The small sound behind the supply door opened a name tag.

The service hall peeled away. Ty stood before a cracked plastic badge hanging from a chain on the wall. The front had been scrubbed until the printed name blurred into gray. Someone had tried hard to erase whatever it used to say, then stopped when the plastic began to cloud.

The back was worse.

Two letters had been scratched into it with a paperclip.

B.H.

The cuts were uneven. One line had gone too deep and split the plastic near the clip hole.

JJ leaned close, then stopped herself before her breath could fog the memory. "That is not a real name."

"It was not trying to be," Heissman said.

Zunoder's reflection appeared in the cracked surface, the old face stretched across the broken letters. "Shortened handling mark."

Omina looked at him. "Say the useful part."

"Gladly. They shortened the storage label because it was easier to use."

The badge chain swung once.

Mara looked at it from the shelter feed and pressed her blanket flat over her knees. Rose watched her face instead of the badge, asking only whether she could look and whether she could stop after one answer.

Mara nodded both times.

Jade watched Rose, not the screen. "One answer."

Mara kept her eyes on the badge. "Staff did that on the back of tags when the front name was unsafe, disputed, or changed too often. Initials could move through the floor without starting a conversation."

The badge ticked hard against the wall.

Erebos wrote:

INITIAL MARK:

WORKPLACE SHORTHAND.

PERSON RECOGNITION UNPROVEN.

Zunoder spread one hand as if the room had saved him time.

Mara's mouth tightened. "Also, staff used it when they knew the full wording was cruel and wanted distance from it."

Rose said, "Stop."

Mara stopped.

JJ caught the second answer before the route could bury it.

SHORTHAND MAY HIDE SHAME.

The badge warmed under Ty's fingers.

He had not touched it yet. That bothered him.

"It wants me to pick it up," he said.

Yun-Jin stood beside him. "Then ask why."

Ty looked at the back of the badge. Two letters. Less than the ugly name. Less than a person. Enough to call down a hall without saying the full thing.

He took it from the chain.

The memory snapped into his palm.

A break-room sink. Paper towels. A staff locker with one hinge bent. Younger Ty stood outside the door because he had been told not to enter staff spaces. The warning slip was gone from his chest, but the torn corner had left adhesive on the gown.

Inside the break room, two workers argued over a transfer board. One wanted the full label used. The other refused to yell that across pediatrics. When the old legal name came up, the answer was worse, sharp enough that the room seemed to know both choices were bad.

"You got a better one?"

The paperclip scraped plastic. B first, then H.

The worker held up the badge. "B.H. answers."

The other worker laughed once. It sounded tired more than kind. "Everything answers if the floor scares it enough."

The first worker looked toward the door.

Younger Ty looked away too late.

The worker saw him. The badge disappeared into a pocket, quick enough to prove they knew exactly how it would look if someone official asked.

"You hear that?" the worker asked.

Younger Ty said nothing.

The worker stepped closer. The break-room door stayed open behind them. Someone inside scraped a chair back and stopped. Every person in that little room knew they had made a thing they would deny if asked.

That knowledge sat harder than the badge.

The worker rubbed a thumb across the scratched letters once, smearing skin oil into the cuts. "I said, you hear that?"

"B.H.?"

The letters landed different from Bone Half. Shorter. Safer for the worker. Easier to deny.

Younger Ty looked past the worker to the transfer board. Room 214 had a mark beside it. The same room. The same hidden bracelet.

"Yes," younger Ty said.

JJ wrote:

B.H. CALL RESPONSE.

FULL LABEL AVOIDED.

The room tried to place it under person recognition.

Zunoder lifted one finger. "No. Avoiding cruelty for the speaker's comfort is not recognition of the subject."

Ty hated how fair that was.

Omina accepted the objection. "Partial. Give him partial."

The route corrected itself.

FULL LABEL AVOIDED.

REASON DISPUTED.

In the memory, the worker shoved the badge into younger Ty's hand.

"Take this to the side hall. If Records asks who sent you, you never saw me."

Younger Ty looked at the scratched letters. "This is yours."

"Today it is yours."

"Does it have your name?"

The worker's face changed. For one blink, they looked afraid of a question they had not expected from storage.

"It has enough."

They took the badge back, then seemed to realize what taking it back admitted. The badge went into younger Ty's hand again.

"Hide it under your sleeve."

"Why?"

"Because if Records sees it, I have to explain why I made it."

Younger Ty tucked the badge under the torn gown cuff.

The worker looked relieved.

"If someone asks," the worker said, "you found it on the floor."

"I found it in your hand."

The worker stared at him. Younger Ty stared back.

Then the worker looked away first. "Then say nothing."

That was the part the badge kept.

The initials had been made to call him, but the silence after them had been made to protect the maker.

Zunoder marked the relief before JJ could.

SELF-PROTECTIVE RELIEF.

JJ added:

STILL TRANSFERRED CALL HANDLE.

The memory froze there. Enough moved through the hallway and found every place it could cut. Enough to call. Enough to hide. Enough to blame.

JJ set the badge between her two ledger lines, called for work and called for help. It sat in the middle and refused to choose.

Heissman rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Initials are dangerous because they can be mercy and cowardice in the same scratch."

JJ gave him the look she used when a sentence had too many hinges, so he shortened it. "People use letters when names cost too much."

Erebos wrote that version anyway.

LETTERS USED WHEN NAMES COST TOO MUCH.
