The first response sound log opened a new door, and Ty wanted to step away from all of them.

He stayed.

The boot mark had become ugly with use, scuffed at the edges and dark where the drawer had tried to pull weight from it. Yun-Jin's shoe had crossed it twice now, leaving a pale scrape near the heel.

It looked less like a line and more like a place people had defended badly and honestly.

Ty trusted that more.

Yun-Jin noticed him looking at the scrape and shifted half a step away from it. She gave him room without making a ceremony of it. That helped more than another promise would have.

Omina read the sound log header.

"Name the scope before the room grabs sound."

The drawer offered four lanes at once, emergency response ward arrival, caller distress, subject response, and outcome capture.

JJ lifted both hands.

"Absolutely not all of that at once today."

Zunoder stepped toward the list.

"The sound log may prove response purpose clearly."

Omina kept the hilt between him and the lanes.

"It may prove what was done to get response."

"Then both meanings need limits before playback begins."

The drawer required a selection.

Heissman looked at the list like a man choosing which blade to hand a child.

"Start with arrival before anyone touches distress audio."

Zunoder chose the door with the largest teeth.

"Caller distress carries the response question most directly."

Of course it did. Caller distress carried fear as condition, the sound that opened doors.

Ty looked at the list and felt the pull of someone scared. If the log played that first, the room would try to turn his reaction into proof again.

Omina knew it.

"Arrival first keeps the sequence intact for everyone."

Zunoder smiled.

"Avoidance can dress itself as sequencing when useful."

"Sequencing can keep a witness from becoming bait."

The cost came from the shelter instead of the office.

Jade spoke through Waddell's mic.

"No caller audio until witness protections are set."

The drawer marked the cost. Delay would feed public claims of suppression.

Waddell gave the call stack a flat look.

"They already claim suppression every morning online before coffee."

Jade held the line.

"This gives the claim a cleaner handle to grab."

Caelin's office feed stacked with notifications. He read three and stopped.

"They are already asking for the sound by name."

JJ stared at him.

"How did they learn the term already, Caelin?"

"The visible captions showed sound log before we muted it."

Waddell closed his eyes.

Jade said the thing nobody wanted.

"Then the sound is a person now to them."

The drawer accepted public sound demand as active.

Zunoder used it softly.

"Public recognition can weigh response under emergency conditions."

Omina's answer came sharp.

"Public appetite only proves appetite, not recognition of truth."

"It can become recognition if the room ignores it."

"Then we starve the appetite before it learns a name."

The line surprised Ty because it came from Anika.

She stood at the kitchen sink with water running behind her and the towel back on her shoulder.

"You starve it by feeding people actual dinner first."

Then she looked at the serving window instead of the drawer.

"Give them bowls, not a sound to chant."

The drawer considered that a valid countermeasure. The shelter food route could weaken public sound demand, but the kitchen had to continue without the review feed until the arrival log closed.

Anika looked at Jade.

Jade looked back.

"That means you lose the review feed temporarily."

Anika swallowed. If she lost the feed, she lost the evidence as it happened. She lost the chance to catch supply and kitchen details. She returned to bowls while the room decided the next old sound.

It was a real cost.

For Anika, the feed had never been entertainment. It was the only way her kitchen knowledge could reach the room before someone official translated it into nothing. Losing it meant trusting Omina, Jade, and the others to catch what she would have caught herself.

Ty wanted to tell her no. He had no right to spend that word for her.

Anika took the towel from her shoulder and folded it once.

"Kitchen accepts feed loss until arrival log closes."

She looked toward the serving window.

"We keep serving, and no sound plays in the kitchen."

Anika's feed cut to black. Chosen, not broken. Ty looked at the blank square where she had been and kept his feet still.

The sound log narrowed to arrival audio while caller distress and subject response stayed sealed.

Omina nodded.

"Arrival only, with caller sound delayed for now."

The log drew a waveform instead of playing sound, then translated the lowest parts into text.

At 2332, cart wheel damage was audible. Two staff members entered. At 2333, an unidentified staff voice said route B.H.

Zunoder's eyes brightened.

"Route B.H. is the first spoken arrival label."

Omina wrote the whole line.

"Unidentified staff voice, not a confirmed speaker yet."

The next entry appeared before Zunoder could enlarge the first one. N. Vale was not present.

The room took that hard.

N. Vale had been removed. Her voice, her check request, her temporary band, her yellow sheet, all outside the ward when the route reached the place that could use it.

Zunoder took the clean wound.

"Then N. Vale cannot witness ward condition herself."

Omina accepted the cost.

"Correct, and that limit stays in the record."

Ty respected the line because it hurt honestly. N. Vale's witness lane ended at lower hold, supply, and pre-arrival transfer. Ward condition belonged to other evidence.

The log continued. The second support staff member was present. D. Creel was absent from the audio. At 2334, the route was confirmed by a workstation tone.

Heissman looked sick again, and JJ caught it.

"What does terminal tone mean in a ward?"

"A workstation confirmation sound, meaning a machine beep."

JJ pointed her pencil at the drawer.

"Then call it a machine beep where humans can hear."

The drawer preferred the formal wording. Omina wrote the plain version beside it. The ward confirmation came from a machine signal instead of a human voice.

Zunoder objected.

"The machine signal executed prior human authorization there."

Omina kept writing.

"Prior authorization stayed separated from ward presence again."

Ty looked at the waveform. No caller yet. No response yet. Only arrival, wheels, staff, and a machine confirming that the route could use what had arrived.

The next line appeared slowly.

At 2334, a staff member asked whether the sound should be used.

JJ went still. Yun-Jin's eyes cut toward Ty.

Omina lifted the hilt.

"Stop arrival before sound selection opens the caller."

Zunoder moved at once.

"That question still belongs to the arrival record itself."

"It reaches caller selection before protections exist here."

The drawer liked his argument. Ty felt it shift.

If the next line opened, it would drag the caller into the room before the limits were ready. The boot mark darkened under his feet.

The drawer offered him access selection.

Omina turned on it.

"The subject should not have to spend the caller."

The drawer offered him access again.

Ty understood the trap. If he chose to stop it, the route could call it fear of response proof. If he opened it, the caller sound entered and the room would test him against it.

Zunoder waited. Yun-Jin gave him no order, and that was her mercy.

The room had asked Ty to choose before, but this one felt meaner. A caller's distress could make the old body useful to the route. It could also be a real person breaking on an old recording. Opening it for advantage would turn protection into another kind of taking.

Ty looked at the blank kitchen feed, at Rose behind her tape, at Mara's hands flat on the table, at Caelin's phone queue, at JJ's marked wrist, at Omina's hilt held steady.

Then he looked at the log.

"Arrival log stops before sound selection can open."

The drawer entered his limit with the ugly half attached, possible avoidance of response proof, and Zunoder accepted that half.

Omina added the other half, possible protection of caller and staff limits.

Both lines entered. The arrival log closed.

Anika's feed returned, but she was not looking at the camera. She was handing a bowl through the serving window. The child from earlier took it with both hands. No one said sound.

That held long enough to matter.

The drawer opened the next sealed tab anyway. Caller distress audio waited under it with playback limits still required.

Under that sat the last line.

Caller identity was partially available.
