent pressure of atmospheric essence rushing into the sun core. More than half the warriors who attempt it end up with shattered bodies or permanently broken cores."
She pointed a slender finger at the glowing crystal.
"The condensed mountain marrow within this stone acts as an absolute stabilizer. If absorbed during a breakthrough, it reinforces the internal pathways with immovable mountain density and forces the environmental essence to submit. It cuts the time and spiritual resistance required for a Layer 4 breakthrough clean in half."
Zephyra’s eyes then drifted to the chalky, drained shell sitting beside the glowing sphere, her expression turning dark and contemplative.
"And now we know how the Zharun suddenly managed to get another layer 4," Zephyra added in a low voice. "Look at the drained husk. Its marrow was consumed recently... Vane must have used the first stone to forcibly stabilize and push Malphas into Layer 4."
Veylara let out a cold, sharp breath, her jaw tightening. "And he kept the second one hidden away like a venomous snake... waiting to push another lineage elder into Layer 4 once the Veynar were crushed underfoot."
Sol reached into the hollow niche and closed his fingers around the glowing slate-grey crystal.
HUMMM.
The moment his skin made contact with the cold surface, a heavy, grounding shockwave traveled straight up his arm. Deep within his sun core, his dual spirits went wild. The phantom mantle of the Great Badger roared in deep, primal hunger, resonating violently with the pure, compressed earth-essence locked inside the crystal. Even the translucent membranes of the Dreadwing flared with sudden, sharp anticipation.
The stubborn, unyielding barrier that had blocked his progress after harvesting Grand Chieftain Bruga’s essence began to hum, vibrating in direct harmony with the stone’s pulse.
It wasn’t a technique scroll. It wasn’t an ancient text. It was pure, physical refinement fuel... the exact catalyst needed to anchor his massive, stolen essence reservoir and forcefully pry open the gates of Layer 4.
Sol pulled the heavy sphere from the wall, turning it over in his calloused palm with a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face.
"Well," Sol rasped, his eyes blazing with satisfaction. "Looks like the trip wasn’t a total waste after all."
Veylara looked at Sol holding the catalyst, then exchanged a brief, meaningful glance with High Shaman Zephyra. There was no hesitation, no greed, and not a single hint of objection in the Warchief’s eyes.
"Take it, Sol," Veylara said firmly, her golden voice echoing clearly off the cavern walls. "You carved this victory out with your own blood. If this stone allows you to shatter the threshold and step into Layer 4, then the Veynar will gladly stand guard while you claim it."
"Keep it safe for now," Zephyra advised quietly. "Absorbing a Mountain-Marrow Stone requires absolute focus and several hours of uninterrupted refinement. We should secure the rest of the Zharun compound first and find a fortified inner sanctum before you begin your breakthrough. For absolute safety, it would be best to wait until we return to Veynar."
"Understood," Sol said, slipping the heavy, glowing crystal into his leather belt pouch.
