From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 785 - 785: Who Kept CallingThe hallway smelled like old tape.
Ty had no nose for it, but the memory gave him the smell anyway. Paper adhesive. Wet cardboard. Hospital soap rubbed thin by too many hands. The walls were narrow enough that a passing cart would have forced him sideways, and every clipboard hanging there looked like it had survived being slapped, dropped, and hung back up because nobody had time to replace it.
The first clipboard hung crooked on a nail that had missed the stud.
BONE HALF HELD DOOR.
The second held a torn sheet under a rusted clip.
BONE HALF MOVED CART.
The third note was smaller and older at the edges.
BONE HALF CAME BACK.
Above the hall, Heissman's four words remained where the Name Office had copied them.
CALLED.
ANSWERED.
RETURNED.
PROTECTED.
RETURNED had been underlined hard enough to split the ink.
JJ stepped around a puddle of old mop water and kept her ledger pressed against her ribs. "Nobody touches anything until I know what is trying to charge us."
From the shelter feed, Waddell asked if the floor counted. JJ told him that was almost helpful, and when he offered to do worse, Jade's answer came through flat enough to end it.
"Do not."
The second clipboard swung once, making the word cart heavier in the hallway. Ty put one hand under it before it hit the wall. The metal clip snapped down on his finger bone and held.
It was a stupid pressure. Small. Petty. The kind of pain a person could ignore until the room learned that ignoring worked.
Ty bent the clip open with his thumb. The metal scraped his bone before it gave up.
JJ saw the motion. "That counts as the hallway touching first."
"Then write it small."
"I am going to write it exactly as rude as it was."
The cart note had been written on the back of a meal request. Gray tray. Room 214. No onions. Move by side hall. Below the order, someone else had written:
ASK BONE HALF.
JJ leaned close but kept her hands away. "Work call."
Zunoder's reflection appeared in the wet floor at Ty's feet. "Repeated use. Thank you."
Omina walked past the reflection without lowering her eyes. "Use is part of the test. It is not the whole test."
"Generous."
"Accurate enemies waste less time."
The hallway liked that less than Zunoder did.
A cart rolled out from the wall. One wheel was wrapped in tape. One handle had a towel tied around it, old cleaner dried into the cloth until the padding looked more like a warning than help. The side rail carried brown marks from hands, food, and floor cleaner that had given up halfway.
JJ made two lines on the ledger, smaller than the ones she had used in the filing room.
CALLED FOR WORK.
CALLED FOR HELP.
The cart note slid to the first line.
Ty let it. "That one was work."
The hallway made the cart heavier.
Heissman watched the taped wheel. "Do not hurry past that. If you clean every call, Zunoder wins when the dirty one appears."
"I am not cleaning it."
The memory put younger hands on the handle. Thin. Half-banded. One knuckle split. A porter somewhere down the hall called without turning around.
"Bone Half, move that before rounds see it."
Younger Ty gripped the towel-wrapped handle. The cart resisted like it had a grudge, and present Ty felt the pull in the shoulder that had already taken the door.
JJ marked it under work.
The cart moved three feet. Then a patient file slid from under a tray and landed open on the floor with the name field facing the hall.
People walked past it. Shoes missed the page by inches.
Younger Ty stopped pushing.
The porter called back, "Keep moving."
The hallway tried to hurry the memory along with the cart. Ty planted one foot in front of the bad wheel, and the whole hall pulled against him.
JJ's ledger shook. "Why is it fighting the pause?"
Mara answered from the shelter before Rose could stop her. "Because exposed files were supposed to become someone else's problem fast."
Rose touched her wrist. Mara nodded once and stopped there.
Jade said, "Enough."
The memory kept pulling.
Ty looked down at the open file. He remembered the feeling now. The name on the paper was none of his business. That was what Mercy would have said, and the hallway would have agreed. The cart had to move because a porter had told him to move it.
Younger Ty bent anyway.
The cart handle dug into his hip while he used one hand to flip the folder shut. A shoe stopped beside his wrist. The person wearing it stayed standing.
"You lose something?" the person asked.
Younger Ty kept his hand on the file. "Someone else did."
The shoe moved away.
That was all the help the hallway gave him.
The porter turned. "What are you doing?"
Younger Ty kept his hand on the folder. "Name's showing."
"Move the cart."
"I am."
Younger Ty shoved the cart sideways instead of forward, blocking the file from the hallway before he pushed it toward the side door.
The line under JJ's hand split.
CALLED FOR WORK.
WORK CHANGED BY PROTECTION.
CALLED FOR HELP stayed empty.
Zunoder looked delighted. "He was not called for help. He invented the help to make the work prettier."
Ty wanted to argue, but the file stayed closed under the cart wheel, and that was the fact.
"He is right about the first half," Ty said.
JJ wrote it with visible annoyance.
Omina added a mark beside the second line. "Then the second half matters."
The cart memory rolled backward. The porter reached for the folder with a shoe, trying to drag it out from under the wheel without bending down.
Younger Ty moved the cart again.
This time the bad wheel rolled over his foot. The memory gave present Ty the pressure, less like pain than the body remembering how late it had protected the wrong part.
The porter muttered, "Half boy thinks he is privacy now."
The hallway caught the words.
HALF BOY.
JJ grabbed the line before the Name Office shortened it. "Person language partial."
Zunoder shook his head. "Mockery."
"Still language."
"Mockery is not recognition."
Ty looked at the cart, the closed file, the shoe, and the porter who wanted the hall clear without touching the mess. "Mockery can still know who it is hurting."
The hallway wrote nothing.
That was fine. Not every useful thing admitted it had been struck.
The third clipboard shook.
BONE HALF CAME BACK.
A thin paper slipped from behind it and landed against Ty's foot.
