From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 856 - 856: The Mark On The Shelter MapThe mark on Jade's tablet moved from the edge of the shelter map to the laundry corridor.
It slid across two drawn walls, stopped over a service closet, and pressed itself into the screen until the glass made a tiny sound under her thumb.
Jade took her hand away.
The mark stayed.
Waddell stepped close enough to block the nearest camera from seeing the tablet.
"Tell me which hallway needs bodies away from it before somebody official asks for a clean report."
Jade tilted the screen toward him. Her damaged eye kept trying to count the mark as a door. She made herself read the hall labels first. Laundry corridor. Service closet. Old intake vent behind the stacked cots. A place no one used unless storage had failed somewhere else.
"Move the children out of the west room and put Tyree between the laundry doors and the stairs," she said.
Waddell lifted his radio.
"West room clears quiet, and Tyree takes laundry with two people who can keep their hands off weird marks."
The radio answered with static, then Tyree's voice came through rough and awake.
"Tell Jade I can guard a laundry door without adopting any wall stains."
Tyree's answer landed close enough to a joke for Jade to let it pass.
Kieran the Hunter had already crossed the cafeteria. Mason slept on the folded blanket near Mara's chair, one hand on the dinosaur's tail, with Rose sitting between him and the open room. Kieran lowered herself beside the boy and placed her back to the door.
Kieran kept the question to herself.
Jade had no answer worth handing a child.
Caelin's face appeared on the side feed with his aide behind him. The young woman had a phone in one hand, a pen in the other, and the look of someone learning that public service meant writing down nightmares in neutral language.
"Do you need the city map layer overlaid?" Caelin asked.
"Keep this off live overlays, leave the mark uncopied, and do not send it to an analyst who wants to prove they are useful."
His aide lowered the phone before Caelin answered, sparing him from the wrong instinct.
"We can draw the shelter outline by hand and leave the mark off it," the aide said. "That gives us evacuation routes without feeding the thing another clean map."
Jade looked at her through the tablet.
"Use paper and give every hallway a wrong nickname until this is contained."
The aide nodded and moved.
Across the route feed, Ty's hand scraped against the table.
Jade saw the movement and hated that she knew him well enough to read it through a bad angle and a broken connection. He wanted to come. He held himself so hard the table creaked under his fingers.
Yun-Jin caught his wrist before the room could price the movement.
"You are useful where the verdict still holds, and Jade has not asked you to buy a road with your body."
Ty looked at her hand on his wrist.
"The mark is on her map."
"The mark wants you to say that like it is permission."
JJ moved closer to the route table, both broken pencil pieces shoved behind one ear because she had run out of patience for holding them.
"If you jump through the first ugly line that points at Jade, Erebos gets to learn which leash still works."
Ty's fingers flexed once under Yun-Jin's grip.
On the shelter feed, Jade leaned over the tablet until the bad eye stopped pulling against the mark and found Ty's face instead.
"Stay where the verdict is sealed until I give you a door that is not made out of my pain."
The route room took the sentence before anyone wrote it.
Ty hated hearing the room take it, but he listened.
Omina set both hands on the sealed verdict clamp.
"Open Room Four notice scope with pursuit barred, personal receipt barred, and shelter map conversion barred from witness consent."
The paper under the clamp trembled. The black circle at the corner stayed flat, but the twelve cuts around it answered one at a time.
ROOM FOUR NOTICE SEEKS RECEIPT POINT.
JJ leaned over the table.
"Receipt point is the part where a machine tries to make Jade into the mailbox."
Heissman's face stayed flat.
"Yes, and if the route accepts her eye as the receipt, every later notice can argue she opened the channel."
Ty tried to pull his wrist free.
Yun-Jin tightened her grip with enough force to make the table legs complain.
"Do your angry breathing where I can still stop you."
He stopped pulling.
Jade heard enough through the feed to understand the shape of the trap. Her eye hurt worse when she looked away from the tablet. The pain told her the mark preferred her attention, so she used that much and gave it nothing else.
She turned the tablet face down.
The cafeteria lights reflected off the blank case. For three breaths, the pull in her eye lessened.
