Chapter 605: What Is Secret To Layer 4?

The heavy leather pouch hanging at Sol’s waist pulled down with the cold, dense weight of the Mountain-Marrow Stone.

Even muffled beneath layers of cured hide, the steady, rhythmic pulse of the ancient catalyst beat against his hip like a second heart.

Above them, the hollow echoes of the underground vault were gradually overtaken by the rhythmic stomp of heavy boots.

Commander Thauren led two dozen seasoned Veynar warriors down the narrow stone stairs, carrying woven wicker baskets and thick hemp sacks.

"Warchief. High Shaman," Thauren called out, bowing his head slightly as his eyes adjusted to the pale-green glow of the luminescent moss. He glanced at the broken niche in the wall, then at the open chests of cured pelts and dried meat.

"The outer perimeter is entirely pacified. The fires have been put out, the rogues who attempted to flee into the southern thickets were intercepted and cut down, and the remaining civilian populace is gathered in the square under guard. We are ready to inventory the supplies."

Veylara gave a sharp, decisive nod. "Haul everything to the surface. The dried game, the jars of rendered marrow-fat, the weapon caches, and every scrape of cured leather. Pack the supply sleds. Leave only enough basic food to keep the compliant laborers alive until our second detachment arrives from the Veynar."

"Understood!" Thauren barked, turning to direct his men.

Leaving the vault to the bustling warriors, Sol, Veylara, and Zephyra ascended the spiraling staircase back into the grand hall of the Zharun Great Lodge.

The scene above was already completely transformed. The thirty-nine kneeling Zharun warriors remained pressed against the packed-earth floor, bound in tight hemp cords and guarded by watchful Veynar spearmen.

The shattered body of the axe-wielder had been dragged outside and discarded in some ditch, leaving only a dark, drying stain near the broken obsidian throne.

Kira stood near the entrance, her hunting bow lowered but nocked, while Zeyra leaned against a timber pillar, cleaning a speck of dried blood from her dagger with great focus. When the two women saw Sol emerge unharmed, the quiet vigilance in their postures softened.

"Find anything interesting down there?" Zeyra asked, slipping her dagger back into its leather sheath at her hip.

"A manual on how to raise obedient dogs," Sol replied dryly, stepping past the dais. "And a rock."

Zeyra raised a dark eyebrow, letting out a faint snort of amusement. "Sounds like an absolute treasure trove."

"It is," Veylara interjected, her voice carrying the undeniable weight of sovereign pride as she patted the beast-hide roll tucked securely into her mantle. "The manual alone will secure our hunting vanguard for generations. As for the rock... it is worth more than the entire Zharun settlement combined."

Veylara walked to the wide entrance of the lodge, stepping out onto the elevated stone plateau that overlooked the entire basin. Sol and Zephyra followed, standing beside her as the cool midday mountain wind swept over the ruined village.

Below, the transition of power was unfolding with ruthless, stone-age efficiency.

The chaos that had consumed the settlement hours earlier had been completely stamped out.

Veynar kill-squads patrolled the wide dirt thoroughfares, their neat gear standing out starkly against the blackened, smoking ruins of the burned huts.

In the central clearing, nearly four thousnad surviving Zharun civilians... elderly weavers, craftspeople, terrified mothers, and young children... sat huddled in tight, submissive groups.

A dozen Veynar guards stood around the perimeter of the crowd, handing out basic water and dried rations.

The overwhelming terror that had gripped the population was slowly being replaced by a stunned, weeping relief; they had expected the conquering Veynar to butcher them all, but instead, only the looters and rapists had been slaughtered.

"A clean harvest," Veylara murmured, her deep blue eyes sweeping across the conquered territory. "We have funlly secured the Zharun. We will leave a garrison of forty warriors to oversee the rebuilding."

She turned her gaze toward the southwest, where the jagged, fog-shrouded peaks of the Gray Marauder highlands loomed on the horizon.

"We will rest our vanguard here for the afternoon, secure the granaries, and march on the Marauder stronghold at dusk," Veylara continued. "They will share the exact same fate."

Sol stood in silence for a moment, his arms crossed over his linen tunic. He looked down at his own open palm, clenching his fingers into a tight fist.

Beneath his bronze skin, his Layer 3 Peak essence surged like a roaring, violent river... vast, dense, and suffocating. Yet, right at the very boundary of his sun core, where that ocean of power should have naturally expanded outward and harmonized with the surrounding world to step into the legendary realm of Layer 4, it hit a completely solid, immovable wall.

It wasn’t a matter of volume. He had siphoned the pure vitality of Grand Chieftain Bruga, drained the cores of high-layer powerhouses, and was currently holding a pristine Mountain-Marrow Stone in his pouch.

Yet, something fundamental was broken.

"Veylara. Zephyra," Sol spoke, his raspy voice dropping into a low, serious tone that pulled both women’s attention away from the settlement. "There’s something I need to ask."

Veylara tilted her head, noting the dark, intense focus in his crimson eyes. "Speak, Sol. You have saved our tribe from extinction; there are no secrets kept from you."

Sol looked down at his chest, where the phantom presences of his dual spirits resided within his sun core.

"During the battle in the limestone pass... when I killed Bruga and stood at the absolute precipice of Layer 4... I seem to hit a wall," Sol explained, his brow furrowing slightly beneath his dark bangs.

"My core was filled to the absolute brim. The energy was boiling, ready to burst. But no matter how much force I drove into the barrier, it refused to budge. It felt like... like I was missing an entire piece of the puzzle.

What is the true secret to breaking into Layer 4? Is it some esoteric enlightenment? Do I need to understand the primordial laws of heaven and earth?