Then the map appeared on the back of the tablet.
The screen stayed dark while scratched lines pressed through the plastic case from the inside, marking the laundry corridor by touch.
Rose stood so fast her chair scraped across the floor.
Mara reached for Mason first, not the tablet.
Jade loved her for that and kept the feeling out of her voice.
"Kieran, move him behind the serving counter with Rose. Waddell, nobody touches this tablet unless I drop."
Waddell stepped between Jade and the closest volunteer.
"Anybody trying to be helpful with the cursed tablet can help from ten feet away."
Caelin's aide came back into frame holding paper. Her hand shook, but the shelter outline was clear and ugly in the useful way. Hallways had names like Mop One, Bad Freezer, Chair Grave, and No Kids.
"The hand map is ready, and I left the laundry hall blank," she said.
Jade almost smiled.
"That paper might be the smartest thing anyone has done in the last five minutes."
The black circle in Ty's room pushed another line into the paper.
PERSONAL RECEIPT AVAILABLE THROUGH DAMAGED EYE.
Omina crossed it out hard enough to tear the top layer of the sheet.
"Denied, since the eye is an injury and not an office receiving desk."
Heissman added his hand beside hers.
"Receipt may attach to building map only if building authority accepts notice cost and no person becomes the route."
On the shelter feed, Waddell looked at Jade.
"Building authority is a stupid phrase that means you, me, or Caelin."
Caelin answered before Jade could.
"My office can take receipt for public infrastructure."
Jade kept the tablet facedown and stared at the scratched plastic.
"Your office is not standing next to the children."
Waddell lifted his radio again.
"The shelter takes the building notice. My name goes first if this turns into a bill."
Jade looked at him.
"You do not get to be noble before breakfast."
"Breakfast was six hours ago, and I am calling this facility control."
The dodge around facility control sounded like him. He had just offered to become paperwork because the alternative was Jade's eye or a child's hallway.
Omina wrote the acceptance before the room could twist it into heroics.
"Shelter facility control accepts room-level notice cost with personal receipt, eye route, child route, and witness consent creation barred."
The paper fought hardest over eye route.
Jade felt the pressure in her socket tighten until her vision split at the edge. She kept her palm flat on the table and counted the chipped spots in the laminate because chipped spots belonged to the world she could still command.
Three chips sat near her wrist. Four more marked the table edge.
The pressure broke.
The scratched map on the tablet case lost the lines for the sleeping area, the cafeteria, and the west room. Only the laundry corridor remained, carved shallow and ugly beside the service closet.
ROOM-LEVEL NOTICE ACCEPTED.
RECEIPT LIMITED TO FACILITY CONTROL.
NO PERSONAL EYE RECEIPT.
JJ breathed out through her teeth.
"I want to throw that win at someone."
"Later, preferably when the someone has a face," Yun-Jin said.
Ty looked at Jade through the feed.
She looked back while she still could.
"You heard the room, and I am not the mailbox," she said.
His answer took a second because he had to drag it past everything in him that wanted to argue with the distance.
"Then I stay where the sealed verdict needs me."
Jade nodded once and turned away first because command required cruelty in small amounts.
Waddell handed the paper map to Kieran. She scanned the blank laundry space, then glanced toward the sleeping child behind the counter.
"The old intake vent has a crawl gap," Kieran said. "A small fighter could enter there without using the door."
Waddell's jaw shifted.
"Tyree, did you hear that part about the crawl gap?"
The radio crackled.
"I heard it, and I hate that I heard it."
Jade's bad eye pulsed once, sharp enough to tilt the room.
The mark on the tablet case deepened over the service closet.
Somewhere far from the shelter, in a prison room built outside trackable time, a fourth desk received the failed Name route and opened its human-world wall.
Three pink hairs sat sealed under glass beside a cracked helm. A black knuckle bone lay in a tray with twelve little cuts around it. Under the wall map, a narrow field case clicked open.
Inside it rested a flute wrapped in gray cloth.
The label beneath the case changed while the room waited for a hand.
EARTH DOOR ACTIVE.
FIELD ASSET READY.
